<div class="IPBDescription">Which should i use?</div> Hi, i have a 128 mb ram, 666mhz pentium 3 geforce 4 mx 420 v card. Need to know if i will/can be able to play in 1024 without loosing too much fps. Also how much, roughly, fps do i lose from switching from 800x600 to 1024 ? and one more thing <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> Is it RAM i want or more MHZ i want to speed up the fps? Thanks for any help given

Oh yeah... You might wanna stick to 800x600 until you upgrade a little.
But just give 1024x768 a try anyway.
I run 800x600 by the way...
Mainly because I just prefer 800x600 over 1024x768...
No real reason.
Anyway...
PIII 1 GHz
256 PC133 SDRAM
PNY Verto GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64 DDR (slightly overclocked to 266core,515mem)
Good ol' Win ME =p
get the command thingy up and type net_graph 3

cl_showfps 1 is better - it doesn't obscure as much of your screen, plus it has less of a performance impact <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
All ram runs at a certain speed - you should really get ram that matches the speed of your current stuff (unless you're completely replacing it), but if you mismatch speeds your computer should be able to handle it - possibly by running all memory at the speed of the slowest set. Also, the speeds you can use might be limited by your motherboard - normal SDRAM (which you'll be using) comes as PC66, PC100 and PC133, the numbers being the speed in MHz.
Wow, it's tech support day <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Yeah, mine's a little like that - my fps maxes out in some areas (like some Ready Rooms) and other times I can look straight at a wall and get under 10 fps (Ventilation hive in caged, for example). I can only guess it's some kind of CPU bottleneck. Or maybe it's this memory I installed
Its not too bad with HL...but its a total nightmare with MOH:AA
fps doesn't affect building or movement speed (although it's currently tied into the JP recharge rate) - the hardest thing is jumping around trying to bite marines with 9 fps. Plus I'm convinced it ties into your accuracy too, although I'd have to play on a better computer to see if it's any easier

cl_showfps 1 is another one.
computer specs:
850 MHz Athlon
nvidia TNT2 Vanta 16 MB AGP
384 MB PC100 SDRAM
Win98 SE
I run NS at 800x600, vsync off and 16-bit color, and get around low 70s in the ready room, high 50s staring at a wall, low 30s to mid 20s when fighting, and low 20s at a marine base. I've gotten teen numbers staring at an unused resource node though.
I also have a second computer (P3 800, 128 PC100, ati all-in-wonder 32 MB AGP, win98SE) that gets similar results at 1024x768. Strange thing is, it gets slightly crappier performance at 800x600 on the second computer than on the first one. It's probably because it has less RAM and because of the crappy ati drivers.
I got 1000Mhz AMD athlon and 256 PC133 SDRAM.
With 1152x768 resolution my fps is 30-60 and in firefight it drops to 10. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Once i tryed 800x600, but it didn't help much <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
EDIT:
And usually when fps goes to 10, iam skulk food <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
i complain and **** about how i dont get 99fps all the time, i usually get 70fps max and it dips down depending on whats around. I even bought a new vid card recently... but its a pos and i took that sh*t out and im sending it back. FKU ATI 9500 with softmod.
I'm fairly certain that fps DOES tie into building speed, alien energy recharge, welding speed, etc. But I could be wrong.
After playing NS for a few weeks, a couple friends helped me tweak my system to get better fps (up to hovering at 99 instead of locked at 70). At first, it made my aim a little *worse*, but that's only because I wasn't used to it.
Things seemed a lot smoother, especially when quickly turning - when aim matters the most. After I got used to it, I'm certain that it's made things much easier to hit.
Don't get me wrong, some of the best shot's I've seen use systems that never get higher than 60 fps. But more fps certainly can't hurt.
128mb of ram is definetely not enough if you want a high amount of fps. I would definetely recommend at least 256mb.
Also, check out the tweaking section at <a href='http://www.readyroom.org' target='_blank'>The Readyroom</a>. I did alot of those tweaks, and I got some pretty nice performance boosts.
When I first Started Playing ns, My specs were:
PIII 450Mhz, 320 MB SDRam, GF3 Ti200
I would get 50 at most FPS, but never constant. It would be 50-10 FPS. I always noticed people building faster than me and see JP last longer. And I would always die easily. And this was in 800x600 Mode
Now I got:
AMD 2100 XP+, nVidia Nforce motherboard, 256MB DDR Ram PC2100, GF3 Ti200 ( I built the pc )
I get now 80FPS Constant. Sometimes it dips in situations but the most, always 80Constant on 1024x720. I built faster, I noticed Def. Chambers go up faster, and when I jp, I would Jp around and not use more than 1/4 the Fuel, and with old pc specs, I would take up the whole fuel. And seems easier to kill.
Yea the PC Specs determine your gaming, so if you have PC specs lower than 1 Gigz and lower than gf3 and SDRam, stay with 800x600. Otherwise go with 1024x720 or Higher if you have a hot pc.
-Flippy
P4 2.2
512 memory
Radeon 8500 (64 meg)
80 gig hard drive
I think that's all that matters for it, but I run on 1600x1200 resolution, 32 bit colors, and I get on average, 40-60 FPS
