Ok. I am running a Geforce 4 MX 420. I got it with my Dell Demension, which I have had for a year. Mr.Geforce has been so good to me, untill now. I was all happy one night, playing ns, game ended, I logged off and shut down. I get back on in the morning, and my internet isnt working. Ok, the problem was with my OS and my wireless router. Fixed it by installing a fresh new copy of windows (like creating a fresh user file) Oh happy day! It is fixed! I try and log on to NS, but oops! It says it cannot support the mode of opengl! Ok...fine, update drivers. 41.09 detonator drivers. Wow, installed, works. Wierd thing is...I get 60fps, and sometimes this 60fps shoots down to 20-30 when people, or structures come on the screen. Ouch. Ok, its fine, delete the existing drivers, then restart. Comp detected and installed the drivers when it rebooted, ok good. Now it is like it was when I got the thing. Same problem. Hmm. Log onto MIRC, ask for help. Ok, Set moniter to 100hz. Then set geforce to antilising off. Hmm? Where is v_sync option? Ok, contact friend, he tells me to update drivers. I do it, but windows says I have to deinstall my existing ones to install the 41.09 drivers. Ok, did that, then tried to install the new ones. WARNING!! Windows has detected that these drivers are not endorsed/stampped with windows certification. Friend says override that, install them anyways. Ok, done, reboot. Wierd, still have a problem. Switch moniter back to 100hz, switch Geforce 4 performance on to agressive. SAME problem!!!Antialising off, Anisotrophic filtering off. But NO v_sync option!! My friend says that can cut my framerate in half sometimes. But the option is not there. HEP MEE!!!!!! Im going insain!! If I have to call another tech support person I will rip something apart!

So, I have a 1.34GHZ Athlon XP+ 1500 and 256MB DDR with GeForce4 MX460 64MB AGP and I play 1280x960 OpenGL.
I get 71FPS solid whenevever there's not alot of activity on the screen, but it'll drop down to 60FPS if I look at alot of structure's.
I don't see why your FPS going down would be a big deal unless you would suddenly lag out with 5FPS (my old P2 computer).
Turn off Vertical Sync in OpenGL settings in your display setting's for your videocard and it'll let you have (atleast) 71FPS max (or higher).
But, don't post stupid posts about your FPS being too low unless it's effecting your game performance.

I heard that the Mx chipset is sometimes unstable. (This may be why yours in having trouble and others not) My brother is a serious network/hardware guy. He told me that when I was gonna upgrade my video to NOT USE MX chipset. If you benchmark your card with the almighty onion (www.futuremark.com ), you'll notice that all MX cards perform much lower(sometimes 30% diff, and the Ti cards are not much more $$ and perform a hella lot betta) then the Ti cards. I realize you have a dell, for this I am sorry. (jus a joke)

jus my 2 cents.....I realize I didnt give much advice besides criticism, but try benchmarking it and see how she runs...use the link above.

I have the same video card you have and here's to get to turn off "V-Sync":

1)Right Click and click on Properties
2)Settings tab
3)Advance
4)GeForce4 MS 420 tab
5)Additional Properties...
6)OpenGL tab
7)Look for Vertical Sync
8)Set it "Always Off"

P.S. What does antialiasing do?

Antialiasing makes me lag to hell and back. o_o;
Also, the reason I have a MX460 is because it's pretty much a huge-improvement over my.. *cough* GeForce2 MX200 32MB.
And it was only $60, compared to the Ti4200's and Ti4600's that were $160 at the time..

Well i dont really know if your Video card supportds D3D but if it does just stop the madness and use D3D.Otherwise you might want to use a 1024x768 res and see if that works. If that doesnt work then well, I think the GeForce FX is coming out soon if it is really bugging you that much get that it's supposed to be like really awesome.
