i feel like dying anyway
now i realize how BadMofo must have felt when his hdd crashed... mine has just too, all my progress on ns_containment, all my textures, all my other special mapping projects, all my pr0n (cough), halflife and mods ... im this close to going berserk and take the bloody hdd and use it to break the nose of the guy who sold it to me... western digital is useless
btw, is it very expensive to have some data recovered from a hdd with a malfunction motor?
i heard its possible and i REALLY need to get ns_containment back ... used the past year to create, reshape it, restart it and just overall getting better at mapping
i had so much progress to show, around 20 screenshots of 3 hives, a lot of rooms and a marinespawn...
its sad that i get so frustrated about alot of ones and zeros but still... ive used so much time to create it so its kinda logical that one get sad and angry

did the motor go bad, or what happened? explain in more detail. Was it a virus? A surge? What happened?

a hdd crash usually occurs if the read/write head "crashes" (touches) the hdd discs as far as I know... therefore damaging the disc and the data that's on it... I beleive there are some companies out there that could recover the data but it won't be nowhere near cheap
i miss making ns_containment :/
Alternativly you can call one of those companies that does data-recovery, but I think their programs eat money to work or something, they're very expensive in my experience. I gasped slightly when I called them back in the day, and promptly hung up.
If the drive isn't readable, do a bit of googling. Your data might even still be on there, without any damage. I read once about a super-hardcore trick of putting a broken harddrive in the freezer for a few hours (!), then putting it straight into a computer and copy over as much data as you can. For the drive, it's a one-way trip, but supposedly the cold can can warp the metal just enough to let the discs spin again. Anyway, essentially I'm just saying "go google on it for a bit".
Gaggle: I like how you refer to that technique as a "one way trip." That has been archived in my AIM profile. It's so funny that I was crying...
Infinity: I feel your pain. I'd march to Western Digital and go postal, short of just dying due to the lack of... of... stuff on my HDDs. May you prosper! And if you do decide to go postal, let me in on it!
I have heard this far too many times to be shocked by it. It is ultimatley frustrating to see people invest so much time into something and not bother to back it up.
I mean really, How long did it take you to DL all that pr0n? And to not have a backup? That is just plain sad.
Dude, Sucks to be you right now, Really sucks that we may never see this map of which you speak.
I hope it all works out for you. And I guess you will start to preach to others the value of having a backup of important data.

So if you find you simply can't detect... try finding some old pentium 2 and plug it in that.
A freind of mine on another forum just had the same problem with a WD HDD...whats with that? I thought WD was good...?
Go with Maxtor next time bro...Good luck on the data recovery and burn valuables to CD every other month at the least.
