Catalyst 3.2 Hang On Esc

Just like the topic says. I recently updated to 3.2 on my 9700 tx. Big boost in performance...but...it hangs if I try to ESC out. I've tried reinstalling 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 and 3.2 is the only one that suffers this. 3.1 stutters for me, as in dips below 60, while 3.0 doesn't have force vsync. 3.2 just hangs if I try to ESC out of the game or from the LOADING screen...

Anyone else experience this?

I have Radeon 9K PRO and catalysts 3.2 work fine in HL. You can try the "Rage3D tweaker" from www.rage3d.com, it works for any radeon card and theres a special rofile for HL, that might solve your problem.

For the v-sync - v-sync means that your card sends new image to monitor when it starts refreshing the screen (you know, the whole monitor is not refreshed whole instantly but in lines from up to down, the monitor refresh rate specifies how many times in second is the monitor refreshed), so that eliminates tearing you might expect when quickly turning horizontally (caused by that new image from graphic card is sent to monitor when its in middle of refreshing, so, say that upper half is the old picture and the lower half is the new picture that is horizontally shifted so it seems strange), but it incurs small performance hit because the card needs to be synchronized with your monitor refresh rate.

I never ran with vsync enabled, always wanted to max my FPS and whatnot but I've recently started using it (with the monitor at 85hz) and I feel silly for not having done so before.

Image quality is noticeably better and its not just a lack of 'tearing' due to out of sync frames but it just looks better overall.

Thats just your feeling, vsync just synchronizes frames, doesnt improves image quality in any way. Maybe you changed some other setting too?

    Win2K Pro
    ATI Radeon 9000 128meg
    Catalyst 3.1

I get a longer pause than normal but my system doesn't freeze.
I did have a problem before where I would get a black screen and CTRL-ALT-DEL came up but the black screen stayed ontop and wouldn't let me see menu to exit HL. All was fixed for me by reinstalling (overwriting) all HL and NS files.
    Corrupt file?
