I've got to say that this limit is beyond lame! I'm not even 40% done my map and I'm already at 3.97mb using only 48 textures. I've even had to replace many textures to bring it down to that! If I do this anymore I might as well paint the whole damn map one texture! This is really **** because I've just begun the first hive...
Texture use is key to a map, as far as eye candy goes anyway... I'm wondering why NS has this limit on texture memory to begin with? I was running around my map just fine when I was well over 4.5mb (before I decided to check). I don't have the best system in the world either. PIII 800, 512ram, 32 meg vid card(TNT2 RIVA Model 64). Hell, my vid card is over two years old!
I also don't feel that 48 textures is that much. In fact, I'd like to see more maps with more texture use. It gets rather boring seeing the same textures over, and over... Reminds me of cartoon backgrounds...

I've read that this limit 'might' be increased... When and to what limit?

Where are you looking at the texture memory readout? The one in-editor is about twice what the actual usage is. Only trust what CSG reports.
As far as texture use being key to a map, you make it sound like more textures is better. Some studios have fired level designers based on who requests the most textures and who most effectively makes use of what they have - those making the extra requests being those who get fired. Texturing is critical, yes, but more textures != quality.
Regarding the limit itself, I think it was Day of Defeat that made a release with maps in the 7-8 meg texture memory range. I could be mistaken on the exact mod, but the online performance on these maps was horrible. Remember, Half-Life was built under a limit of 2 megs texture memory per bsp and only Zoner's tools have expanded this. We're already beyond design specs.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH SNAP!
As for the CSG... Texture usage is at 1.79 mb (of 4.00 mb MAX)
WHEW! What a difference! Damn VHE! lol
