You need a Pentium II 400 mhz machine CPU (or equivalent non-Intel), 32 megabytes of RAM and any graphics accelerator supported by Half-life. Software rendering support is planned for the future, but not until a future release of Half-life. You also need an internet connection, a keyboard and a mouse. Windows 95 and above are supported. Lastly, you'll need a copy of Half-life or Counter-strike retail. If your machine runs one of these well, it should run Natural Selection comparably.

Well people say that if you can run CS you can run NS, I guess it would be the same for system requirements...Counter-Strike's Requirements

Yeah, if you can run CS or Half-Life, NS will run, but NS has higher requirements to run well. I get solid 99 FPS on my computer in CS, but the highest I get in NS is about 70 or so, and it dips as low as 30 occasionally. CS never dipped, always locked at 99.

I wouldn't recommend anything less than a P3-800, GeForce 2 GTS or something else in that range, and some 128m RAM at least, I'm guessing.

It'll run on slower systems then that, but if you are a performance buff who needs really high FPS to enjoy your games, you'll need something better...

fps_max 150 or fpsmax 150 (as far as I know, setting your FPS maximum higher than it can obviously go will not lag you)

I know I was stuck at 72 FPS for a while till I put it up more.

To raise above 60fps, you likely need to turn off vsync in your video card's settings. Thing is, there's really no reason to go over 60fps (unless you have a monitor that supports higher) besides to exploit the jetpack bugs which will be fixed in v1.1 anyway.

I play NS on an Ath-700 myself, with a Kyro2 64MB. Plays nice and smooth. I'd only drop as far as a 600 and expect *decent* playability.. a 400 (especially with an nVidiot card) will more likely than not drop to a slideshow, especially in the Marine base. Though you'll likely still be able to play, so long as you don't spend too much time in heavily-built areas.

I used to play NS on a p2 350Mhz and it rarely dropped to a slideshow except on ns_caged.

I used to play on PIII 450mhz with a voodoo 3 3000 and 128megs of RAM, never had any problems using the jetpack even if i only get 30fps

What do you mean with 32Mb gfx card? Although the amount of memory does make a difference, it's not that great. Like if you changed from a 32Mb GF2 to a 128 MB GF4 MX I doubt you'd noticed much of a difference (GF4 MX is actually a GF2).

But if you changed from a 128MB GF4MX to a 64Mb GF4Ti4600 (an actual GF4 not a GF2 in disguise like the MX) there would be a hugh difference. (donno if there actually are any 64Mb Ti4600)

If you get 40-50fps you probably have a TNT2 or a first generation GF (GF1).

NS uses WAY more objects (and so object polygons) than most other mods.
Imagine Running CS with a high decal limit and the most detailed models for everything with 32 playeers in one room.
This may equal an average big fight of 10 players 20 turrets and all other stuff of one room.

other problem of many objects (and large rlevels) in NS is the ping, wich is ALWAYS 2-4 times higher than on CS (so bad for 65k).
But You dont need a low ping as much as in CS, because teamwork and close combat is more important than aiming.

One of my slower pc's is a P3-750 with a Tnt2ultra in it. I am seriously considering a better graphics card however, it is playable. I would not attempt NS on anything with a lesser graphics card. You can probably get away with a PII-400 so long as you put a decent games card in there, like a GeForce Ti series. Once you have 600-800mhz (intel not amd) you should be ok with an Gf4-MX although I'd never buy or recommend and MX series they are cheap and better suited to openGL games than many of the competitor cards.

The reason I say intel and not amd is that amd performance varies so much from application to application and the reliablity of amd based systems varies so much that I've stayed clear of them for many years. I still set them up and test them when the need arises but I've yet to have been sold on the idea that a £150amd is actually better value than a £150 intel chip. {This is my opinion. I am not open to discusion about it. I reserve the right to chance my opinions at a future date without prior notice.}
