Like O2, the snowflake, and fire
What are their effects and what causes each? When an OC shoots me, I get the O2 flash. Does this me underwater I would automatically suffocating after getting hit by an OC?
The environment icons had use in Half Life, the original game. Going underwater and running out of breath brought up the O2 sign.. there was also a radiation sign, and a snowflake for frost/cold and fire for.. fire/heat.

I think radiation damage on some maps would be interesting, or electrical damage. I mean it's built into the engine, why not use it?
Those icons are hangovers from the HL engine, and remain the last bits of HL that would be seen in NS for whatever reason. They may or may not be removed...
