use the popup menu?

its pretty hard for the comm to just FIND you. :-/ they got to scroll and crap. I personally wouldn't even bother dropping med if it takes me a significant effort to find you.

I think the comm presses the jump key to center on the last received transmission. Although if there's a lot going on at once for the comm to handle, it's not expected that the comm will acknowledge.

I assumed since the comms were asking where he was he hadn't used the popup menu...

Then stick with a team of Marines so you're easier to find (a good idea, anyway). And/or recommend that the comm use the 'jump' button to jump to you. I'd actually recommend this highly over playing on a re-modded server. Being able to grab medpacks at any time is an unbalancing factor, and will leave you high and dry any time you aren't playing on one.

and make sure you actually need a medpack. 2 res for a medpack is more than it seems. That cash could go toward and upgrade instead which could decrease the chance that you need a medpack in the future. As comm I only give out medpacks to marines that might lose equipment, marines in key locations, marines taking out gorges, etc. If they are in base i just tell them to kill themselves or go on a suicide mission. Why waste res? You spawn back in with full health AND full armor for free.

wouldent it be easier to find me when im by my self on the map somewhere instead of in a bunch of other marines ? ....

oh and well when im comm i give out medpacks only when there health is under 30
  • EclipseEclipse Join Date: 2003-01-18 Member: 12444Members
Well, it depends on the situation, cuz it actually costs 1 res to respawn. I typically drop medpacks for all my marines and if not much is going on I scroll across the minimap seeing whos doing what, drop health and a pack of ammo and move on. Sometimes that shot of 50 could get a marine past a wall and able to build a phase...or sometimes he just might die right afterwards.

I find the jump key to be unreliable unless it says "Sentry Firing" or "Our base is under attack" those are the only things that actually work, I rarley hear the Solider needs health or ammo call

It costs to spawn? Since when? If thats true I must have missed it, the problem with the comm finding you is partly because of what Vicious says. As comm you hit the space bar and end up staring at something else entirely. It's partly because there may be two marines asking for health the comm may only hear one request and drop some health for the first one he see's. It's often because he;s just too damn busy with mision critical stuff so he's ignoring you and just hoping you survive until he has more time. It's also partly because if you hit jump you can end up on what is, or looks like an empty piece of corridor. As comm you dont want to drop a medpack for the hell of it so you need to find the marine that asked for it and checkthat he really need the medpack. If your standing in a dark are it can be difficult for him to see you.

Basically stick with the group if you want comm support. If you decide to rambo, make sure you really can survive without the comms help. If the comm knows your effective and you follow orders he will look after you 90% of the time.

The best solution I can think of is to either find yourself a relatively safe place and type (an outpost, or at base) or to get voicecom working and use that. I usually request medpacks over voicecom, along the lines of "medpack at triad gen please".

He may also not want to give you health. When I comm i wont spend the 2 res unless you have jetpack or HA or are preforming an important task for me. Im guessing this is not the case for you cause if someone is under those 2 criteria i am usually already following them.

When unequiped grunts request health from me i usually answer by saying "type kill in console, you will get full life". It may seam mean to you but if i give out 10 health packs we have just sacraficed our first weapon upgrade. 1 more and we have given away a whole resource tower. 2 RCs doesnt sound like much but they add up quickly.

To ensure that my comm can find me even if the jump key doesn't work is knowing exactly where you are yourself. I can just look around, and immediately tell me comm over voice, "I'm in the room between messhall and noname hive, the one with a res in it. I'm low on health help!"

In tournament mode is costs 1 RP to spawn.

The comm is incredibly busy. And I hate when people say "I need health". I have no idea where you are and currently, there is no way to find out where you are other then looking at every green dot on the minimap, putting my mouse over every person, and checking the name.

In other words, if you REALLY need a medpack (like you're at a newly claimed hive, gaurding it, at an unstable seige location, etc.) then bind something to impulse 80, AND say "need medpack to place blank"

Currently the comm interface is not well designed for these requests, but it will be.

Well, it has to do with getting health, so it's relevant.

What is this meta-mod? First of all, what's a META MOD. Second, is that the strange thing I experinced once where I asked for a med kit and got it instantly? That was super cool. I mean it still costs the same. Granted, I didn't abuse it, and some did..you know the ones, asking for med kits after getting hit with ONE lerk needle. But I don't think it's unbalancing since it still costs the same and all, it just frees up the com to do other things and ensures our little thread starter here gets his health when he needs it.

You /are/ just asking for it when you need it of course.

edit. Ah, and Ditto to killswitch...uhm..guy that started this thread. Keep your head on for a while, and I think with V 1.1 you'll be amazed how often you get med kits. If...you need'em...and the com likes you...and all.

Yeah, use the pop-up. Jumping to target makes this much easier, but hey, ignore this, as it's all being revised for 1.1 comm mode anyway.

That reminds me of the single most useless bit of advice any comm has ever given any marine.

    "Don't Die"

    I love that one.

Either they are a noobie commander and don't watch over their soldiers, or the commander was excellent and he didn't drop you a health pack because your life was not worth the cost of an additional health pack.

Any good comm can respond in a split second to any request if it is a sound request. There is a no solution to lagging commander. Eject him.. uh, or just play out the game until you're slaughtered.

I would have to agree with using the phasegate_eg mod, I don't play marine much, but when I do I want that mod on, becuase it makes it instantanios for your health and ammo requests, but it does cost a lot to keep maintained

It's pretty simple. Unless the mission you're on is critical, or you have expensive equipment, you'll never receive a health pack from me.

You'll be better going through my phasegate, which you'll reach sooner by dying & respawning anyway. Go make yourself useful & shoot the hive. Just because it means all the aliens will divert to come deal with you, just cos a hive is getting shot.

Early only, I don't care about marine's HP.. but when they start getting upgrades.. or they're securing a hive or resource node. That's the only time I drop medpacks, I try to keep a quick swiftness on upgrade's ahead of capping resource node's. Then, once I get about 200 resources I start dropping upgrades for all.
