Quick Milkshape-related Question

While looking for Starcraft concept shots of non-armor marines for another thread, I stumbled across this rather spiffy-looking C-20 from SC:Ghost (attached picture) that would make a very nice LMG. However, since I only have MS3D and have never made a weapon model before, I have a long-winded question:

Is it possible to "cut" primitives with one another (e.g. use a cylinder to cut a hole through a box) with MS3D? I can't see the option around anywhere, and if I'm to make the barrel (and other parts) as snazzy as is possible I'll need to do that. Otherwise I'll just have to make what I can with Milkshape then pass the model on to someone with, say, Max to finish it off.

    i think mcnoob has already finished the model for this gun. Check previous thread. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    as for your question, i'm not really sure.

    Ah, excellent. Saves me a bit of work, though I can't see a mrel thread for it anywhere. I'll have to harass MCN00B for it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    However, I'd still be interested to know if Milkshape can cut items like that if anyone can help.

    (edit: actually, I've just noticed his C-20 clocks in at around 5000 polies, which is going to all but kill HL. Maybe I should have a go myself after all.)

    Nope. No carving feature. Make your shapes vertex by vertex.

    I believe it's the extrude tool. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Not exactly. Extrude takes a face and makes it 3d. This is done by duplicating that face, then creating the faces between them. Though, that does give me an idea. If you can subdivide your faces, and sort of move them into the circles you want, you might be able to extrude to make the depressions.

    I have no real experience with extrude, but someone told me they made the cargo area on their helicopter model with the extrude tool.

    Well yeah!
    You just select the faces of a window of the left side, and instead of extruding them outwards, you INTRUDE them (go THROUGH the model) all the way to the right side. Then you delete the faces, and weld the vertex together!

    Voila!
    Instant hole! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Stop stealing my brilliant ideas, silly head. ;P

    I didn't see you jumping to offer your input before I figured it out! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    milkshape does NOT support boolean fuctions yet.

    Wouldn't it be nice if modelling programs were written in plain english?

    I mean "Boolean Operations"..WTH? Took me half an hour to realise they meant "carve, sorta like the carve button in Hammer"..

    "Specularity Properties", oh, I see, you mean "How shiny do ya want it?"

    Similarly, I'd have understood the whole "UV Texturemaps" a lot sooner if it had said "skins y'know.."

    /stops moaning
