because nubblets ... this is a two person job ... although Monse's head is big enough for both positions .. he still needs someone to protect his **** while he runs like a wimp ... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Anyway - there is no monthly fee. Its like HL, you can set up your own 12 (or so) person server and have anyone connect to it ...

I just spent the last several hours playing the demo. The story mission was absolutely great fun, but I found the freelancer missions becoming a bit repetitive. In the full version, what else can you do besides go fly out for a few minutes, shoot a few bad guys, and fly back? Actually, a whole lot more, from what I'm guessing.

I probably shouldn't talk, though. I got my butt whooped in a level 2 difficulty mission, heh. Whenever I find a way to actually get to the computer store I might well pick up this game. It seems very addictive....

Why do I even try to make threads?

Anyway, as far as I've played, the most exciting freelance mission is blowing up an enemy "base." I'm guessing maybe you have to be on good terms with exporation companies to play these fabbled original missions.

But the story missions are so incredible that you'll endure even the most dry of these kill ship missions just to see what the next one is. This game is well worth the coin just for the single player.

Now I was wondering, because of these 4 great ships and hence 4 different countries(not including all the other things) - in multiplayer can you be whichever one of those you want?

Because I'll be very angry if I have to play as the Yanks (Liberty) when in the next sector you have the British(Bretonia)!

I played it till 2am on my private server (IM me if you want the server name and password). I'm running an ultra prophitable trading route of water from planet Manhattan to planet Pittsburg, and Boron from planet Pittsburg back to planet Manhattan, all in my decked out freighter. Right now my net worth is about $120,000 and rises by about $2,000 per shipment.

    **POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD**

Please do not read this if you don't want parts of the game spoiled.

Well, Freelancer was fun at first, single player campaign kept me from class for more than enough time. Then it turned sour after I beat the game..

The game has awesome potential, but if they expanded on planetary interaction a bit more, it would be so worth it to play. However, the facet of multiplayer disillusioned me. Trainers (yes, <b>trainers</b>) work online. The online scene is somewhat boring due to the fact that there is no planetary interaction, just space flights. If you were able to wander around the cities on each planet it would have expanded the game's atmosphere tenfold.

The flight is great, although ridiculous since every ship's top speed seems to be the same, as well as their cruise engine speed. Afterburners are also a tad ludicrous in the game. Weapons are ingenious, but minimum level requirements are also silly (yet understandable for the single player campaign, earning stronger ships as you progress). One would think the militaries of the Houses would be roughly comparable, but the Defender compared to the Valkryie is just.. well you can tell for yourself. Hidden things and Jump Holes give you a great reason to explore and sensor degradation give this game a notch up in atmosphere. The Jump Gates and Trade Lanes are absolutely lovely, however the lack of barrel rolls and other complexities that makes a space sim a space sim just aren't there. Diablo in Space to coin a phrase. Wing Commander is what I loved for ages and I still do for obvious reasons. Freelancer is a great shoot'em up but beyond that it lacks the laziness that embodifies boring escort missions and the seriousness of an actual galactic war.

It has so much potential, great graphics, yet is lacking in many interactive departments. Originally I had read, the game was going to be drafted with eight selectable characters and ground interaction, I'm not sure why they scrapped it all and went with Mr. Trent as the only character (though the campaign dialogue seems very apparent, perhaps altered from the original campaign plotline?) but I was somewhat disappointed. Character generation and pointless interaction is very important to me as an RPG Player. I can't badly rate this game because the campaign was quite beautifully orchestrated, but it just lacks that special something that makes it my game of choice. Overall, I'd give it a 6.5

Either i am being a stupid fing n00b idiot, or something is wrong here.

When i install freelancer, the ID number is not created for me. Nor can i find it anywhere, or type any in.

They way it sounds, this number should be generated auromatically.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

Its a good game but its has some significant problems.

Travel time is extremely boring, half the times i turn it off is because I cant be bothered to go anywhere.

There isnt much to do. Trading is extremely boring and gives little reward. Exploring is even more boring, and is for the most part a complete waste of time. Fighting is good against other players but rubbish againt the CPU.

Once youve finished the story and explored abit all thats left of the game is an arcade space shooter online. In terms of its RPG element it falls flat on its face.

I find trading rather profitable ...

also, I rather like exploring in Freelancer .. I've found many unmapped systems and a few abandoned ships .. got some neat weapons out of them too <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Can someone post the full minimum/recommended specs to run the game? I've been poking around the game's website for the past 15 minutes trying to find it with no luck.

I'm 99.9% certain that the installer will choke itself laughing at my absurdly silly attempt to install it on this machine, but I'd still like to know what to expect, performance-wise. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    /me = best pirate

Get between any trade lane between a planet and preferably a jumpgate to a new system, shoot it to disable it, wait for cargo ships to come in, check the storage, if they have any valuables, shoot it, bring the stuff in and run !

Oh man, I've done this right in front of a planet with about 4 bounty hunters, a space station, and battleship, and a planet right there, hehe, I barely made it out of there !

My only problem with Freelancer, is that if you want to actually get involved with the organized crime, its pretty hard since as soon as you start MP they hate you, and if you try to kill navy ships, and fail all the navy missions they still hate you !

    Any help <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> ?

I played jumpgate and it made me despise travelling in space games :/. I find it really really boring just flying through space hoping I might eventually find something.

Trading is rewarding in terms of gaining money but not enjoyment (for me). Plus after a while you get more money than you will ever need.

It does well as a arcade shooter although different ship speeds would be nice, cruise disruptor would need toning down, and enhanced control of your ship for better dogfights.

Trading runs, especially long ones, can be really fun if you're in a group with some friends. It may take a while, but all the lane hacking, random enemy attacks at stations and jump gates, and other hazards make the experience ver enjoyable. And then, when you get the payoff at the end, it's just the icing on the cake.

This game is much more fun if you're in an organized group than if you're just out there alone.

I just downloaded the demo last night and tried it out, and <b>wow</b>!! I started playing with the intent to just play long enough to decide if I like it or not. Next thing I knew, it was 5am and the sky was beginning to lighten. It's been a very long time since any game has been able to do that (<i>well, excluding NS</i>).

I bought a cargo freighter, but I fail to see how it's worth the investment. I've only got about a dozen locations in my tradelist, and the best profit I can expect to get on items is around 30 credits each. I'm assuming it'd be much more varied in the full game.

The game also runs great on my system, which I wasn't expecting : Athlon650, 256mb sdram, 64mb Radeon 7000. Methinks I'll be making a trip to the Future Shop this week to pick this one up. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Artistically the game engine is very beautiful, and accomplishes that with some pretty economical system requirements. They make good use of colored lighting, and I think I see some specular mapping.

Unfortunately it looks like the game was shoved out the door by the "suits". Looks like there was no thought put into multiplayer, nor any bridges left standing for modding. That's pretty short-sighted, but probably a decision by the publisher, M$, and not the developers who were creatively invested.

It might be possible for someone to come up with a way to do some modding, but short of that, the game is only useful as a single player experience that lasts a couple weeks. Compared to the cost of movies it could be argued it is still worth the money, but compared to geriatric games like Half-Life that are still used heavily, it is an expensive flash-in-the-pan.

In terms of multiplayer I don't see much reason to play, other than if you're chatting with a buddy and having a beer. The leveling system eliminates strategy as being a deciding factor in victory, unless the two opponents are maxed out. In that case it means they are probably flying the same ship, and definitely not a freighter. Kind of boring, and unnecessarily so, since they went to the trouble of modelling and animating all those ships.

Yes - in the demo the rhino is not really useful, but as a fledgling trading company with 3-4 buddies running as escorts (blueharvest server, silverfox - it's where we all were last night, and has FF off, nub), it's a BLAST. FL is the only game I've played besides NS that truly encourages and rewards good teamwork.
