I don't know if people have already playtested before, but before saying it is great fun (now I admit it is... I even find it great) but you have to know you are playing to test. (thus play-test) That means, trying to hunt down what's wrong, find an eventual bug, etc... It's not really like a game, it's like a test...
Playtesting is definitely alot of work, much more then i think you all realize. All of the original testers had to go through a good 5+ page questionare regarding thoughts on the game and improvements. Playtesting is largely bug finding and idea suggestion, more then it is playing, and alot of this is reflecting on anothers ideas and adding to them. Alot of playtesting is balance, idea, and bug discussion, in fact, probably 80% of it is. The other 20% is bugging MonsE about bandwith problems on RR during a new client build. =D
I admit, playing ns is fun, but there is a high responsibility that comes with the entire testing job. No current playtester is a playtester just because he wants to play ns.
I heard that Flayra was right now in touch with 3DRealms to get all the NS content put into Duke Nukem. The resouces would be replaced by babes, which are being supplied by Playboy. And he needs some testers to make sure the babes are up to quality. Right now there's an auction going on to be one of the Quality Assurance leads for the Duke Babe project, all you need to do is send in your "resume" through the paypal button on the homepage.
Me and some of friends whacked together our own RPG system, something that was meant to be quick to roll characters up for one off gaming session and then dropped just as quickly.
We'd spent ages on-line and in person discussing how to tweak and change it, playing devil's advocate with each other's ideas. We'd then play it for one session (1 ~ 2 hours) and discuss what worked, what didn't, tweak and change, play again etc.
It took about a month, and this was just a simple pen'n'paper RPG. The best bit was seeing how changes we'd made improved the gameplay, thats the satisfaction you get from Pt'ing, not just playing the game itself.
Of course this was just a little RPG. The NS PTs get to see changes and tweaked they help make enjoyed by thousands of people, which is probably quite nice

Good thing.
This is no offense to sYn, I've played alongside a few, fair do's, but we don't need another 'celebrity clan' situtation, where every newb between here & Khazakistan tries to get into sYn, and mentions them all the time, bleh bleh bleh.
I'm sure the guys are great, but a clan like that sooner causes more disruption to a community that it makes harmony. (And it does eventually tend to give that 'better than thou' attitude to some players who are part.)
The testers will be selected among a special race of immortal hobbits that you will never meet or hear of. Those damn hobbits beta everything, and if it weren't for them, silly normal people like us might have a chance at being picked as a tester.
I doubt it is required, but on the offchance it is, I'm happy to give a responsible playtester admin privs to my server if another beta server is required.
Not saying I want to playtest (though I do) but TBH I wouldn't have the time to dedicate to playtesting NS that is required and deserved by this fine mod. I AM happy however to set the server up with whatever is required for testing at any stage of the development, and I don't mind getting nothing in return.
nonetheless, PM me if an extra server is required (it's in the UK)

Playtesters (From Here on PT's) are chosen from the forums. The prospective PT must be a regular forum goer who has a good knowlege of the game and community. The prospective PT must be good at communicating as well.

Yes, but they already have a crap load of PTs
If replacements are needed they will (as in the past) come from: 1) respectable clans (they have used some CS clans for testing before) 2) Insightful, intelegent, and collected forum/IRC regs who often post useful things
IE: read the FAQs, help people out, don't complain, don't flame the newbs, and don't ask to be a PT. The reason why atleast some of the PTs are now Mods (coil) is due to these exact traits.
If I hadn't just started Uni (and opened a floodgate of work), I'd flail my arms and whine ineffectually about wanting to be a beta tester. I'd love to, but I'm not going to get picked and I've got too much to do anyway

gawd I wanna playtest NS D:

In other words
I got no chance ;D
Clear?

And the existing ones came about how.......?

That, of course, is if new PT's are selected.
And everybody keeps saying Sauron is the bad guy. I'ld be unhappy too if some hairy little **** stole my "World Domination Ring Beta 3.2".
Damned dirty Hobbits.
