Ya, the scream at the end is horrible. I had tons of people do that scream, over a span of like 3 days, and the worst thing about it, that was the best...

A point I missed out, probably most importantly, was a comment about the lack of story. The first one was supposed to be short, and inconclusive. When part 2 comes out, I'm pretty sure the audience will see why. I didn't want the audience to root for any particular side, until the 2nd film. I didn't want anyone to feel sorry for the marines that die, which I saw a couple of comments talking about how they weren't moved by it, so I at least accomplished that heh

I thought it was just a little boring. Move out, weld door, weld door, die, die some more, the end. Thought there could have been more action and a little less predictable. Although it's going to be had to surprise people when they know the alien noises and what to expect when they here skulk feet tapping.

    Hello guys,

I'm the writer of this film, and I couldn't agree with you more. As regis has already said, this movie was an experiment. All of us involved with the filming and production gained some great experience working with the Natural Selection mod and its server commands, this is why we planned for DH to be a 2-part series.

I did the majority of the voice acting, and I even think that it was pretty low-quality (I blame myself <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> ). However, I'm extremely pleased with the finished product as I hope the rest of you are.

I see many of you saying "It was too short." As-is, the film already weighs in at a hefty 75mb (high qual.) and 50 mb (low qual.). The issue of HD space consumed, and your interent connection, severly limits the length a movie can be, as I'm sure many of you know.

In any case, we are currently in production of DHII. This movie is going to be much longer, have many more battle scenes, and an overall better look and feel than the original. Think as DHI as a prologe as to what is to come.

Again, I am very happy that DH has finally made it to this stage. Regis and everyone else involved with the movie has done a great job, and I hope you guys enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Keep your eyes out for DHII.

    -Psycho

Hi guys. I'm Mr. Commander in the movie, and (although it isnt mentioned) helped write the script with TDWPsycho. Considering this IS the first Natural Selection movie to my knowledge, it was an experiment. Getting the camera to work right was a challenge in itself. And as for the acting, well...I'd hate to admit but for most of us it was our first time. Hearing all of what you've said, it makes me feel very proud that I could help produce something that you would all like, and I acknowledge all of the criticism, positive and negative, to help us all work better to make a better 2nd movie.

I just wanted to make a list of a few things that you guys (being new to the mod) understanably mistook as dramatic scenes. When the tapping of little feeties is heard I wanted to spin my mouse around to look for and fire upon a dog (skulk). So that whole thing with the attempted suspense there was killed because we are all SOOO used to it, and use it in game as an advantage. The thing you did not use however was the sound of the fall of a Skulk from a high place...that just sounds totaly bad-****. Also, dont use so many doggies because I think I can speak for all of us when I say that it was just a little unrealistic, even for this game. You have to understand 4 organized skulks can take out a HA and welder guy quite easily in a room like that.

Now I was just making a few comments that were in NO WAY a flame, I personaly loved the movie (short though) and understand how huge an undertaking it can be to do something like that. Therefore I encourage you and look forward to your next movie.

PS: If you could get some austrian guy with an Arnold Shwartzenager accent to be the commander that would be totaly sweet.

id be the heavy guy, not sure what hes called cuz im not a NS player (except for a few times) but i loved making the movie with the guys. im sure we could get a 10 min movie of just outtakes (mostly from me and my bad aim...inside joke, im sire tiger or psy will say something). Anyways, im glad most of you liked it, and hope you 56kers do dl the movie, it is worth the time.

I thought it was very well put together. Yeah, it could use more plot and stronger characters, yeah, that scream at the end was pretty bad, but in the final analysis y'all did a great job with this. I'm looking forward to your future creations. (:

By the way - have you ever considered breaking a large download into two or more pieces? You could either physically break the movie into two halves, or simply zip it into a multiple-file archive. The total size doesn't go down, no, but two 50MB files are much more downloadable than a single 100MB file in my opinion.

Again, great work, and welcome to the forums. (:

XeR0, you should play NS for a bit, or get an expierienced NS player to join your server when you do the scenes. That way you can have another pain in the tuccus telling you you are doing it all wrong <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> . Seriosly though, if you were to open this up to the forum goers then you'd get a great deal of help. There is an odd amount of pride in this mod... very curious.

So if you need extras or something just plop a post down here and you'll get some instantanious feedback and encouragment.

    double edit: 1st - sp 2nd - bit about getting help n stuff<span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'> </span>

I totally agree, there was little suspense because we are all so incredibly used to playing this stuff. Whats scary is when a skulk just pops out of nowhere and lands RIGHT in front of your face and starts biting, thats scary. Whats also scary is the cry of an Onos from some place, and you know its coming, and your back is turned, and all of a sudden the onos charges at you, shouting. Things like this are scary, footsteps dont tend to scare the people because we see it 50 times a game

Hi, im Pierog, The Founder of The Chaos Films group.

Even thou Regis pretty much headed this film, and as mentioned before, this experiment, i can answer some questions and suggestions about the general process about how we work.

For one, the parts are open to the public. We hold casting calls which are advertised on our website at <a href='http://chaosfilms.dodhq.net' target='_blank'>http://chaosfilms.dodhq.net</a> . Since this is our first film in the Natural Selection Enviroment, there is no doubt that most of oyu have never heard of us, hence making most of the actors fans of our Day of Defeat Films.

You can ask questions on how we work, and about the the Game film making process in general in our IRC channel at #coalitionofchaos

regis will continue his work in Natural selection as well as day of defeat, but as this film was supposed to do, it opened us to a new community. Currently we have a slew of Day of Defeat directors but we patiently wait for the next version release of dod since it supposedly changes the enviroment drstically. If you think you have the skills to be a director, just talk to me in our irc channel (again #coalitionofchaos on gamesnet). You'll have to climb the ladder into a director spot, as most of our directors were either previous actors or foudning memebers.

Again, any questions or if you want to personally give some comments, just stop by our irc channel.

And I don't know why, but I was always expecting the trap door under the marine to open, and him falling face to face with a fade ....!

enjoyed the movie... but man oh man was that voice acting terrible. i wouldve preferred captions as opposed to some nerdy kids trying to sound like big tough marines, not working.

I know this sounds greedy, but could you lop off the credits in the next movie. I know you deserve the credit, but the megabytes do add up.

Either that, or make the credits shorter.

I liked the movie though, awesome camera angles.

I really like how you had all the skulks slowly inch their way to their prey. The tension was very thick.
  • EclipseEclipse Join Date: 2003-01-18 Member: 12444Members
I thought it was pretty damn cool over all. From a gaming standpoint they were screwed when they welded the blast door, no corner checking or nothing <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

But in all honesty, thats how I picture the game's story and backround info to be like. TSA marines going in with little knowledge of what their upagainst and the next thing you know your just gettin zerged to hell and back.

Hats off to you Chaos Films for an excellent short.

but yea...that final scream was pretty weak <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> also, its kinda weird hearing the skulks *gookduuk* of the use button when their trying to walk.

Oo, good point Eclipse. I imagine they did it to get a really slow walk... next time, be sure the "cameraman" renames or replaces the wav file for the kharaa "use" command. Then he won't hear anything.
  • Speed_2_DaveSpeed_2_Dave Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8788Members
I think they wanted to make it sound like the aliens were talking to each other? I think the using noises were intentional... *shrug* oh well, there goes my understanding of a 5 minute film.
  • ArchzaiArchzai Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 8007Members
personally i was quite disappointed esepcially since the beginning was so good too

the later parts jus got sorta lame.... ok i knew those two who got locked back would die... then its pretty dumb from there on... ie... the HA guy getting killed.. WTH.... anyone in their rite mind woulda welded the HA guy yeah??

i was quite disappointed from the lack of action and acutal plot... it was extremely short and didnt cover much in that video... hopefully part II will be better

jus like how militia I sorta sucked... but Militia II was the bomb! omg... perfect camera angles and cinematics... haha but some of the voicing was corny/ over exagerated.... i personally NOT being southern tho.... acutally found it sorta mean how they over exaggerated the southern accent...
  • PseudoKnightPseudoKnight Join Date: 2002-06-18 Member: 791Members
Keep in mind that this is a film, not an actual game. There was no need to weld the HA or have a realistic amount of skulks.
  • Jon_VincibleJon_Vincible Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5804Members
OMW!!! THAT WAS GREAT!!! That movie was so awesome! When all the skulks were pouring out of the window! I couldn't stop laughing with excitment. Excellent camera work too. Those subtle panning motions and whatnot, great great work. I can't wait for the sequel and the "1.1 preview" movie it mentioned in the readme. I'm eager to see some of the DOD videos I think someone mentioned these guys did first.

Nice job with the movie, guys. I thought the camera work was excellent, and you did a good job of keeping the camera always moving, which heightened the sense of action and suspense. Overall I felt the movie really captured the feeling of NS.

I do agree with most of the criticisms about it from a conceptual / plot standpoint, and in the future would like to see a bit more character and story development. Obviously I'm not expecting a Scorsese film here or anything, but it would be nice to see you guys push the boundaries of this aesthetic form, and figure out ways of offsetting the natural limitations of this type of media (i.e. player models which have no facial animations or expressions) to make the characters and story more engaging. Also, I'd just like to point out that there is a whole world and backstory that has been developed by our writer, Jeff Paris, and it might be interesting if you guys chose to delve into that a bit at some point.

My only other crit is that, while I thought for the majority of the film the editing and pacing were quite good, I would have liked to see some faster cuts during the action scenes at the end. I think if the length of some of those shots were shorter it would have added a more dynamic quality to the action that was occuring.

Other then these few areas that could be improved I think you guys did a great job of making a very solid and proffessional film, and I can't wait to see what you have in store for the rest.

Added: Oh, and you know that slow motion of the guy getting killed by a leap, repeated 5 times, am I the only one who has the impression the fall animation has been taken in HLMV and pasted over a background? I don't know if the angle of the camera has been special or something but it looks... weird.

Great movie! The camera angles and panning were fantastic! I love the part where the last marine is shooting the <b>skulks</b> (ahem) and the shells are falling toward the camera.

    Constructive criticism:
I didn't like the part just before that where they are walking towards him and they are making the "use sound". Anyone with limited knowledge of the game probably said "WTH?" at that part. I also thought it was kind of cheesy how he wasted his whole HMG clip while the skulks stood perfectly still. You could have made them run around a bit and actually dodge. Yeah, and not to be mean, but I burst out laughing when I heard that scream <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Actually, being on the of the skulks...well...the original skulks...that noise was as far as I know because some people didn't seem to get it when we said to type "+use" in the console and kept using the use key instead...;P

For the people wondering about the 'use' noises and such...well we do get our actors from people who are kinda on at the time. Sometimes they decide to have a little fun when it's time to get some work down. Sorta unavoidable.
It was an enjoyable experience though in filming this movie. We try to look for mature actors. While there may be a little screwing around on set, when it comes time to film, every actor needs to take their place. Kinda hard to do when you're excited about filming though <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

Man, this was a movie, not a game play demo.

To be honest, I shouldn't expect the community to be smarter, with the Six Days in Sanji as the official fiction. I mean honestly, the great skill of that author is so completly wasted in that story.
