Most NS maps are too complex to be de-compiled. Certainly all the offical ones are (so i'm told). The standard use of the NULL texture and now opt_plns makes it even more unlikely that NS maps can be de-compiled. If you use Quark you can see how the enttites have been set up though.

I dont need the entities. I want to see the style in WC.
But you wont give me the .map if I?d ask you wouldnt you? Have you got ICQ Crome? Maybe I could talk a little faster.

No I don't have ICQ. Do you have an IRC client? There is an ns mapping channel on the gamesnet network were we can talk.

    mIRC is popular <a href='http://www.mirc.com/get.html' target='_blank'>http://www.mirc.com/get.html</a>

and the channel is called #nsmapping
  • QBManQBMan Join Date: 2003-04-09 Member: 15339Members
Which server to connect? I dont really know about IRQ.
  • ChromeAngelChromeAngel Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 14Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
GamesNet and it's IRC not IRQ. IRQ is something completely different.

I'm no mIRC expert myself, have you filled in the detail in the connect window?

You might want to check the identd details too (it's in the tree under connect)

Eek, IRC beginner trouble. If you hit up <a href='http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22how+do+I%22+mirc' target='_blank'>www.google.com</a> you'll find a million of those, each detailing exactly how to do things. Hey, mirc.com itself has one if memory serves.

Put some effort into solving things yourself is what I always say <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

What's the trouble? I'm always using QuArk and never had problems viewing bsps. I even think that QuArK is particulary bad for browsing entities. There are no search functions for them working in the bsp-viewer. Only trouble is some textures will be out of place. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> Common, QuArK rules!

    G thx for the idea!

there are 2 ways i can think of to stop people decompiling your maps.
1: build some really complex geometry in the map somewhere.
    2: wadinclude the wads.

im unsure over which method the ns team used.

You can extract .wads easily from .bsp files.

I've successully decompiled ns_eclipse, but only as a reference for some of the infestation.
But i hate basing my maps on other people's maps. My style is my own, thank you. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

both... these maps are really razy, and most of them have a little cookie somewhere, credits, props, the "secret room" all have textures not in the wad...

Winbsp, has it's problems... i've NEVER got winbsp to work EVER... and i don't think it's the map (i tried decompiling my own map... and still got errors)

the best thing to do is to gain a "wireframe" or a brush" view... IN YOUR HEAD while your playing, so you can see what brushed could have possibly gone where... what it takes to create that shaped brush, and how it's connected to tha map and it's position. i know that when i mapped for a while, i gained this view when i was loking at the NS maps i was like " psshh, no problems" and then i started to make one... without the carve and hollow tools, i am crippled, only because i don't plan anything...

Tips for making a NS map:
    plan
    plan
    study current and in-development maps...

those 3 steps will do you more good than WINbsp would have.

winbsp is a useful tool, i used to use it all the time when i first started mapping. not to steal other peoples maps but merely to see how various undocumented entitys related to each other. winbsp decompiled maps only contain surface information, and the brushwork is fractured beyond repair so is pretty useless for stealing maps anyway.

True, but then again very useful to see how the damn thing works.
