I just installed Win2kpro last night. It's quite nice, and the net speed is AMAZING - I got 600k/sec from an internet site last night!!
However, since installing it, my Quicktime has gone wonky. I upgraded to the latest version, and tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but the problem remains. Basically, the in-browser plugin works fine, but when I try to play a file on my hard drive I get this error message, and Quicktime stops responding. Pressing any of the 3 buttons instantly gives me the same error message again.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Another thing you can also do is check the events log to see what error code it may have generated and do a search on the microsoft knowledge base. Be sure to look at the time so you can match the entry.
Also be sure to have the latest certified drivers.
Good luck.

To the fix:
1. Uninstall Quicktime
2. Run Regedit (start | run | 'regedit')
3. In Regedit, click on 'My Computer' to highlight it.
4. Hit F3 button, then type in 'commercial.mov" and hit 'find next'.
5. Wherever Regedit search finds that reference (likely only 1 spot, but hit F3 unitil it says 'not found'), delete the value (of Indiana jones etc...). You can make a backup of the key if you're being prudent by selecting 'File | Export' and making a backup reg file of the area you are deleting.
When done, reboot, reinstall QT, report back here.
If you do not find any reference to that movie, report back here.
If doing this does not work, report back here.
And stop installing Win2000 over your old nasty Win9X OS. If you need steps on how to backup your data, install Win2k clean, and tune it all up, reference <a href='http://www.readyroom.org/perfgde_1.html' target='_blank'>the readyroom.org tuning guide</a> and myself. Then report back here.
Og og og!

Hmm. So I did all that, and ended up with the same error. However, I have discovered that if I click Cancel about 6 times, the error message goes away, and the player is fine - movie works and everything. /: Still broken, but not unusable... bleh.
Try opening regedit and going to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and removing the key or string for qttask.exe.
As Monse said, I *highly* reccomend backup up any key before deleting it.

you can remove it from registry, as mentioned above or you can try this:
You don't have to disable QuickTime or remove the QuickTime systray icon to clear up the "qttask.exe" error that complains about "No disk in drive. Please insert disk."
This error occurs when you have used QuickTime to view a video file that you had stored on a removable disk, such as a CR-ROM, that is no longer in place. ... Like many other applications, the QuickTime viewer keeps track of your last few most recently viewed files. If one of those recently viewed files was on a removable drive, QT barfs when it starts up at boot time and can't find the file.
The Fix: Fire up QuickTime (double click on the icon in your systray); Select "File > OpenRecent > ClearMenu". This will clear the most recently viewed files and eliminate the boot-time error message without requiring you to uninstall QT or remove the icon from your systray.
edit: win2kpro ownz all BTW
/me now awaits Coil's explanation of why he is using win2k upgraded over Win9x instead of setting it up properly... with a big wet noodle in his hand, prepared for lashing.
I, too, am using (a fresh install of) Win2k. Since that system tray icon is useless, I just disabled it. Simple enough -- go to QuickTime in the control panel, choose "Browser Plug-In" from the drop-down menu, uncheck the last checkbox, done.
While you're at it, if you feel like messing with any of QT's file associations, the button is called "MIME Settings" and is right below.
Personally, I like QT a lot better than most media players. For instance, I absolutely refuse to have RealPlayer on my system, EVER. Horrid, horrid piece of software.
As for not going with a fresh install........ I just couldn't bring myself to having to reinstall all of my software... especially considering some of those reinstallations would be... tricky. *cough* I *cough* lost the original discs *cough* to some of my software. ^^
*shivers uncontrolably*
must think happy thoughts

::hands coil a bandage to patch up the hole MonsE left in his az::
Hence, Quicktime is bad. You heard me. Bad.
/cut to: shot of MonsE running in super slow-motion out of his apartment, dragging his comely girlfriend along in a tattered neglige, with a determined look on his face, then leaping just as the place explodes in a huge orange fireball.
That's what I'm trying to avoid.
Handling them is easy, really - just threaten them with a magnet until they let all file associations drop, and wear long sleeved stuff to hide the scars.
then again mplayer will play em both ;D (I am rather sure this is simply b/c they have not been caught yet)
personaly here is my go down on movie stuff:
<a href='http://www.twins-software.com/' target='_blank'>Twins Video Player</a>
its free, minamilitic (I like small UI) and is VERY good at ripping its files back from those other players when ever they manage to get their grubby little paws on em
also I watch AMVs instead of listening to music, it has a very nice random play list function (It is really random, it dosn't keep track of the last song played ;D so you periodicly get the samve vid 2 times in a row ;D)
I don't like whimp, its to fn bubbly (simply put I don't like the UI)
Real? spawn of satan, especialy when people insist on encoding stuff in it ("but the files are so small" "yes, thats b/c the quality blows dead bears")
QT? worse then real for one reason...
YOU CAN'T GO FULL SCREEN!!!!!!!
It took me the longest time to figgure out how to get full screen mode....
buy it
yup, even if you OWN A MAC it dosn't always come with the full version of QT (I have some mac friends)
That's nothing though. Windows stopped offering free full versions of their Media Player after version 6. They don't offer a full version of Windows Media player 9 ANYWHERE. They neglected to include two important system files - stability.dll and goodinterface.dll. However, I did notice they had too many resources.cfg files running at the same time, lagging the computer down to a grinding halt.
But that's the good ol' Media Player, isn't it?
/sarcasm
however atleast with WMP one of the 'features' you get with the full version is NOT the ability to go full screen, it is such a crack head idea.
Well lets see, we have to have some features we hold beck so that people will buy the full version... Oh I know lets make it basicaly ussels and not give them the ability to use full screen mode. Yah thats a great Idea!
I second that.... nothing but hassle.
I used it once many moons ago to watch the "new" Metroid Prime
footage from E3 and then removed it.
