<div class="IPBDescription">havin' newbie comms?</div> I consider myself a good 'rine and so-so skulk .......
I also consider myself a decent gorge.......
but I have yet to com and I wanna experience it. The only problem is that I play regularly on servers
with people who are pretty good, and I know they would whine if a newbie comm was in the chair
(I've seen em' do it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> )

a bit more newbie friendly?

Try to play on custom maps such as ns_siege or ns_missilecommand. They are pretty easy to command.
and understand the interface and even have general ideas of how I would wanna com
the only prob is that being a good marine does NOT mean people will appreciate you
if you are a new com......I've seen some pretty good people crapped on cuz they were comming and
were new......yet were good ground players (hell even server regulars)
thats why I'm scared of comming <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
But you should have a strong self-confidence to ignore disruptive players who make a sport of criticizing the commander because he's not going along with their own ideas of commanding. Just ignore them. If you have any good players on the marine team, they usually try to adapt to the tools and orders you give them.
Should you lose the round you've comm'ed, let someone else take the seat (even if you think it wasn't your fault). If the round was won, you'll most likely have the approval of the majority of the team to re-take command in the next round.

Just wait until you get the "omg he won't give me an HMG! EJECT! EJECT!" 30 seconds into the game. It's even worse when they do indeed eject you.
Usually, the other marine player will help you out with what to build, and since there's only 1 other marine, there won't be large amounts of micromanagement/yelling for equipment...
Just remember:
-Join 2-3 player servers
-Say "I'm kinda new to NS and I want to try comming..."
i read the whole manual, every word <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
im getting more experience with comm'ing. i actually had a teammate say to another one "shut the hell up and let the comm command" cuz someone was trying to tell me to give him this, put this here.. etc <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
i get confused and such when i have 3 areas to build/manage and a hellofa lot of marines to supply all at once <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
its tough but i like it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
next thing to do is get good at gorgin and try all the updates..
cloaking sounds awsome, total cloak with level3 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
btw, does level 3 mean you have 3 of that chamber up?
i got yelled at for building a sensory chamber instead of a movement <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
he was like "omg omg, he built a sensory and not a movement, noob, omg. im out of here"
hehe <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
tnx
disclaimer: i personnaly hate locking hives down. It's boring. It can work on a server full of nub aliens but it's not fun for anyone.

Total cloaking was taken out in 1.04. Each level of cloaking determines the speed in which you cloak. One sensory chamber is x amount of seconds, two speeds up the cloaking, and the third is the fastest. You can still be seen, but you're really faint.

Yes. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->tip: dont ever EVER drop a turret factory in base. Go for quick upgrades or get MT, or lock down some hives, or cap like 4 res nodes, but for the love of something that you love DONT EVER DROP A TF in base. unless you have insane res and have 2 hives locked down.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I remember in the early days of the game that the TF was the most important thing to build. Now everyone hates the tactic.
When you get a chance...comm. I recommend from the start of the server...that's the best experince...your not trying to find what' wrong or what's where or why in the name of god the last comm did something that way. Get in as soon as you can, let your team know your somewhat new and just start out. Easiest thing to do is try...listen to the marines you know are vet's...take advice if offered...stick to your plan but be ready to change if need be. There is nothing worse then a commander who refuses to alter his master plan at all. Don't be afraid to try new things.
Learn to reward good marines...stick to areas...take certain points, etc. etc. Most important, get in and try. if you've seen a couple good commanders then try and do some of the things they do...get a feel for the set up...but unnderstand that everything depends on your marines and the aliens you face. The best plan can fall apart with poor troops.
Remember...The marines are only as good as thier commander...however the commander is only as good as his marines.
Good luck
Just give them a warning and ask if they mind. Usually the smaller servers are best for this. Not many people like to comm them (or there just isnt a skilled comm)
If you are honest that you are new people will respect that and wont leap at your throat.
Whether you stay as comm if your new or not depends on whos playing... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> i find that some people can be complete idiots and not give anyone a chance to try comming and just start ejecting them.
then, if the game is lost, you a: have someone to blame it on and b: you have taught them a lesson that comming is a lot more difficult than it sounds.
but, tbh, a lan game with bots is only good for learing the basics ie - the interface.
to really get some experience, get on the internet and find a small game.
then, gradually join larger and larger games. if you can, find a server and stick to it. The regulars will soon accept you into their little group, and youll make some friends who can back you up when you are faced with the "n00b Comm" marine. i just hope it never happens to you...
im not a great comm but let me know if this basic plan is good.
:COMM:
-1 infantry portal
-1 armory
-1 arms lab
-mines
-res
-research and upgrades
-eventually tf
that is basically the order i try and follow, but sometimes it varies depending on situation.
is it better to stay at the command center or move it to a hive location?
[EDIT]btw, where can i get bots for this mod? [/EDIT]
or, alternatively... as i just decided to look at the readme for a link to his site: <a href='http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pat.murphy/rcbot' target='_blank'>http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pat.murphy/rcbot</a>
Maybe im not as lazy as i make out to be... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
