I -still- say it should be a healing gun. I can even describe it so that it fits within the NS universe.
They have nano-technology. That much we know from the marine backstory.
The healing gun would transmit healing nanites along a particle beam to the target marine, where the nanites would enter the body through natural pores, microscopic cuts, and other natural holes in the skin that exist. (These are the same places that allow contact poisons to work, and since nanites are by definition microscopic, usually smaller than a living cell, it would totally make sense.)
The commander kind of needs the ability to control who gets healed though, its a really nice positive reinforcement. If a player got ahold of the healing gun, him and a lame buddy could reak havoc on the marine team screwing over there teamwork and strategy. Its too big of a risk with not enough return i think. Besides I just want to play the game already! lol
If everybody does have access to a healing gun, then the commander could loose control. As much as I dont like having to stock the medics, it does happen in real life, and is the commander's fault should the proper people not recieve the proper equipment. In some other RTSs, the medic class has unlimited medical resources, but zero offence or defencive capabilities (besides armor.) In others, they have a limited amount that they can heal, and very basic weaponry. Having to keep the medic stocked the same way you would have to keep your marines stocked with ammo is not a bad idea, IMO I dont think its a good one either But having a commander assigned medic person could prevent the scenario that Trane mentioned in the previous post if the aformentioned medic was kept on a leash.
But then again, how many marines (and hypothetical medics) would live long enough to have to be kept on any kind of limited supply leash in the first place?
why not make a heal building. so when u get close u get healed.then there would the lame thing dissaper and u could make so the commander can choose who can heal him self there and he can choose were to build it. but the healing gun got other possibilltys that the "hospital" dont.
But theres always the possibility that the commander gives it to someone he shouldn't have and thats when he loses control. So i guess if you guys dont mind risk losing one of the biggest returns the commander can give, hey, go for it. Personally id rather have complete control, no matter how tedious.

And how come NS marines can advanced nanite-producing guns if they don't have laser weapons and such, if they get these medguns? Making nanites isn't something you would be making outside of a lab if you didn't have really advanced technology. If I had to choose between medgun and spray, I would choose the spray for realism.
Lots of cool ideas whizzing around here. I've thought a lot about a medic role in NS, and while I really want one now, I think this is something that will have to wait until the next version. I think a medic role fits perfectly in NS, but it requires artwork and a fair amount of thought. This will probably show up in the future, but probably not for v1.0.
I like the idea of a medic, haveing only afew allowed on each team, but i do wonder how, if they will get one, the aliens will use medics, i cannot see a alien getting a health pack, hows this for a idea..
the marines just get run-of-the-mill medics, but the aliens dont, why can heal some, like 1/4 of there health by eating the remains of dead marnies, i think thats very alien-like.
and this would give the marnies anouther good reason not to charge out alone, since you would be just picked off by 2 or 3 aliens then eaten.
what do you think? hope u consider something like it for later releasees.
oh and Flayra, 1st time i have seena post of yours, so i got to say weldone, this mod looks by the far the best im waiting for the releese, i am waiting for about 50 lol
Actually, I think I've heard natural regen for aliens, so eating corpses, which is basically vampiric in the sense and also sounds along the gory lines that NS doesn't want, probably wouldn't go. It's very hard to eat something then suddenly a big gaping gash closes, although you may feel better cause your stomach isn't empty, bu t that won't do much more than 1 health point I'm thinking, so would be useless. Forget the spray, that is whuss stuff . It's like the no hurt alcohol over the regular alcohol, nothing different in the end, probably costs more, but nothing different except for that second to a child when he gets hurt. Maybe with amed gun sorta thing, because I don't see how well spraying someone with a liquid (It's obviously a liquid when it touches, a gas is just an expanded liquid and shooting freeze dried bits of medical supplies at people will get them ###### rather than well) really would do, lots of loops to follow, that inject o' gun thing you could change out the needle. It's a much more realistic thing, and if people are worried about a big shared needle craze, then make em discharge the serum thing each time to reload another, which would be needle and all.
I think adding the med-gun to a later release of NS after 1.0 is made public is a good idea.
I like the idea of having a fellow marine patch me up, or I having to do the same to a marine in need. Why should the commander be distracted by a squad of marines whining and begging him/her to phase in some med packs, when he/she needs to devote their attention to upgrading, rebuilding, and organizing. I could really see a huge flood of people constantly bugging the commander to "drop me some %$^$% health you !#@$!" once NS is made public. Giving a willing marine the med-gun to take the task of keeping the other marines alive just makes sense.
The marines are the ones who will always be closest to the action and injured (well besides the overhead view the commander will have, but in reality he is in a room sitting at a console somewhere in the map).
In today's military you don't see commanders and generals flying overhead in choppers personally droping boxes attached to parachutes to the wounded. They leave that task to the people they assigned to do it. Just like the marine(s) with the wielder are in charge of wielding and the marine(s) with the HMG or shotgun are in charge of killing
Anyhow it would be great to see a med-gun type thing in another release of NS after 1.0 is finished.
[edit-] this is my second attempt at writing this, but when I clicked the preview button for the first time I wrote it (which was a lot more interesting and smart) it mysteriously vanished and gave me a blank text box, so I had to write my thoughts all over again.
[second edit-] The commander could also keep the ability to phase in health packs along with giving the med-gun/hypo spray/nano tech beam to a marine. Just have the med pack(S) at a very limited number.
I can actually see how you can create a spray and have it healover a superficial wound, kinda like a spray-on arifical scab. Creative genetic enginerring of microbes (virii or bacteria) coupled with some interesting pharmaceuticals could pull off a med spray for smaller and less threatening wounds. And as for deeper wounds, "Instant Flesh Packs". Baiscally bondo for human bodyparts. I do beleve that stem cells can be used to create a celluar patch for damaged parts in that the stem cells can mimic the functions of other cells. Imagine a gel made up of these cells, with other agents (biological and technological) to create a temporary patch for deeper musculature wounds so the marine can recover the use of a limb. If such a product could be created in real life, it would definatly not be a permanent fix. But hey, my solution is just one of thousands that could possibly be used. Just remember to K.I.S.S.
Besides why worry about whether or not the damage to the marine can or cant be healed with a spray or intesive virtual surgury? Health in NS seems to be dealt with like other mods via a health percentage. Some people may not like the insta-recovery approach, but sometimes it has to be done that way to keep the game playable. How many action games have you spend the time and perform surgery on yourself you regain health? A close range "Omniheal Hypospray" approach would work just fine in this scenario IMO. And if the med gun can be given to people like more advanced weaponry can, thats almost the same thing as classes in that your focusing your marines fuction in the group toward a specific action, like a welder and medic, in addition to light and heavy gunners. The only difference I see ATM to having this and actuall classes, is character appearance.
Besides, with the relation to the apparent technology level in this game, practical nanotechnology applications could be a viable possiblity. How else could you explain sentry turrets coming out of nothingness*, 'cause nanites carried by the marines build them using raw materials phased in by the commander But if the commander can phase in medpaks, why cant he phaze in sentry turrets as well?

Then again, we are arguing over the same thing. Either way, we like marines healing marines!
