Phantom Sporecloud

It only just happened an hour ago. I was playing alien on ns_nothing and we went on to take all three hives thrash the marines. When the next game started, I decided to go marines for a change. We quickly relocated to cargo, but I bravely sat in spawn with a buddy helping to defend the RT in there. He was sitting across the room near the unworkable lifts, out of sight from me. I was sitting near the comm chair, just below the railing.

And then it happened.

Out of nowhere, a sporecloud came into existence, and I started taking damage. Normally, this would shock me. But considering this was a new game entirely, hive one, with no lerks on the map...

Has anyone else encountered the Phantom Sporecloud or other phantom phenomena? Perhaps ghosts haunt the code of NS and Flayra is using the undead to program for him <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Anyway, I'm just finsihing this with, that was darned wierd...

    I've heard of sporeclouds persisting INTO the next game (IE gas everywhere during final base assault, when next game starts on same map all the gas is still there), but sporeclouds spontaneously generating several minutes into the game is news to me.

    hehehe, yeah ive encountered the phantom spore cloud once. Was on ns_hera about 3 minutes into the game. A spore cloud popped up out of nowhere. They had only one hive, and sv_cheats was 0.

    Strikes quite a big panic into the marines :P

    Couldnt have been graphics overload, damage was taken to both health and armor, and in HL on a Geforce 2?

    It has happened to me before, a few minutes into the game, not just at the very moment we spawn. Seems to be a bug of somesort.

    Actually, I just had this happen last night on Ns_nancy. Game had ended with us getting SLAUGHTERED. We started up a new game, about...I'd say, 30-40 seconds into the game, a sporecloud goes off, and myself and everyone else in base who was building at the moment began to take damage. Everyone was like "wth!?!" It was very odd. My first encounter with it.

    Haven't actually seen them myself, but I've seen people get banned for 'hacking' when one pops up and kills off a few Marines.. and the Admins won't listen to those on the server trying to explain the bug.

    I've encountered the "Phantom Sporecloud". I never took damage, though. It was probably because I was a few feet away from it.

    listen to this. a sporecloud went off in siege at the top of the fort that is in front of the door that the aliens come from when the door was still closed!!!

    ive expeirenced phantom spores 3 times on differend maps.
    They never did damage.

    Phantom effects happen, I've seen the spores one before, phantom phasegate effects, it usually has to do with something partical based.

    My favourite has to be the dummy OT tho. A buch of us were just screwing around on Bast playing as gorge, I'd built some OT's in the hive. Marine comes running in, and the OT's don't fire. Both of us are wth? and just look at the tower. Then he just dies. It seems the code for the OT didn't kick in or something right way, then went of with a vengance when it did. It was rather amusing regardless <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I've not seen a phantom spore cloud, but i have seen other phantom effects (both yesterday).

    On Hera there was a bug while I was a fade after we had cleared out the third hive. Every time i would exit a hive location a siege blast would go off somewhere near the cieling. There were no structures around, and when there were they didn't take damage. I also never took damage no matter how close I was.

    The other one was on Tanith. I was playing Kharaa for several rounds in a row. Two of those rounds we started in Satellite Communications Hive. As soon as the last skulk ran out of the hive location on the initial rush, an Onos roar sounded. It occasionally happened near the same location (Chemical Transport?) other times during the game. Then it happened a lot of times once we got Onos <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> .

    It's either an exploit or a bug where left over spores from the last game are continuing to explode. Last time I saw it pop up a few minutes into the game I ran around in it until it killed me to see who it was and I'm 100% sure the bloke wasn't a lerk at the end of the last game. He was however on the aliens team when this was happeneing butif he was a lerk of not I couldn't find out, none would say on the aliens team.

    Happened to me 3 times, I know one of them was on hera, can't remember the other maps that it happened on. I do know it was a while ago, like the end of 1.3 or beginning of 1.4.

    All that happened was the cloud appeared and did damage. But the weird thing was that right as a guy joined his model was lerk them quickly flipped to marine. I checked him out and was just a guy who played aliens last round.

    Maybe that pregame just as you join you keep your alien abilities for 1 sec and you press fire and the server registers it in that 1/10 of a sec that your alien before you flip to marines?

    And no there was no commader mode bug used in any of the games.

    i've seen, and been damaged by, starting spore clouds several times, most commonly occured on nancy.

    usually happens after the onii and lerks are slaughtering us from the round before.

    Anyways, I beleive the last time this was discussed someone said it had to do with lerks spamming spores. The spores had to wait for the others to go away, and by the time they got their chance, a new round had begun. I'm not sure if this is true or not though.

    Oh, I've seen many similar events. An alien spawning as Onos at the beginning of the game was one of the better ones (there are few things that can freak out a marine team like that <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ).

    Also, sometimes sentry turrets have a permanent muzzle flash even if there are no enemies, makes them look like the sieges.

    Another strange one: own weapons that do not appear. Use umbra, and it does work, but can't see it. Same with spores, acid rocket, lerk spikes, no visible weapon effect. The effect generally goes away after another evolution or upgrade.

    ive seen this a lot, usually in the last release candidate though, not since the patch was released have i seen this again.
