And if anyone can help me out, I'm having trouble getting the video to play right. I've tried several different players but none work. Anyone else having this problem?

To play the movie you need the newest DivX Codec 5.03 . It doesnt even work with 5.02 so you have to update your version .

DivX - Homepage

Download the free Version and after installing it , you can run the movie either with the DivX player 2.0 or with the usual Windows media Player.

It's a nice movie with very good special effects like in The Matrix. The only problem is , that its too short . 5 minutes with 1 minute credits. But I'm really looking forward for Dark Horizons Part II

I thought it was pretty cool, musta been hard to do.

edit: Don't play it in RealPlayer, either. Use the DivX player.

I haven't watched it yet since we had a NSA match last night right after i downloaded it, GG {MA}, but I heard it is rather uneventful. I'll probly edit this when I go home and watch it once this boring **** class is done.

I thought it was great.

I also think a lot of people where expecting it to be something its not, thats why they were disapointed by it.

I started watching the movie with no preset expectations, so I was plesently supprised when I saw the camera angles and such, the different cinema effects and the ... mediocre voice acting ..

I agree, it was ok, I found sometimes I kept turning up my sound trying to hear what some of the guys said though. The camera work was very nicely done, but, I think a little more plot would of helped. Get us into the mood and caring for the chraracters with some background. Cause right now, when they died, it was more like "'ooo, nice kill!" not "awww, they killed so-and-so!"

yeah i agree the how the camera angles switches and those effects rock. what the others said about depth...then, it will be a killer. i'll give it a 7/10 overall.

looks like chaos film is also doing a NS 1.1 trailer/preview thingy or something. Regis did u watch the official NS trailer? what did u think of that?

I'd have to agree with the 7/10. I hadn't heard from this project for a long time, so I don't remember what they were supposed to show. Some of the scenes show great "squad alignment" and others are a bit sloppy. Overall it was pretty fun, though. Bad voice acting (I didn't find it mediocre, they could have worked a little harder on it) covered by a great score.

i know people will hate me for mentioning CS, but did you watch Militia II the movie? If that didn't get to your expectations, I hope you lower them a heck of a lot...

And what's wrong with CS? When played correctly (if ever done so) CS is probably the second best mod there is out there! (yes NS is still the best one )

Edit: ah yes now I remember some things that were annoying me... First of all, they go weld one of those fireblast doors (not covering the vents it should be reminded) before being retransported to their start.
second thing is, the door has been closed by a marine it seems (no parasite hit sound)
thirdly, one of the dead bodies is moving I have already said too much, but I have a feeling this has been rushed a bit... Let's see the quality of Militia II! Give the best mod the best movies!!!!!!!!!! I sure hope this is to be continued, because it is a bit decieving... it was, as people mentioned, short... marines weld, walk, get killed to resume. the trailer was better I wantz a 30 minute movie with real plot

I did see both Militia movies. I think they are the best ingames movies out there. Music was excellent, screenplay was good too, except for the voice acting again (accents were overdone.) Plus that the actual dialog was a bit... cheesy (and they attempted to make it sentimental .)

NS is a different matter. If you think about it, a plot is not as important in an NS movie, instead the horror-aspect comes to mind, and this movie has it

no I don't agree. (ok last post Im going to sleep after this one)

>Natural Selection has the teamplay required to actually need people caring about something other than welding a door open and shooting skulks.
>Well, I think that it should be a horrorish scary movie, but that doesn't mean it to be a shoot-the-skulk omg-skulks-everywhere movie. For example as a rough plot. Life is all good on nancy. (youd see a pilot in the marine start thing) marines control every single res node, and you can do custom maps (like it was done in militia) to have the hive rooms non bacteria-invaded. I suppose you'd see fighters/whatever the nancy is supposed to be coming in and out and everything is cool. one day, there's a big THUD, and so you ask to check airlock exchange. surprise, skulky skulky... everyone dies. an emergency blah blah blah is sent, and I don't know the rest. Maybe, you'd send a first squad, and they'd be horribly massacred, or maybe the aliens havve something the marines horribly need.you could think they keep some special being they are keeping for some reason, try having him webbed like a ham on a wall or something, a special skin... , or maybe there are two marine forces on both sides of the hives and they try to get in touch, and in the end it's like.. hey john.. you ok? yeah I'm fine... Let's leave this hellhole... They leave the ship... And then you hear a chuckle aboard the ship. Schplooof, you have a screen fading to black, credits, hell of a nice movie..

As to the Militia: can you imagine if it wasn't cheesy? You'd have the sniper kill the guy, the chopper actually doing something helpful other than kill someone then crash into the arctic dude and such.. Would it be fun if you'd see a swat team storming the building and killing the two terrorists in there? (I believe there are only two in the first lmilitia/begin. of the second)
NO! It's all in the cheese people! That's why we like pizza!

I have to agree that Militia I and II have set the standard pretty high for the machinima genre. I'll simply make a reasonable assumption that "Dark Horizons II" will be to "Dark Horizons I" what "Militia II" was to "Militia I".

If I were this team, I'd probably release a short film (*cough* like this *cough*) just to see the community reaction, what things they like/don't like, how many mirrors are needed, etc. before using what I learned on future, more demanding projects. And looking at the readme file included in the .zip, I'd imagine they'll need to work quite a bit to make their next few movies as good as they can be.

To the team: thanks for the movie; don't feel as if we're rushing you to make the next one, but know that we're getting our hopes up for seeing more from you.

I saw someone asked if I've seen the NS Trailer. Yes I have, and loved it. Been talking to MonsE about the technical aspects for a while now, and I'm really having second doubts on being able to top that. Since the 1.1 trailer is going to have to show the whole "what's NEW and what do maps look like" instead of the "what is NS all about" (like the first trailer), it's going to be much more of a challenge. I think I have a basic outline for the trailer, just gotta pitch it to flayra

I think Silverfox was right on the money about people expecting something totally different than what was presented. This is the first (besides the trailer) NS movie, we really didn't know how the reaction would be, or actually how difficult the NS mod is to film a plot-driven movie on. The main purpose for the movie was experimentation. We're trying to see if the NS community likes to see the more dramatic side of movies, or if they're the cs-equivalent of shoot 'em up action stuff. From what I can tell from the comments, it's about half and half, could go either way. Another thing that I've noticed from the NS community comments (which is very good) is the attention to the detail of the movie.

I've seen some are saying that it seems rushed, etc. To be honest, I totally agree. It was rushed to a certain extent. The original was slated to be around 7 or 8 minutes (which the opening sequence of credits works fine with) however, doesn't seem to work too well with the 5 minute version. I wish I could make a 30 minute movie, but filesize would be too large. You can see just in this thread alone some people are reluctant on downloading even the 50 meg Low Quality version because of 56k or download limitations.

There are issues about the dead marine model moving. Yes, that is sadly a production mistake, but one I could not avoid. From the 3 hours we spent filming this scene (which you tend to get very frustrated), from what I could tell, NS has random death animations. And most of those animations don't even lay flat on the floor (they're kind of floating oddly in the air, which obviously cannot work). That was the best (and only) shot where BOTH of the marine's death animations were perfect. I could have cut the movement from the marine out, but I dont think it would have been as impactful cut short.

I saw mention of the Militia movies, which of course I love. I've been talking to The_Family_god for a while now, alittle bit before Militia II was released, and he msg'd me what he thought about Dark Horizons:
<The_Family_God> congrats on releasing the first (good) NS video. though I personally like your Festung movie better, the visual quality is quite good on this one and its a welcome change to the random crap

So maybe it's not as bad as I think it is. Maybe I'm just kind of sick of it cause I've been editing it for a month or so. But to be honest, I'm really glad to be able to produce this. I'm looking at the script for DH:II, making notes of what the community thinks, etc. SO, hopefully I can change this 50% liking to more of a 75% liking

I must say I was dissapointed. Intro was cool. Camera work was great. Music was great. The movie itself was really short. The one thing I thought was really cool was when the skulks moved in on the last marine. Maybe a little longer with a better story. I'd really like to see a fire fight of some sort between lerks, fades and marines.
