List The Best!
I was watching The Sixth Sense last night for like the
80th time. I love it because it's one of the films which draws
you in and keeps your attention through-out the entire film.
Then I started to think about other films (and some games)
which did this really well. Here's a quick list which I want you
all to add your faves to so we can all enjoy em.
Films
The Sixth Sense - The vast amount of silence used in the film
was amazingly effective.
Phone Booth = Another "what will happen next" type of film.
I think the entire film uses less than 100 yards of set but it still
kept me on the edge of me seat (literally!) and I could barely takes
my eyes of the screen.
Games:
Aliens Versus Predator 2 - Playing through the Marine campaign
had some fantastic moments that made me jump alot! At one point I
hit my knee on my desk I jumped so much! The dark corners and lack
of light through the game REALLY mess with your head. You shoot at
emptyness, throw flares left, right and centre.... only to find out you're
getting worked up by nothingness. I remember crawling through a vent
and all of a sudden my motion tracker starts bleeping. The speed of
the dreaded "BLEEP!" increases and my HUD shows the movement is
coming from behind me! I spin 180 degrees and switch on my Flashlight....
nothing there! So I turn back around and plod on through the vent.
A few yards later I hear it again.... "BLEEP!" only this time its come with
accompanying sounds of the metal panels being bent under the weight
of whatever is behind me. I spin around again and there's a huge Alien
coming at me! Just as I realise what it is my flashlight battery dies!
I panic and empty a a full magazine of ammo into the darkness!!! After
a fresh has been loaded I throw a flare and there's the decapitated body
of the Alien about 60cm in front of me. Close escape. I save my game,
wait for the battery to recharge and carry on.
Lots more moments like that in the game.
Silent Hill - Quite a short but a very atmospheric game. I remember
playing this at 2am with my mate Graham as we guided Harry Mason through
that deserted school. The great thing about this game was the Radio feature.
Where your "broken Radio" would crackle when an enemy was close. It
made players very paranoid and the great use of fog didn't help either!
If you haven't played this game then you're missing out BIG TIME! It's now
a budget title so you have no excuse!
I can't think of anymore off the top of my head but i'll post them
as soon as I remember them
Post your faves people!

Also the game Call of Cthulthu based on the lovecraft´s stories promise a similar atmosphere
I thought Metal Gear Solid was pretty atmospheric...
The graphics are stunning, along with the incredible level design, atmosphereic lighting, and just downright scary sound (thanks to Trent Reznor), the whole experience is just jaw-dropping, pants-wetting fun.
Max Payne - Gritty and hopeless. I felt many times while playing this game like there was no possible way I was going to make it out the other end. And yet, through what seems like an endless string of unbelievable moves and dumb luck, you get through it, against all the odds. Quite a rush.

Be careful how you lot reply to this.
I don't want to sound rude but please PM
each other about this kinda thing. I don't won't
my one decent topic to be locked because of
warez/leaked files/illegal downloads or whatever.
Thanks.
Battle Royale-- seeping atmosphere from every pore
Alien-- The first and the best for frightning NSish atmosphere
NS- Duh
Grim Fandango, (esp. the 2nd year spent in Rubacava)
Game- Half-Life
Man, Half-Life single player was sooooooooooooooo scary sometimes, randomly a bridge falls from beneath you and you fall, headcrabs hiding underneath a staircase jump at you screaming, the chatter of grunts who are out to get your head, the thumping of the tentacle alien searching for you...
Iee ! It was fun though.
NS! TADA!
Just kidding
X-COM: Enemy Unknown. The first and the best. It's sad that it doesn't work on my 1,4gHz Thunderbird with XP (damn you Microsoft!)
But... There's still hope. www.projectxenocide.com , a remake of the game. Looks VERY promising (and it's free!). Take a look while ur at it.
Yeah, I second that, I'm an SS2 convert, I've got a ripped version, but I'm going to buy the CD for the FMV.
Abomination: The Nemesis Project (X-Com style squad based strategy. Looks dated but oozes atmosphere.)
AVP2
RTCW
Serious Sam
Doom 2
Operation Flashpoint
Resident Evil (The GC version)
Eternal Darkness (Man that ca be creepy!)
Films:
End Of Evangelion
Akira (Particularly the end.)
