Sieges need a visual target for them to fire. So after you get a siege up, a marine has to see the target, or you have to scanner-sweep it.

Commanding takes time and practice, so try out "newbie" servers, where pople won't start shouting at you, or you could try bots but imo you won't learn from bost.
Then you have to bind you jump to any other button but the mouse, so that when someone is attack all you have to do is press the jump key and it will bring you there, and it also works with, medpack, ammo, "need orders", and when a building under attack. That will help you get to places which need getting to.

Fire up a few LAN games with bots for the sole purpose of learning how to select units/give units, and learning the maps.

Of course, you'll never really learn unless you get some in-game experience, so wait until the marines have either won without a chance of an alien comeback, or have absolutely no hope of pulling out a marine win, and then ask the current commander if you can jump in the chair for a few minutes - you'll get to see what it's like when *all* your marines are screaming for help at once.

My best advice, however, is to not get stuck in a set pattern. Trying to accomplish the same thing every game will get you a loss 90% of the time. Change it up whenever possible to accomodate for your current situation; keep the aliens on their toes.

Aight here we go, thousands of tips to give.

Become friendly with your jump button, (usually your spacebar). Whenever you hear "your soldiers are under attack" hit space. You also might want to bind a key to, dropping: health, ammo, and scan sweep.
Once those keys are binded, just open the 'Equip' Menu, and hit whatever key is binded and push fire. This is what we call health spamming.

To stop skulk rushs, use mines. Not too many though, its a major drain on resources.

Set up a siege cannon behind a wall, and start scan sweeping whatever's on the other side of it. Or have your buddies look at the alien structures. Either one.

As for general tips:
- RESOURCES MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND
- Do not health spam unless it is absouletly nesscary
- Do not neglect upgrades (arms lab)
- NEVER build a Turret factory in base, unless they are gorge rushing you. (which isn't very likely).

Watch other commanders do their thing too, you can really learn a lot.

And don't always do what other marines ask's you to do.
I mean if there is a marine in base asking for shotgun in early game or something else, like TF and turrets, you should think that is it smart or just a waste of resources.

In my experience, the only people that ask specifically for a shotgun KNOW how to use it. The ones that just ask for a better weapon or an HMG can wait, but if you can spare the res early for a shotgun - do it. In capable hands it's amazing.

try and have a rough strategy before hand, knowin what places you are going to go for or what res points ur going to defend ect ect.

alsom defend those res with mines! don`t need to tf areas, just drop some mines and tell them to mine the res nodes and phase and stuff, also i rely on marines to back up those areas.
turrets i just see waste so much res being made then when fades pop along and kills the tf, well they kill mines also but the res saved you would ave upgraded to level 3 armour and weapons

so to recap: mine mine mine mine mines! bloddy fantastic untill fades, but lev 3 stuff and jp

also relocation is very nice to hives or double res points

Most winning strategies consist of preventing aliens from getting two hives -

-Bear that in mind when u comm.

Edit : If you find your marines keep dieing to skulks, it means they have level 3 carapace and marines have no upgrades - you should at least have level 1 armour and weps by about hmmmmm 10 minutes or less if ur planning on a two hive lock down.

The best way is to experiment with things yourself, and that goes for anything.

I didnt start commanding games till about 2 months after i was in sYn, i had the luxury to observe, our commander, uubu in 100s of scrims. Then I tried a game of my own and did ok. The next game i got better, and so on. This is after of course i pummeled him with questions so hard he told me to stop or i was cut

The best way to find a commander that is really good and ask them for tips. Also by playing as a marine, what do you like, and not like about a commander? Try to put those factors into your commanding style.

Be aggressive.
Force the aliens to respond to your moves, rather than attacking where they choose.
Expand quickly. Aliens are at their weakest in the first few minutes of the game.

Well from my experience, those who starts to ask for a shotgun are guys, who i haven't ever seen before.
I haven't seen for a long time that any clan member or a player who i know, ask for a shotgun in early game.

And i have gave some shotguns to those who askes them, but usually they got killed by a single skulk.
It is just waste of 16 rp.
I mean you can do almost the same with lmg than shotgun and lmg is free.

play multiplayer RTS - pick any good RTS and play it multiplayer, and I mean the real deal.

It is the only way - I'm sure you could get into it as you have no problem with jumping in the comm chair in NS after all.

I just know a lot of people, IRL and online, who are too wussy to play MP RTS.. it's ridiculous.
Some RTS like Age of Empires 2 do take like 3 hours and are extremely draining but Warcraft 3 takes like 15 min per game.

Anyhow after a while you will get used to responding quickly and keeping track of many things at once.

Alternatively you could still win as commander in NS if you have good squad commanders cooperating with you on the ground. But that is a special case so I think training for general competency is best.

I think it is some kind of bug. Aliens can make the two RTS, but they have to place the rt in the right spot.

I have some tips:

Always do that RT that that newbie is asking. Even if it is being atacked right after it was build, it will still give more ressources than it took to build it.

Never protect RTs, since it is a waste of time and ressources. Use that ressources that you would waste protecting it to build an arms lab or do an upgrade.

Never forget about Motion Tracking. I almost always forget about it because I dont need it while comm. And motion tracking is great.

In my opinion, upgrade weapons upgrade first. The marine have the advantage of being able to kill their enemy before it can reach them, so make it easier for the marine to kill that skulk before it can reach him. "The best defence is ofence".

Know the map you are playing. There are some maps that you almost always have to relocate, like Hera. Others have double RTs where you can build your base. In that map that have the Atmosferic, and the Feedwater hive, I ALWAYS relocate to Atmosferic, because the marine start is just a pain in the **** to protect.

NEVER, EVER, GIVE WEAPONS, JETPACKS OR HA if you cant give more of them. After the first weapon is given, all of the newbies think that they should have one too. So if you give a JET + HMG for that marine so he can kill the hive before it is finished, in a matter of seconds all of your team will want it too. That is what I call syndrom of "mom I want it too".

I made a lot of mistakes, but I hope you understood it. My firts language is not english...

Shout a lot.

If you shout a lot people will think you know what you are doing, and if you lose they will think it was because they didn't do the stuff you shouted about good or quick enough.

Wow I'm surprised no one has mentioned this or I'm just blind -.-

Only thing I can see that you'd need to add to what the others are suggesting...

Make HOTKEYS specific to comm. Such as the Med/Ammo packs. Nothing is nicer than havin your comm spam health and ammo when doing a mass rush. Clicking on the menu then on the icon then on the map is just too slow.

Don't forget to click on the spacebar when you hear "Your base is under attack". If they are attacking an RT that has been setup with no defense be sure to recycle it since your going to lose it anyways. Better to get something back instead of losing 22 res...

There is a super secret way to get that 2nd nozzle, unfortunately I haven't been physically told how to. Try laying it on the stairway and it should slide onto it, so or I heard.

But anyways, if your new at commanding, don't relocate. I'm personally against relocation unless the hive is REALLY worth it. But my mindset is just relocation = bad. And since your new, relocating should not be even tried.
• nethyrnethyr Join Date: 2002-12-23 Member: 11405Members
i'm not saying everyone should relocate, but think of the pro's vs cons. you choose your own setup instead of having to get into annoying alien-advantage comm chairs (read, ns_bast). you control a hive, and if you control the center hive, you essentially split the map, as opposed to sitting off in your own little pointless area of the map. what it comes down to is this.

marine start: 1 res, pre built comm chair.
hive relocation: 1-3 res, slight time delay, occupy a friggin hive.

dont go relocating just cos "its the right thing to do", but never say its dumb just because you dont like it. it has its advantages.

The map is NS_Hera. As for dropping the rt, aliens must do that by going up the incline to the left slightly...then trying to drop it. I know it sounds funny but it works. Ahh well.

As for relocating I do not suggest reloing to Holo room. It is a VERY open area and you can get hit from all directions. I know that I'm new to commanding but it just takes so many resources. I can see where it might be advantageous with a newb team, but if you have half a team that knows what there doing designate some of them to be base defenders and then all you have to worry about is techs.

Go commander on maps you are very comfortable with from the first person perspective - know what your team is really looking at, having to run through, where the tight spots are -- if you haven't played alien on the map, or been involved in a few victories and losses, it can make a big difference.
