how much?
can anyone give me a rough estimate of how much monthly traffic an NS server generates? (obviously it depends on number of players)
I'm thinking of renting a root server but want to make sure I don't get stung with extra traffic charges.
Also, is a 2GHz Celeron up the job with NS (I heard that ns for linux isn't yet fully optimised, is that correct?) - if not, is the cpu load likely to get better in 1.1?
You may have guessed that I'm going for the budget option here

Column on the left was a 30 person server, column on the right is 2, 18's. Its an 8 day glance
I will update it later today (its early Jan in the page)
Thats ONE server, I have 3
Thanks for the info guys, keep it coming (looks like I'll need to spend some more money on hosting though)

22 slots, 2 reserved x 3 servers = 66 clients. For a more descriptive number, I calculated it once; and can be found in thread below.

Im wierd. *explanation follows*
I have 2 boxes that I run NS on. The 2, 18 person servers are on one box, and the 30 person (now 24) is on another.
Both boxes are identical (IBM X330):
dual 1.266ghz
1 GB of ram (one might have 1.5)
18 GB SCSI hard drives
W2K Server (I know I know... just cant find the time to learn linux)
The 30 (now 24) person server is bound to a single processor on the box its on. The 2, 18 person servers on other box are not bound to a single processor. I did at one time and the CPU pegged at 100% and stayed there. I *think* the problem was too many new dll's and not necesarily binding the process. I keep telling myself that I will do it again and test but just haven't had the time.
I wanted to post new utilization reports but the bios on my laptop crapped out today... Im stuck on a little mini laptop until I get mine back.
One nice thing, Im getting Denika (an automatic bundled mrtg scripter) tomorow. Once I have it, I will set it up to monitor both bandwidth and cpu utilization. I can start laying out some reports on that when I can.
Btw
I run w2k, work with nt and 2k make a damn good living too. Don't knock w2k. People have their opinions about os and the like, but truth is it works well for a long time between reboots. So does linux (not as well yet as ns needs some linux tweaking) but in the long run we all want stable servers and low overhead. Both oses provide that very well.

ps please don't turn this into a ford vs chevy thread now as I really did not have that intent.
