<div class="IPBDescription">Silence upgrade change</div> One of the most often requested changes to silence has been implemented for NS v1.1. When an alien has the silence ability, his <b>attacks and footsteps</b> are silenced too!

<b>Level 1:</b> Sounds are played at 50% volume
<b>Level 2:</b> Sounds are played at 25% volume
<b>Level 3:</b> Sounds aren't played. Total silence.

It's just plain eerie to rove around the level as a silenced skulk, not making a sound and gliding in and out of shadows, snacking on targets that are facing the other way...this works well for leap too ("Did you just see something?").

Note that if a skulk bites something, the "hit" sound is still played. This means a commander will hear munching on his resource towers when there's no one present, but he won't hear the chomping.

All of this is subject to change after playtesting of course.

    Question : Will that include the whack sounds some species make just as they move about? Especially the Lerk, obviously (as it's are WELL noticeable, and it seems to make more), but also the Onos & Gorge.

    I'm quite interested as to how this will turn out. Quick question: does "hitting" a wall with the quote-unquote "bitegun" attack or similar make the sound as if a player/structure was hit? (IE: if you think of the bite as a close range attack like a knife, will hitting a wall with it make the noise?)

    As always, teaser info is much appreciated...may I make the guess that this week will be much like the "press week" in October '02 that got me and others so hyped up for the initial release of 1.0? Please don't feel rushed to release it.     This sounds excellent, but please, let the next teaser be about the upgrade system in general. All chambers at first hive with level 1 upgrades or the current one? Or something completely new? Would be so much easier to consider changes to individual upgrades.

    But, good work. This has always been one of my fav silence suggestions.

    I think the number 1 most annoying thing as a gorge is when you're trying to build a nice neat, symetrical WoL and you get friggin skulks jumping in front of you that need healing. They could stand to the side and poke their head in slightly, that works. Or just wait for you to drop def chambers/turn around

    Rest assured, the dev team has already taken this into account. 'Tis better to ask questions about how the teaser ideas will work than discuss their balance effects before they've even finished internal playtesting.

    I dunno about having the exact same full silence for every alien, since the skulk, and perhaps the lerk, by there very natures, are the sorts of aliens to be in the shadows hiding, but, either way,,...

    Keep the info coming. This is great, and that's the first smart upgrade to aliens I"ve seen or head of in a while. Very scary. Great job. Hope it stays in after play testing.

    Please tell me that Silence will take you off motion tracking as well? n_n Will keep Silence as a viable early *and* mid-game tool... what really needs to happen (and was forgot by a lot of other modmakers) is that abilities, for the most part, need to be brought up to balance instead of cut down. Add the silence/no-MT thing to the MCs.. SCs get hitscan no-damage parasite, and Cloaking goes back to 100% (can't stress how easy it is to pick out at the current 90%, excepting when they're hiding somewhere I would have missed them _anyway_). Fiddle around the other SC upgrades (AHS is probably one of the more underused... and sadly, rightly so), and it would seem that all three would have the stuff needed to allow for any order of build.

    Talesin has a point though. There should be some sort of technique to get around Motion Tracking. You can complain all you want about someone brining it up, when the whole point a skulk is to hide and sneak around...wel they're 70 percent useless after MT.

    To think I'm supporting taking them off MT "somehow", after I just got snuck up on in my game 4 times, when they were MAKING noise. THe idea of how powerful that would be got me wondering if anyone would even use anything else after that. Adreniline and Celerity sort of pale to not making an ounce of sound at all. The good news of course is some people would finally get into debates over which is truly more useful, Defense or Motion first. If cloak is changed back to 100 percent, it could get a turly balanced set of towers that people have to debat their team strategy over to use, instead of just D, M, and..possibly S.

    Ah well.

    I'm sorry, Gamerlife, but there are no real counters to MT. Whatever aliens do, they are tracked. Unless you stand still, but everyone knows that you can't win by sitting still...

    Silence should be cool now. Usually I plump for one of the other two, but the idea of making no sound is cool.

    I could not agree more. I have always found silence worthless becuase the majority of marine teams out there rush, or get MT very quickly - so why get silence?
