Trying To Run Win98 W/ Cablemodem

<div class="IPBDescription">Help please!</div> I brushed off the dust from my old Dell Latitude CP laptop and installed win98, drivers, dx9 etc... Plugged the cat5 cable from my cablemodem to the lancard, set internet connection to lan and automatic proxy detection. No cigar... the status bar on the browser says detecting network... then page not found. The tcp/ip on the lancard is installed... Anyone know how to set win98 to use with a cable modem? Pls. help... Thanks!

    Gah... so many variables, so little info...

    Does your card show a link light and activity?
    When you type 'winipcfg" in Start | Run, do you have a DHCP address? Is it 169.x.x.x?
    When you open a DOS prompt and type "ping yahoo.com" what does it return?
    When you type "ping 66.218.71.198" what does it return?

    I had a cable modem with Win 98SE...do you have win98 SE or just win98? That might be a problem also; I'm not sure.

    It *should* work though, I had a Compaq 266 MHz computer with Win95 running a cable modem <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Hello, thanks for the replies. The led shows activity. When I typed winipcfg It showed a dropbox with PPP adapter that had 0.0.0.0 for all and the 3com 3C90x Ethernet that has "Ip Autoconfig Add:169.254...etc... "subnet mask" 255.255.0.0 "default gateway" blank. I tried release and renew, when renewing error message says "DHCP Server Unavailable Renewing adapter" The advanced congig has all otions blank except for node type "Broadcast". When I typed ping yahoo.com at prompt it says Unknown host. When I typed 66.218... "Destination host unreachable" I also tried setting primary network logon from "Microsfot Family Logon" to "Client for Microsoft Networks" Still not working. I just wanted to update my windows and drivers because the cd-rom of the laptop is faulty and it doesn't have a floppy <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> Thanks alot for the help!
