Reactor And Holoroom

tempting but costly
I have seen far too many games where a couple of marines area able to secure a hive early on. i dont mean by reloaction either. All they need is a TF and a few well placed turrets and the slulks dont stand a chance. But instead of securing the hive, the rest of the team and the commander seems to be obsessed with taking the double rt holoroom on NS_hera and the reactor room on that map with the waste handling and satcom hive.

Both these rooms are huge and have multiple ways to get in. Holoroom has six ways in and out and reactor has 4. This includes vent access where turrets have trouble shooting. Marine teams waste well over a 100 res a round trying to secure these rooms. They usualy end up placing several PG, TF, RT etc as the first ones are destroyed by an endless waves of skulks. This not only wastes precious res. but time as well.

meanwhile a few marines are at the hive or hives in some cases calling for a simple TF trying to hold the them.

90% of hives have a rt in the same room. One captured Hive and its resource tower is far better then a 100+ wasted reosurces and time on an objective you will probablay not get.

If someone has metioned this before, my apolgies ( my forum search results in "page cannot be displayed")

Somehow that is a very familiar situation

Cargo is a much better bet on tanith: you can control its res and fusion's with a single TF, and have great access to acidic proccessing and sat comm. Tanith is a great map for marines but RR should be avoided generally - I agree. (not if aliens start in fusion though).

Hera is just broken ATM - insane pings, massive player dropout if a change map vote fails, and a double siege point (no map should have these). Open up cargo door and it just becomes worse for the aliens...

Its somewhat of a strategic point tho. Once out of semi desperation from skulk rushes owning my team, i relocated to holoroom, dropped a welder, closed off the two vents, and the door. the mined up the enterances to processing. After doing that we managed to hold off most of the rushes, dropped the two res towers, built up a nice little turret defense for the hallways leading in. Kept all the buildings up on the ledges so they were mainly gaurded from lerks, and possibly fades. But they never got a chance to get that far. we took both hives near us, and proceeded to win. Perhaps it was just luck, but it did seem like a pretty good move in the end.

Usually When i play Hera and no one is comm.. I tell all marines to go to holoroom. And relocate there! Thats 2 rezz's + one in hera ent. Thats a smart choice. Having 3 Rts. Is enough to gear up and tech up with me. Just mine up Hera ent and then start the away!

it's much safer to just build your base in cargo storage in hera, because w/ welding you can seal it off, except for 2 entrances, and you can get back to the CC easily, and one cal also get created w/ TF placement and secure holoroom, not to menion the res in the room that leads to the two security doors, so thats 1 2 3 4 5 res nodes, two cruical areas, and your close to 2 of the hives

Actually, reactor room has 5 exits and entrances..

If you can hold Cargo and RR on tanith you have 4 res nodes easily defended and have basically cut the map in half as well as having easy access to the two hives you *don't* hold. I like it

If the bugs are in waste I usually go for acidic/chemical as well and end up with 6-8 res nodes, enough for some awesome teching

Ns_hera is (as far as i understand) undergoing some major changes for NS 1.1.

The entity count has been reduced from 700+ to 420 (good thing, reducing lag ).
And a siege on vent from Processing will no longer be possible.

And some more stuff, but I don't remember it, and I'm too lazy to find it.

So: It should (in theory) be possible to see the aliens win on this map, once 1.1 comes out

It really depends what the comm really wants.. If he wants JP/hmg rush, then holding reactor room is obviously a smarter choice.. However, if he decides to go for 2 hive lockdown.. Then hell with reactor room/holo room.

Nevertheless, they should have someone overlooking one of the hives they have secured all the time. After all it's a hive and a res node.

I'm noticing more and more that it is often better to send 2 good marines to refinery and actually go somewhere else. It's fun seeing the kharaa expend all their energy to stop you getting a place you don't want, while leaving your real expansion alone.

It's one of those many places on maps that can draw whole teams. If possible I am happy to tie up most of the alien teams at these locations while I have another couple marines secure the rest of the map. If the aliens want it to bad...I'm happy to divert around these locations and secure other spots. Just depends on a number of factors...Main lesson for commanders..because it's really them that need to know this. Learn to alter your plan in game...don't get to used to doing the same thing no matter what. Learn to be flexible

In referring to the last to posts, thats exactly the idea as long as the comm doesnt forget about the 2 marines in the empty hive and continue to dump $ down the drain elsewhere.

TSA play as one win as one?!?
    WTH?

what happened to this lovely thing called teamwork?

ok that was off-topic, back to topic

personally if you can get a hive locked down and a double res locked down, then TF the kaharra out of it...
damn, bell, must go to class

I do believe it is meant as the team playing as one and winning as one.
