Almost had me a heart-attack tonight!
1:20AM - Decide to open up Hammer and implement a now forgotten idea.
1:21AM - Hammer is loaded, click on "File", go to the recently-opened files section...
1:22AM - After clicking on "File" numerous times, my map still does not appear...
Keyboard gets a little tense...
1:27AM - Searching frantically through my harddrive in all the places it could be...
1:30AM - Discover my "backup" copy is a copy of the BSP instead of the rmf...
My keyboard pees itself with nervousness...
No sign of my map... after searching all my usual mapping directories...
1:35AM - Search again... a few times... Weird twitch develops...
Keyboard attempts to hide under desk...
1:37AM - Deep breaths... possible to reverse engineer the BSP...
Realize a lot of work may have been lost eitherway...
1:40AM - Staring at screen...
Keyboard hides behind "ye old bashing keyboard", but realizes not enough of
is left to bash anymore... it's on the block now...
1:42AM - Well... maybe I should fix the old search function?
1:45AM - After fixing the "search" (busted due to my removing of useless crap in MSconfig... 99.99% of the time it's the way I like it) I discover...
Drum roll please...
The stupid thing was in my Counter-Strike maps directory the whole time.
Why it disappeared off of Hammer's list is WAY BEYOND me. (Why it's in the cstrike directory is an even better question.) I had been working on it in the afternoon. Aye Carumba. I am thinking, losing something in 30gigs of files is not cool. This summer, the ol'girl is getting a reformat. But the lesson learned here, BACKUPS ARE THE COOL THING TO DO! I mean, my map is just starting to show potential (in my eye) and oi...
Funny thing is, this afternoon I was thinking I should update my "backup" because I had made alot of progress since I last backed up but neglected to do so. Too close.
Ah well, I may as well throw up a screen now. Ns_Polaris will be it's name.
This is the marine start. I've only got this, two rooms, one hive all half done, and another hive just started. And a couple of hallways.
I am aware of the lighting and textures. I am aiming to have this finished in 5 or so months, depending on how busy my summer is, so it is a ways off yet. When I am closer to completion, I'll submit more pics for nitpick... errr... suggestions then!

Like the screenies
the desk looks a bit incongruous....
And the ramp also doesn't fit.. not to mention the desk..
Back up your files!
In my ns map NS_DEMOCLES, i do backups of every single build/version at each major modification i do, and name it "ns_democlesBAK240303.rmf". This ensures that ever major modification i do, i can go back with no hassle and the minimum of lost stuff.
A disturbing trend these days of not seeing mapping backup their stuff... and most recently, NS_NANCY's source files was lost as well! ugh.... Such a high potential map...
Spank up the walls (Paintings, yay), and add some pilars or sumthing to the ramp (imagine a HA marine walking over there in RL)
I started over again shortly after that, and now I back up regularly. Best of all, this version is turning out to be many times better than the one I lost.

LOL! I didn't know keyboards could do that?

Heh... I kept my old busted one this time, just so that I can stop breaking my new ones... there is no better way to relieve stress than taking a keyboard (that doesn't work already) and busting it on the ground!
About the desk, it's mostly a place holder for the time being. (Hence ugly blue textures slapped on it.) The final one should have that L-shape though. (I really hate my "monitors" right now) Like I say, I've only gotten started with it. (Damn school is getting in my way!)
[Edit]And about the ramp, I'm also debating in my head. Probably end up with an elevator, or "inside the wall" kind of ramp. We'll see. (Woo just thought of where I could use that particular ramp! Off to hammer I go!)[/edit]
