Guess What. Lag.

Can't find the cause..
Hullo, Over the past few weeks I've been dealing with extreme lag on many servers, and even on servers I visit often, I will get lag that is betwen 4K-5K. Staring. At. A. Wall.
Staring at a wall, no turret farms, fighting, other people, ect about.

I have only 1 sever that my ping can be even remotely dependable upon, and commonly during my playing hours, no one is on the server..
A few other servers I may have playable pings upon (200-500 while not frozen), but common spikes 2K+, in which time I may freeze up for up to 3 minutes at a time, and, being a fairly patient person (IMHO), will sit there for this time, only to find I've been killed.

On my computer, I have nothing except for C-D running while playing. On the other computer on my network, I will make sure nothing is running. I try to defrag/scandisk/run adaware every other day as well as constantly running about and doing other things to tweak my comp's performance.

System specs are as follows:
Pentium 4 1.3GHz
128MB RD RAM
Soundblaster PCI
Windows ME

Comp 2 on Network:
Pentium 4 1.5GHz
256 SD RAM
Sound (??)
Windows XP

I have read the FAQ, and, every server behaves like this. Other people I have spoken wtih tell me they are running the same connection, even-worse system setups, on the same servers as I do, and manage to get ~100 ping as I'm frozen, dealing with my ping of 900. I am running on 56K out of Texas and try to only connect to U.S. servers.

And.. Before someone shouts 'get broadband', It is out of my reach at the moment..

Thanks

    Get broadband!

But seriously, your net connection is really the bottleneck here. Half-Life is really skimpy on system requirements, but nothing can save you from a cruddy dialup connection. Some dialup is better than others, of course, so if you've got different ISPs in your area, you might want to shop around a bit.

Another solution if broadband is out of your reach: move to an area with more local NS servers, since your connection problems only grow with distance between you and the server. At any given time I usually have access to 15-20 servers that are close enough to me to have respectable pings (I live in the SF Bay Area); if you've only got 1, it means there aren't enough servers near you.

Running your own server fixes the problem without you having to move, but you'd have to buy broadband access for that anyway, and I'm assuming that when you say "out of my reach" you mean the money, not the technology. (If it's the technology, that makes a good case for moving - it doesn't count as civilization if there's no broadband support.)

These are your options. Out of all of these, I'm going to say that your best option is to get a part-time job (or if you already have a job, figure out a way to trim $50 from your monthly budget, which should be easy enough), and get yourself a DSL connection. It'll be the best thing you ever did, trust me.

It could possibly be your internet connection.

You may want to send an e-mail to your ISP complaining about the way they are routing your packets. (Meaning they are sending them on a long route instead of sending them the shortest route.)

This is something that happens quite often when a network segment gets "overused" and they try and remove some traffic.

I live in the Austin area, plenty of servers near me, all lagged.. My ISP is Great Barrier Reef, which is a fairly respectable ISP, but I will run a traceroute to see where it's hopping.. In past experiences with @home/cox cable, we've had horrible routes, all over and out of the country just to end up at a server in a city a few miles away, so I will check that.. In Fact.. I'm gonna run a traceroute right now.. Lezzee ere...
.....17 hops. Herein lies my problem.
I am off to collect more IPs to ping!
    Thanks for the help folks..

    Hops traced on random servers..

    Network 42: 18 hops.
Texas Militia: Lost link at 19 hops(traceroute caps at 20 hops) 20+ hops.
Fists of Ra: Lost at 18, 20+ hops.
    JigglyPuff's Jigglyroom: 18 hops
    Hullu's Laggy: 16 hops, many unknown/dead links.
    Got Rice?: 15 hops.
H20-5: Lost connection at 8 hops.

On most servers, I would get 5-10+ hops, just on Alter.net/esprise.net. My ISP gave me 2 hops each time. I do beleive I'll be looking into the alter/esprise situation.. It is a bit odd how many hops I have to go through just to get out of my area..
