Saw New Cheat

MadjaiMadjai Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2986Members
Hey this is just a warning to players and server admins. This cheat is really easy to spot if he is a skulk and i would think much harder if he was a marine. I dont know how its done, i just know how to spot it.

the cheat is basically super fast attack. its like hearing a skulk that is in range of primal scream, they bite like twice as fast. so its really easy to spot when its an alien using the cheat because you can hear the bite noise faster than normal.

Are you sure he wasn't lagging?
  • NarfNarf Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2609Members
no i've seen it before too. I think it is done by use of a script, but i'm not sure i only saw it once. And everyone else on the server was complaining about it too so it wasn't just my lag or his.

Oh no that's not a cheat. I had something like that some times without doing anything... It seems it's just a bug that happens randomly.
  • Frogg2Frogg2 Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4867Members, Constellation
It could possibly be the bug that has to do with HLgaurd...
  • DervishDervish Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2423Members
Do you mean like, a 1 hive skulk biting twice as fast, or a skulk that actually IS Primal Screamed biting twice as fast? 'Cuz the Scream increases attack speed slightly for all classes...

Well it is a cheat. I saw it on marine. He used knife at double speed and "blinked" from place to another.

Is this that bunnyhopping? He travelled distance like 3 jumps under a second.

I don't know if it is because of old (?) server software or does NS still have some stuff that cheaters can expoit. And no he was not a admin. It was a finnish server and cheater was not finn.

The n00b intollerance of the NS community gets just beaten by its cheat paranoya.

Bunnyhoping is not "Blinking". It is a certain way of jumping that allows you to move faster.

its probally a speed hack, that semi new ogc for NS has this crazy speed hack built into it......

I know what it is... A "friend" of mine uses it! You can very easily spot it if the marine's carrying a pistol... What it is is just a simple bind.. You bind the fire button to the Scroll so like when you scroll down... YOU SHOOT REALLY FAST!! I mean my friend shoot's with the pistol as fast as i shoot with the glock 18 on The Specialists mod... That's FAST!

I've seen it before, usually its very suttle. But I have been killed in 2 chomps with level 2 armor by a Skulk using this hack, and I was FULL health/armor.

Yeah this sounds more like the HLGuard bug than anything else. Although an experienced player can exploit that bug.....

I witnessed this bug today , and got munched badly...
  • MadjaiMadjai Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2986Members
he didnt have this speed bite on all the time. it was like his first 3 or so bites were super quick and then the rest were normal. it looked like he had to stop biting and wait a second to start it up again.
and this guy did get kicked by an admin watching him.

yeah that's the bug with HLGaurd...

while pressing forward while attacking your first few attacks are super quick the rest slow. Easiest to see with biting.

ok but no other skulks did this, it was just the one guy. so does this bug require something other than just pressing forward + attack and HLguard?
  • Frogg2Frogg2 Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4867Members, Constellation
I don't know how to reproduce it with out HLGaurd.

Yes, there is a 'speed-attack' cheat out there, independent of HLGuard. It apparently defaults to short initial bursts with a delay, but the person I was discussing it with demonstrated that there was a way to make it constant, blowing an RT down to a quarter health in the space of three seconds.
Apparently it does not cut down on energy usage though, so while they get all the attacks instantly, they're tapped and cannot attack again until they regen.
Was shown that the same thing works with the Marine Knife, but without the lack of Energy there to cap it, they can buzzsaw away an alien RT by themselves in about four seconds. Also works on pistols and LMGs.

Hopefully Flayra will specifically code against the cheat for v1.1, so we can play honest games, without worrying about those only out to 'win' for themselves.

I saw some thing like that with a fade but it was with his regen. guy was in the middle of sub space with his regen going so fast it took 3 lev3 HMGs to bring him down. I think there is a bug with the games basic timing system.

Pistol script and/or MWheel +attack bind: Allows you to hammer the fire button relatively fast. Only useful for the pistol, which has a very low delay between shots and will not rapid fire when the attack button is held. Does nothing to bite speed.

Bunnyhopping: Jummping again the instant you land to avoid floor friction, combined with air acceleration allows you to increase your movement speed up to 170% of normal. Does nothing to bite speed.

Wallrunning: Quake engine bug that occurs when you strafe against a wall that you are running parralel to, increases movement speed by about 25%. Does nothing to bite speed.

    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Speedhack: very old cheat for half-life that causes all player actions to occur several times faster than normal. You run, jump, fall and fire faster than normal. Can be used to increase firing rate up to 8x normal or more. In recent patches, can only be used for a very short period otherwise it will cause the player to lag out and freeze. A version of this hack is included in OGC, the OGC version can be set to activate the moment you press fire and will give you a speed burst for a short period of time before turning itself to avoid lagging the player. This can cause the behaviour you described, but so can....

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->
Are you sure he wasn't lagging?
    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Lag: when a players connection becomes interupted, and then 'catches up' with the server version of the game, this can cause the player to move several times faster than normal for a short burst to quickly 'catch up' with the server version of events. Looks just about identical to the speed hack, but tends to have more of a 'teleport' effect to it rather than smooth (but very fast) movement.

Buttom line: It could be a speed hack, or it could be lag. There isnt an easy way of determining which. If this player appeared to do this everytime you encountered him, then i would tend for the former. Get a demo.

Another note about the speedhack, this can be used in such a way that it is very difficult to detect. If a player uses an LMG, and stands still while firing, he can use the speed hack to fire half his clip almost instantly. Provided the player is not moving, this is very very difficult to detect. Normally there is no difference in the firing sound which would be the obvious clue. Saying that is probably going to increase the ridiculous cheat accusations even further, but these things need to be said :\

This is a bug, nothing more. It probably can easily be exploited, but it also happens on its own all the time. It happens to me, 4 bites in the time of two, and then the rest normal. Sometimes happens along with lag, but it is actually related to HLGuard. A person that this happens to is not necessarily cheating, I've seen it happen to people with low-end computers 100% of the time, without them realizing it was happening.

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->he didnt have this speed bite on all the time.  it was like his first 3 or so bites were super quick and then the rest were normal.  it looked like he had to stop biting and wait a second to start it up again.

Sure, it feels cheap to get killed in what seems like a single bite, but the person doing it probably isn't doing this on purpose. This has to do with Aim-bot detection on server-side, and will cause some but not all computers to experience this. The more anti-cheat programs the server runs, the more likely this seems to happen.

This is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than the speed hack to fire weapons faster, ie: LMG and HMG. Up to half the clip can be fired in the time of a single bullet. This is done by use of.... well, I won't post it here, but that IS a hack. The pistol firing faster with the mouse wheel is a bug, only because the pistol has nearly no cool-down time, and is unrelated to either of these other instances.

If someone is using a cheat in a blatently obvious way, it's not a big issue. Using a cheat like this is asking for a ban. Find an admin, email an admin, etc. Worry more about the things that are hard to detect, like wall hacks.

If it's the 2x biting bug with hlguard, you'd see lots of players using it. They can't really help using it. It's a bug. Contact an admin and ask them to remove the plugin, and refer them to the forum.

If the server isn't moderated, well, find a new server. Same goes if the admins are the cheaters.

that pistol bind with the scroll wheel can get annoying, becuase who needs a sniper rifle when you can fire 5 super acurate shots in the space of time it takes to shoot one w/ rifle?
but no worries, I'm sure this will be addressed in 1.1

    <i>FAN-***ING-TASTIC!!!</i>

OGC for NS - wooo! Man, it's sad. These people are <i>fellow human beings</i> that dedicate thier lives to screwing other people over... You can't get much more pathetic than that.

Just like hacking "OMG I BORKE TEH WEBSIT!!11 Just think of all the people that must be angry cause of me - this is better than p0rn!!!" And I think it's hilarious how we are forced to talk about it - like its some kind of Natural Disaster... "We have to protect against Tornadoes, Hurricans, Thunderstorms, and Hacking Attacks." These are ****ing people! A$$-hats spending thier freetime solely to make other people miserable.

Let's hear it for the human race - HUzzah!

    *Yes, this ****es me off

It starts out with one or two of thoses loosers using the bloody cheats, then loosers in training say " well ill install em and only use them when i see other cheaters using them".

They sooon loose any skill they had, and have to have cheats on all the time.

Eventually everyone has cheats installed and everyones calling anyone else a cheat.

Its the same with the bunny hoppers and script users and map exploiters. Well its in the game, so its not a cheat.

WTH!!! fools im quite sure that flaya didnt have in mind marines that can utpace a skulk, or fire 30 bullets in the space of time you should only be able to shoot one, or even have some sort of super bite that can take down a res in 4 seconds.
