Smart market move?
trying to sell an almost 6 year old engine to poor unsuspecting people, is that a good idea? I mean, if people are stupid enough to believe they need different CD keys for CS and DoD, then more power to the marketing machine, but I find it BIZARRE for "public mods" to go retail, and yet remain free.

but what i REALLY want to see is a retail version of NS or something. think of it, a box cover artwork on your favorite MOD in your room where you can see it daily
CS Retail: $30
HL Game Of The Year Eddition: $20
Knowing that you got more content then the other 2 suckers: Priceless
Mastercard can buy most things, for everything else there is Spite.
They can sell it, they can make money off of it And I will still laugh at ANYONE who buys CS or DoD retail when they could have gotten HL, OpFor and all of the mods they could want for less $$
Look, those of you who were around for the release of CS retail will remember a few things:
1) It didn't work they left out some key things (like maps I think) that had to be patched almost instantly
2) there were new bugs that also had to be addresed in said patch
For those of you around now:
Go look at the Tech help for ANY mod out there, you will see that almost ever one has a pinned thread on how t make the game work with CS retail (and it aint always just CHANGE THE BLOODY PATH).
I congratulate any of the companies and the mod teams who manage to sell their mod (and STILL keep it free for us).
I Also Laugh my, wait not suposed to say that, off at those who buy it. You just payed $10 more then me and I got more product, not to mention that the product that you got came FREE with mine
Is there a particular reason y anybody with HL would buy CS or DoD retail? (not the people on 56k's) Is it to simply 'donate' a fund?
As far as gunman goes, I know quite a bit about it since I know the guy who was the head coder (that got him a job at gearbox too). And yeah, the engine was old when it came out, but only 3 years old. Not 5. For what it was, Gunman was pretty good.
I enjoyed Gunman quite a bit. I got a really, really big kick out of the cowboy/civil war-in-space theme it had going, I thought that was really really cool.

Laugh all you want. I own original Half-Life, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Gunman, Counter-Strike, and will own Day of Defeat. I still play the downloadable version of CS when I play, as I will with DoD, but I'll buy it the second it hits shelves. Why?
1) Their work is worth my money
2) I love collecting games as much as I love playing them - boxes, CDs, liner notes, manuals... all of it.
Laugh all you want - just know there's other reasons to buy this sort of thing than the game itself.

You overestimate the engine-level changes made to CZ... There's some changes, yes, but not enough that it'd make the difference between people buying it or not.

This wins the award for the most mind-numbingly closed-minded statement of the thread... While CS was immensely popular prior to going retail, it was the retail release on top of the mod itself that put CS where it is today. Quite a flop for having at least tenfold the active players of any given game at any given time, and often times 50-60% of the online player base at any given moment (meaning equal or greater numbers in comparison to most online action games -combined.) Just because you personally don't like it doesn't mean it was a failure.
KFS didn't you/Don't you have a job with a gaming company mapping for them?
why yes, yes you do (hehe, I know all your secrets, or atleast those that you post here )
see that meens you have money, seeing how as I am hitting around $60 in my bank acount (soon to be less)
I will still be frugal with my spending
but yah, I see where you come from, if I had $$ I probably would have alot more games then I do
In the netherlands u can buy Halflife generation 1 for 16 euros, wich is HL cd+key and CS CD+key and Opforce CD+key, the 2nd generation with blue shift is 22 euros or something...
Now I dont know the difference between euros and $ exactly but I thought they were practicaly the same.
A lot of the old skool DoD people are say they are gonna boycott the purchase of DoD Retail because the team sold out. Elitist BS like this ticks me off. I've got a few problems with VALVe, but the DoD Team have always been firm supporters of the community by and large and when the time comes I'll feel proud handing over my money to these guys.
Alas that a few of the PR, web and a few other people had to be 'fired', but still this is the way the real world works (Watch out MonsE ;o). Long live DoD Retail!!
I would assume that they are not getting royalties from DoD (Though I might be mistacken) instead Activision pays them and Activision gets royalties.
oh, and as for the $20 and $30 those are MSRP, so o/l stores tend to sell them at that (amazon etc) I pulled those numbers directly off of EBGames' webbie
yes, I probably could find HL GotYE for$15 and under (wich is basicaly your generation 1) blue shift for $20 and under (I am guessing it is basicaly the same thing as your generation 2) and CS retail for $25 and under, however $doD will probably be starting at $30 every where
It still is cheaper to but HL Game of the year instead of picking up CS retail (or you could jst buy HL jewlcase from a bargain bin for like 5-10 ;D)
The most I got from one unnamed mapper "It was enough to pay for my brand new computer"
Well, as a 56ker myself, I can say that it's no big deal really to leave a mod DLing overnight, or somesuch. That's how I got CS, DoD, and NS. Besides, it's easy enough to just grab a copy of the modsfrom a coverdisc if you can't be bothered with the download.
As for whether I'll buy DoD or not, it all comes down to what comes with it (not just game content, but manuals and such too), not to mention if it ever gets a UK release, since I think the only UK version of CS retail is packaged with HL Generations.
So that's why I won't buy DoD. If the only reason I would buy DoD is to help out the staff that was rude to me, I won't bother.
However, if the game is good enough, and I can legally get it for free, I'll go for it.
