your forgetting maya PLE, thats free and totally usable for learning how to use maya, its a free dl from the maya site, its also on the unreal tournament 2 disk if you cannot downlaod the 400+meg or whatever the filesize is.
I forget Maya's website, but they do have trial or student versions of it that you can download straight from them. All the renders have a giant "TRIAL VERSION' watermark across them so your screenshots will look like ****, but you can get it for from from them.

If you are looking to obtain a legal copy of Maya, or any other expensive program, see if your school offers courses on how to use the program. Generally only art or technical colleges will have these courses, but some other schools may as well. Usually they offer large discounts for students taking the courses, and sometimes even just students attending the school, though not often.
