Somone do it :D
There must be a single player expansion eventually Im just surprised no one has started work on one. It could be a "plugin" to NS, it would just need to pull resources and files from the NS folder. And the NS DLL would have to be upgraded to include the new weapons and such. Which could cause problems (having to have everyone, expansion or not, upgrade their DLL when a bug is found).
Anyhow, back to the topic. You could play a Marine, have multiple experimental weapons to use (which arent in multiplayer, because only the LMG, HMG, and Pistol are highly tested and reliable ) such as the Flamethrower
Eventually there would be an add on pack, which let you play a different campaign as an Alien. That would be completely cool, since 99% of the games out there have you KILLING the Aliens, not playing them. Or maybe you would play an Alien/Human hybrid of some sort, so you could use human weapons. Imagine going up against HA/HMG Marines, or even a squad of them. They would be toned down of course
So many possibilities. Maybe Valve will release the engine souce code to Flay someday so we can have spiffy stuff like bump mapping and 32bit textures

As for single player. Sure it could happen as you say, but it wouldnt be ns. There is a game known as alien vs preditor. Look into it and you will find something similar to what you would end up wtih if what you wanted happened. Preditor, high tech weaponry. Aliens, run on walls and like bite stuff.
Ego
[FACT] - 100% certified insanity
AVP2 rocked!
and yes an NS single player story mode would make me wanna buy the game instead of downloading it.
If there was a single player campain it has to be done right, which means we don't make the huge mistake of Wizard Wars and have it done in house.
We need an relatively simple Neil Manke kind of deal, with good mapping, but simple game play.
Infact, I am thinking, can't you just import NS weapons to HL? I obviusly lack the technical know how, but...
Thing about it: In Opposing Force, you play as a marine, primarly fighting aliens.
NS single player would be nice but it's not happening any time soon.
And whoever said AVP sucked and that NS SP would be better really needs a life
just image the diffrent aspects you could live all through single player NS.
quip up on the oribiting space station, phase in, group up and send off to way point X with ur team when DUN DUN DUN!
an amazing set piece takes part when all the windows go samsh smash and lots of explosions then goes all dark and chuckles and gibs flying everywhere and vents cracking open and some alien blasting going on from your team as stuff goes flying and ur trying to back out behind you and close the airlock and sha boomm!!
mmmmmh, well that was just circling around my head for a few minutes.
but i must concour.
dream on...
However, I lied.
LIES
It would be great if NS could be heavily modded - although once again it would be best to be without the glut of junk squeezing out normal NS, or whatever is great. But I really want to see
NS Safari - hunt Onos and company out on the savannah
NS Bullfight - dodge Onos, jump over skulks as they try to munch you, meanwhile slowly knif0ring them to death!
... or a cooperatively multiplayer NS Bast, where you have a live crew on an uninfested Bast like ship explore the living universe. This could be just your buddies in a computer universe or massively multiplayer, with live human crews on the other ships in the galaxy and maybe even all live humans on every single station outpost moon planet system you visit (and of course for the aliens). You could incorporate the whole world (Earth I mean) into this, and have a *real* imaginary economy (unlike the fake "fake" economy that anti tech people imagine) and whole society engaged in the game.
Of course there are obvious problems if the whole world gets addicted.
But just imagine, you and your crew, flying a ship like Bast through an entire galaxy.. you could be space pirates, bounty hunters, could chase other pirates, rob freighters, fight warships, board stations, make landfall on planets, cleanse infestations.. it would be like a movie or TV series
THAT dear readers is the future of entertainment: game and movie/TV convergence. People will BE the actors, LIVE the roles, FIGHT the aliens, GET the girl, whatever. But before all that happens,
I want this game.
Where you pilot a fully functional ship with all your buddies on board, flying through the galaxy, doing as you please. Would r0x0r
Aside from the game though, going back to the issue of getting lots of people hooked on the game, let's look at it a different way. Imagine an online community, a cohesive one, like a club or a clan, so vast in scale that it includes hundreds of thousands of people. Imagine that they have some sort of united agenda. Now what if they turned into a political entity? Not just a political group that has online communication but some sort of virtual country - they all declare independence or what not - would be rather messed up.
Or imagine a world with an "imaginary" economy, where most of the population is tied up into virtual transactions, maybe robbing people in this giant "game" or "research" and paying taxes.. the taxes would be real But imagine that you pay imaginary taxes to an imaginary government, but at the same time your whole life is spent in this game, there IS no real life except food sex sleep and bathroom. Then that fake government might as well be the real government, your fake taxes the real taxes, your fake income your real income, and you would really be robbing people's money if you decided to do so in the game .. Obviously because the game architecture/structure needs creation and people need to eat and stay kind of fit for enough sex, that the entirely virtual society will probably not hapen.. but some kind of heavy mix will, I bet, in the future, and our children might think about it but not turn from it.
