You won't believe this, it's impossible
Alright, I found a server host that gave me a really good deal, but when they put up my test server, they forgot to load up the patch, so it was 1.0. We wanted to test it on hera so he tossed it on hera, we got in, and it was pretty laggy, BUT all pings were under 100 except mine because I was downloading something at 109k/sec. We were tipped off that it was 1.0 by the prices of some of the buildings, so I talked to the host on rcon and he flashed up the info from liblist.gam and, as I expected, we were on a 1.0 server. We played a FULLY playable, if slightly laggy match on hera, more playable than most, with 8 people. We loaded up 1.04 and hera was actually fairly smooth, better than I've seen hera on any server and we had 10 people kicking it, generally with that many or more, mid game hera's pings spike up past 200 for everyone, the pings here never rose above 160 or so even for me, still d/l linux at 109k/sec.

So, I'm imparting to you all, this hosts website, which has contact info, and irc info on it. They're great guys, esepcially the owner, just tell them Grimm Spector sent you.

EDIT: You can play on my server at sod.chimayhem.com:27015, or 38.114.3.151:27015. Both work. Thanx.

Hmm I cant see them making much money at 60.00 for a 20 player pub, unless they are putting more than 1 server on a box. Do you know what your server specs are?

Yea, a bunch of the specs are listed on the site. The most servers they'll put on one box is generally 3. And I believe the boxes are 2.2 GHz Dual Pentiums. They run on Redhat 7.3. So you'll need the fixed AM, but they know that and install the fixed one for you, including the security patch. If you want more info, go talk to the owner on IRC. I mean I think I covered performance in my original post.

EDIT: Did I mention they also do webhosting?

Although the price is good I will stick with my host for now because I get a dedicated P4 2.4 for my ns server. Also I checked the site but was unable to find a link to server specs.

    Thanks for the info

hmmm, well, if it's not there, you can always talk to the owner, but if you have a dedicated box, it must be costing you quite a bit, whereas since there's 2 processors on the one I'm one, I'll only be sharing the processor I'm on with 1 other person. So I'm not exactly worried. Like I said, it pulled of 1.0, hera, less than 100 ping....come on

Um, it said 36 people, the maximum possible is 32 nice try with the graphics, now try common sense.

Assuming he is doing this himself, and not renting from a place like rackshack, then he probably is using the $1000 for 100mb from Congentco.

As for a full 20 player server on Hera running under Linux and everyone was under 100 ping, I doubt it.

Edit: After reading his site, it appears he rents servers from a server company, then uses them for game servers. I know some people who do this, and they seem to work well.

As for his comment about other server companies putting 20 servers on one comp, I would be curious to find out what company is able to do this.

I pay 108/month for my server. This is a dedicated box, no other servers on it. For those you you who may be thinking this is spendy, take a look at pricing of other companies. The servers I found out there with decent pings and good location priced from 150 - 300/month. I tested a server from every company I was interested in and only 1 other company was close to the quality that gibgames gives me.

I have a P4 2.4 1gb ram system from rackshack and it costs around $150 a month. Once the linux code gets better I am hoping to put 1 or 2 more servers on it, one being a tourney server.

that is a fairly good deal, but if it's out of anyone's price range, just hit up the site I left, I think this should clear up the hosting problems people are having, don't you?

think we could get this webbed?
  • HtNickoliHtNickoli Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9786Members
    LOL Webbed.
Why would they web a server company's advertisement? Even if it is just some customer pushing the free adverts? I think your trying to take this "do referrals / get a break system", a little far. After all 99% of the ppl reading the server admins forums, have servers.

as right as you are nickoli, you know as well as I do that lots of people post asking for server companies, at least it'd stop the posts....I'm not really concerned at all...btw, u never play my server

I barely play on my own server. NS has lost its shine. Already bored of the current maps. And with its current system. I rarely see many comebacks. Its usually one team dominates then just drags it out enuff that they can tech and end it in a blaze of glory. Or with this silly can't change teams *#@#* 3-4 ppl drop and games over anyways. Or 1-2 drop and unbalance it enuff, that its more wasted time waiting for one team to tech and end it.

I'll wait and see if 1.1 actually does anything to make the game fun to play more then 1 or 2 rounds on. Then decide if I even want to continue running it.

Does this server host still exist?

I'm looking for a server company, but he seems to be "unreachable"

Well since only like 2 of our members play NS anymore I am putting ours up for rent.

If you want it you can have it for 50.00 US a month.
    Its at

    208.14.89.69:27015

It runs Psychostats 1.9.1 as well.

Post to our boards if you are interested.

Not so hard, with other HL mods.

I used to run a 16 player CS server on my Duron 800Mhz server. I ran it full with PodBots, which use HIGHER CPU than normal players since it has to do the bot calculations in addition to the player calculations. The CPU usage was at about 30%.

Now, if we multiply the number of CS servers my Duron could host, we get 3, then multiply that by the CPU power of a dual 2.8Ghz box, we get 21 servers. There, not so hard, was it?

Besides, most servers don't run bots, so would probably have even lower CPU usage. I doubt that the number of servers on the box is at all an issue; if the CPUs are not maxed out, and all the servers gets good performance, who cares? I think BranZone more likely has a lower gameserver-to-serverbox ratio because they place no restrictions on what mods they run. One NS server currently uses the resources of 3-4 CS servers after all. But we'll see how that changes with NS 1.1
