Skulk Orientation

running rightside up, upsidedown
This might sound nitpicky but I didnt see it mentioned in the 1.1 update post.

When a skulk runs up a wall or across the ceiling they are always right side up. Even the player sees everything right side up as well. It looks as if the skulk is running on an invisible treadmill with a magnet on his back to stick to the ceiling.

Perhaps the NS team thinks that the disorientation of moving upside down would unbalance the game?
This is done with the Alien players in AvP2 with no complaints.

Even though I have a strong feeling that there would be 100s of complaints and objections to changing the players perception to go with his body postition,
so maybe they could make the model run up the walls and apear upside down to everyone else but the actual player would still see things right side up?

What do you guys think?

I think you should read the news posts for 1.1 a little more carefully:

Read the 1.1 info. The skulk will rotate to match the surface it is standing on in the next patch. End of thread

Who says the skulks don't have tiny claw-line hairs on their backs which dig into the walls? Or, if the model gets inverted but not the first-person view, the ability to invert their vision?

I'm pretty sure Flayra posted somewhere (don't take my word for this) and said that lerk-cling won't be implemented yet.

Hey, I'm not sure kharaa even have organs of that type, so let's not worry about their "orientation".

Actually if you're upside down for a longer period of time you're vision will change so that you're seeing things the "right" way. We might see some screenshots soon since playtesting has apparently started. Regis from Chaos Films is also making a NS 1.1 teaser movie. Can't wait.

    Huh?

Are you saying that if a person physically stands on their head (or something like that) their vision will invert, or are you saying that if you play ns, go skulk, and hang on the roof for a while your vision will invert?

No, your brain gets used to seeing things upside down and adapts. They've done tests on subjects, making them wear 'upside down' goggles, eventually, they got used to doing everything inverted, ie, moving left to go right etc.

It'll be funny to see skulks try and jump while they are standing on the ceiling. It would be cool if they could spring-off the ceiling.

I'm pretty sure that he's saying perception is based on what you percieve. I think he is implying that if you are hanging upside down long enough your vision will invert mentally so you are percieving the upside down world as right side up. I'm not sure of this effect myself but that seems to be what he is saying.

This "skulk-model rotating to face the surface it's standing on" thing is going to be fun for folks in vents. Can you picture the skulks now? zooming thru vents rotating their little hearts out? Maybe just standing in place rotating like a rotissery? heeheehee

If you paid attention to some of the earilier material.

View rotation is very capable of being done... BUT there is a VERY large percetage of the population that this makes very sick, and it's disorienting.

Flaya is one of them. So will the view rotation ever be standard prob NO.

Will view rotation be an option, maybe but I think flaya should just be selfish and say, "Its my mod, and I don't want to look at it and get sick, so deal".

I don't think so. NS was made by a whole team. Flayra is the leader but I think he should listen to the others. If he would be so selfish NS would certainly be dead right now.

Optional invert is pretty kewl , love that stuff from AvP.

But what if like errorr404 says when he tries to jump of the ceilings, so then he falls but how will the screen rotate back then? will it be like frame1=invert frame2=normal, or will ur view really turn around?

    Someone know that?

There are a couple of small videos of what the aliens see in AvP2 when they're upside down, if anybody is interested!
