Seriously, don't do it
Little **** at Microsoft fail to tell you that DESPITE unchecking file associations during setup it WILL associate itself with EVERYTHING that Microsofts feels is it's right to. MP3's MPG's EVERYTHING. You cannot uninstall it. You cannot re- associate the extensions. You cannot delete the executable, it wil re-create itself 5 seconds after you delete it. If you wipe wmplayer.exe out of the registry, instead of getting an error when you click on something it does nothing.
IF YOU INSTALL WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 9 THE ONLY WAY YOU WILL BE ABLE TO USE ANOTHER PROGRAM FOR MEDIA IS TO OPEN THAT PROGRAM FIRST. YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO ASSOCIATE ANOTHER PROGRAM WITH YOUR MEDIA FILES. PERIOD.
Just a warning guys...............

Who cares?
But that's for the warning!
And it hasn't messed with anything.
MusicMatch Uses 0 - 1% and Windows Media now uses well over 25% of my 1ghz processor... Exactly what is it doing thats using so much processing power? My mp3's dont sound any different
Edit: Ummm, yeah, it seems that if you set Media Player to be associated with that filetype during install it can't be changed. Another customer rape, brought to you by Microsoft Inc. Good thing I didn't set mp3 as one of the filetypes. *shudders*

get the file associations back?
I use Winamp for mp3 and midi, RealPlayer for Realthings, Quicktime for Quicktime things and it's also my browser plugin for MIME-content. I use Cyberlink PowerDVD for MPGs, AVIs etc. Big old mess.
I think the dollars spent on WMP9 was to ramp up on the Digital Rights Management scam. This build is more meant as a seller to the media conglomerates and the users are expected to shut up and bend over and take this "as is" including trojans that allows MS to silently upgrade what they see fit without asking you about it. Naturally I've put my WMP9 on a short leash so that it does not muck about outside my computer. Which it tries to regularly.
So if you MUST avoid using WMP9 and cry wolf about it, at least do it due to the DRM debauchery.
go get your self Twins Video Player)
free, and efficent (no it is not add/spy/shareware you don't get pesered to register. The only pop up are WOW youve watched 500 movies, you must really like them)
and get your self Winamp 2.x
much better then 3.x and hells of better then wimp
and if you want visulizations MUCH better then wimp
and that, sirs and ladies, is the rest of the story.
*death to Trojans!*
I had unchecked all "associate with" options during install, but the installer did it anyway. Of course I immediately noticed this and tried to undo it, which it would not allow.
But after a lot of cursing (you have to curse or it won't get fixed) and playing with things.................
Only way to do it:
1. First make sure you reboot. I don't know why but this was part of the problem. Until I rebboted changing the asociations back to what I wanted was impossible.
2. Open Media Player 9
3. On the toolbar choose Tools, then Options
4. In the options menu, choose the File Types tab
5. Deselect anything you don't want MP9 running
IF you try and do it the NORMAL way, using Windows Explorer/tools/options/filetypes, you will find that it doesn't work. apparently the setup in media player overrides this. However, It still remains that you canot delete or even raname the wmplayer.exe file because 5 seconds later it will notice it's missing and re-create itself
None of the previous versions of media player have ever
stolen all my associations during install. If I put an item in the recycle bin or rename it, I do not want the operating system to re-create the file 5 seconds later while I am trying to trouble
shoot the problem. If they are so damn concerned with
novices accidentally deleting it, should've made it a
system file. That's what those are for.
EDIT
Ans BTW, I agree with Dearth. There was no upgrade. Microsoft said it handles digital better, but I'm sure ithad more to do with self-serving intrests. What else that you could add to a media player could possibly cost half a mil?
Sasami2k, plays everything barring the licensed formats like .rm.
It's very minimalist, the interface is kept as simple as possible, but the player works brilliantly. It has buckets of options for tweaking the video display or audio, but these options are not shoved in your face, they are just there when you need them. Supersampling and other effects mean it usually provides better image quality than WMP. No adware, no registration, small download. Would recommend it to anyone.
And i use good old winamp for mp3s.

Notice that nowhere in this entire statement is the phrase:
'Whoops, my mistake.'

spyware, chum. spyware.
1. Goto any folder you have, i.e.: My Documents
2. For windows XP users, and most others, click Tools > Folder Options
- If you don't see it there check the View menu.
3. In Folder Options Select the tab that says File Types
4. Find the extentions that MediaPlayer 9 Overwrote, i.e.: MP3
5. On the bottum of the page you will see the program this file is associated with.
- To change it merly click the change button and select the program you want it to open with.
6. Then hit Ok and Apply, and close the window.
7. Repeat steps 4-6 as necissary.
Done. Hope that helps. If you have further questions pm me.
It's open-source, so you don't have to worry about spyware or trojans.

I had no issues with it trying to assosiate it self with anything I didn't want it to.
Microsoft derserves dogpiling. I am sure they are only marginally more corrupt and powermongering than your local Amicable Industrial Conglomerate. They just get caught red handed. Such as allowing themselves the right to install software on your machine automatically when you are on the net WITHOUT your knowledge. They're even convicted monopolists. Anyone with such money piles deserve a good razzing lest they grow content and fat. They got coffers filled with money, so a bit of a dog piling can't hurt.
Clickthrough agreements are probably the mostly abused invention by the software industry.
Now, this has nothing to do with the actual QUALITY of WMP9. It's a fine program for most things, but I dont like it's stupid unintuitive media library. And that it sucks more ressources than other players. So I use alternatives while keeping WMP9 barred up behind a firewall - it's that simple.

Or you try reading my post before you respond.
I did read it. I did what it said. The installer didn't do what the installer was told to do.
