Hey I just downloaded NS today and have been playing it all night and have been loving it but I don't quite feel like I'm apart of my team mainly because I don't know exactly what to do I have mostly been marine and I know a team wins by completely destroying the opposition but how does the point system work? I know there's 3 hives to a map so maybe like in BF1942 - when you hold the control point (hive) your team gains points? Also a term I have been hearing a lot but don't know what they're talking about is the term 'maintenance'. What do they mean by that? Well thanks for listening and feel free to post any general strategies to get me going
Thanks.

you get resources(res) by having your commander place a resource gatherer on an empty resource node.
the more nides you have, the more res you get.
the hives are the main objectives for the aliens.
with more hives, the aliens can get more upgrades and better evolutions.
the marines have to make sure that the aliens dont get to these hives.
with all 3 hives, the aliens are deadly and 9/10 times they win.
maintenance is most likely a place in the map you were playing. they are probably telling you to go somewhere.
need more help aim me, email, reply or something and ill be glad to help
Get the All Seeing Eye, if you don't have it already.
Pick a map name. Say, Bast, or Eclipse. Filter for servers playing that map, and get on.
The marine start is almost always called "Marine Base" by all the players, regardless of the actual name.
Now then, as you play, learn and remember the names of the three hives. These locations are IMPORTANT to remember the names of. Those names will be used ALL THE TIME. Maintenence is the name for a hive, for example. Get to Maintenence means get to the Hive, often by means of the Phase Gate.
You might also get to pick up the name of a few other key locations. On Hera, there's "Holoroom" which is noteable because it has two resource nodes, "Reception" because it's near Holoroom, and "Processing" because it's a double seige point. On Nancy, you'll hear talk of "Mess Hall" which is a fortifiable position sometimes, and "Mother Interface" which is outside of a hive.
Yeah, it's a lot to take in, but if you work one map at a time, you'll get them all before you know it. NS is an addicting game.
also, it is good if you can find alternative routes incase one is blocked off by a wol (Wall Of Lame - a line of Offence Chambers, maybe stacked, completely blocking a passage way)
it may help if you play as alien and run around as the original life form - a skulk so you get to learn the vent network - useful for suprise attacks and jetpackers
If you dont want to get flamed and booted from your team when you play alien, do not evolve (right click, go up, select life form) into a gorge unless you have permisson from the rest of the team. also, it is best to stay as a skulk until that 2nd hive is up, then you can go fade (you may have seen them)
if you have anymore questions, firstly try a search to see if it has been asked and answered, and if not, post it here and some one will know the answer.
finally,
Welcome to Natural Selection
Try to stay out of his way and mirror his moves. Walk when he does, crouch when he does so as not to attract attention by the marines tap shoes (boy are they noisy).
Also listen closely to what the commander says. If you follow the commanders orders exactly you will quickly learn the tactics reqired for a marine win.
Just keep pluggin and you will learn the ropes. The learning curve isnt as steep as it looks.
Maintenance is the name of one of the three Hive locations on NS_Eclipse. The other two are Computer Core and Eclipse Command.
Check out the overhead views of all the maps, here. It'll give you a feel for getting around each of the (fairly complex) official maps.
Some advice for a new marine:
1) if you have no better idea, stay in base on defense.
2) Teamwork. Marines by themselves are skulk kibble. If you die and respawn, wait in base for at least one other marine unless it's a "haul *** to save X point NOW" situation. Two marines are 4x as dangerous as one.
3) Request Orders. Use your right-mouse-button menu - click your RMB, move to the left (Orders), then up (Request Orders), and click again. Do this *once*. If your commander has something for you to do, hopefully you'll hear "Move to your waypoint, soldier!" and see a blinking blue waypoint appear on your screen. Go there and kill anything you run into. (:
4) Build *or* cover. If your commander drops a structure and someone else starts to build it, cover him. You can even use your RMB menu to tell him you're covering him (I think it's down-left-left, but I might be wrong). If no one else is building, build -- unless you think you're in a hostile situation, in which case wait for backup. Then again, why are you alone? See #2. (;
5) Be efficient and helpful. This is a lump category:
--> You don't need full ammo for both weapons every time. Get two clips for your LMG and one for your pistol, and get moving. You're no good to the commander "humping the armory."
--> Don't ask for weapons unless you're sure the commander's in a non-stressful situation, you have plenty of resources, and you're pretty sure you won't waste those RPs by dying 2 seconds later.
--> If you ask your commander for something, ASK ONCE. Only once. The last thing he needs is someone spamming the "request line" with "I need ammo!" or "HMG/HA plz!" He's got more important things to worry about, like ensuring the safety of the human race. (:
Have fun! Don't get bent out of shape if you lose; personally, I think losing in NS is nearly as fun as winning. (: Take everything as a learning experience, and play as a team. Oh, and thank your commander at the end of the game. If he was great, say "great job." If he wasn't, say "nice try." Getting in the chair takes a lot of guts, and it's not easy.

have fun
Ah yes and maintenance can also be the area down of the marine start, towards vent 3C in ns_hera. Sometimes the dark hallway is also called maintenance.
i think he does his smilies backwards cos he is backwards and it makes him feel at

if you kill yourself (with xenocide or /kill), you loose a frag. that means that the only way to increase your score with xenocide is to kill 2 or more marines with one hit.
damn i learn something new everyday
If skulks DID have welders they'd be invincible, they could just throw it at a marine and watch as their weapon is taken away for the excessivly long welder sequence.
btw the female ninja in tenchu wrath of heavens whips Rikimaru.
guess im not with it anymore
and rik dies in the first one too
