How to name yourself
I have been playing for some time now, and I think it might be helpful for all new players to take a few of my suggestions.
1. If you do not have a mic, please make mention of this in your name.
Examples: [NO-MIC]Bob or Bob{no-mic}
Reason: Teams do well with instant communication. Those with mics can communicate with each other without taking the time to type. When you eventually decide to try out the commander position, the mic is needed even more than usual. The rest of the team needs to know that you have to spend time to type.
2. If you don't have your speakers on, please tell us this.
Examples: [NO-SOUND]Bob or Bob{no-sound}
Reason: Nothing is more frustrating than a player who doesn't know you're yelling at him. If we need to get your attention, we will more than likely communicate through voice communication, only resorting to text when we have lost all hope of your sanity. If you don't have speakers, you could be kicked or banned from servers for lack of teamwork - we think you're ignoring us because you're a lame player, not because you don't have sound. It's best to inform the team of the lack of sound to avoid frustration.
If these suggestions don't work for you, inform the users on the server that you have A. no microphone or B. no sound as soon as you enter the server. It might be a good idea to mention this throughout the game, for all the new players. Don't be annoying about it... just occasionally inform them.
Take these suggestions as just that; suggestions.

ex: ***Not-a-newb***(Skulk)[No-sound]{No-Mic}tseepra{Caged}[Green](Pistol)***Need-Medpack***
But I don't think it is necessary to add [No-Mic] to your name, people will get the point when you don't speak but you type, and I don't know anyone who dosen't have speakers or headphones. And finally instead of yelling at people try telling the politely, you get better results that way.

I dont have a mic and i can still com pretty well. I think that i dont have mic informing is useless. Most of the players in pub doesn't have mic and it would be really annoying, if everyone starts to inform each others about that mic thing.
Those no sound players i have seen few, but they usually inform about that problem.
Nope. He puts [NO-MIC] in front and back of the nickname so you should have this:
***Not-a-newb***[Skulk][No-sound][No-Mic][Caged][Green][Pistol]***Need-Medpack***tseepra---Need-Medpack---{Pistol}{Green}{Caged}{No-Mic}{No-sound}{Skulk}---Not-a-newb---
Have you ever tryed waypoints ?
If you need marine to go trought phase, you can put that wp near it or on top of it, so there will be that "man target at waypoint" thing. If you need someone to stay in base, you can put wp on top of a com chair or other structure, etc...
I have played all C&C games and few other strategy games, so that commander view and that wp system is pretty fumiliour to me.

SIR|John Jack Arthur Williams
and that reached the limit. I'd let you count because I cant be assed to.
Oh yeah, and notice that he said [NO-SOUND]Bob or Bob{no-sound}
now, reread this if you didn't notice...
[NO-SOUND]Bob or Bob{no-sound}

How would they know a waypoint was given to them, if they don't hear the "Proceed to Waypoint" sound? Chances are they will miss the notification (especially if it is behind them).
People having nicks in forms of smileys and such.
I use a mic and find it somewhat anoying to try and adress people who call themselfes =b and so on.
But that might just be me.
As for the mic, no one is required to use a microphone. People know how to type, and if they want to, let them. They don't have to announce if they don't have mics or not. That's just dumb.

Over the years I have used:
Mail Man
Zoophagous
Disney Land (current NS nick)
The Canadian
Which is Which
The White Rabbit
just use something people can recognise not gjfdnfrliuhf or 194809382197, because that just sucks

I hope you realise that most players do not play with mic so really the people WITH mic should be the ones advertising, they are the minority after all.
Secondly I'm not sure what the exact percentage is, but I'd say the majority of players are still on 56k dial-up and wouldn't be stupid enough to enable voice to further cripple their connection.
I agree that if everyone had broadband and a mic it would make a fantastic game, but that aint the case now is it?

I think there's a tag you stick on down under if you're clanless and seeming employment. HFH or something (Heroes For Hire). I don't remember exactly.
Anyway, I think the most important naming convention you can have is for your name to be either easy to say, or easy to shorten into something easy to say. My name for example is "Calantus" which is easy to say, but most shorten it to "Cal" (though I hardly ever use Calantus anymore other than on forums and email). My CS name shortens to "Cor", very easy to say. They can quickly look at the name and say "Right, I'll just say Cor and he'll know", and I do.
Stay away from random symbols/letters/numbers, faces (like "{>_<}", even though that is a pretty cool name when you're getting owned), or really hard to cipher 1 3 3 7 speak. Make it easy to read, type and say so that your team can communicate better.
