hello, been playing NS a bit now. and i've read up on some of the basic obviouse tactics to moving around as a marine but i'm not up to scratch on all of the little things like why marines are almost always invinsible in the vent jut outside marine start on nancy etc. i see people constantly crouching against walls and things like that. just wondering if anyone is willing to share any of the finer details for top notch marining? variations in hit box's in certain situations.. things like that. thanku

running around the skulk in circles, and make sure you got pistol easy to get to.
    i got it as last weapon used which is my q and since i use wasd. i can whip it out and finish off that damn fade. <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo-->

Right now the crouching marine's hitbox is incredibly small, which is why marines are so tough to kill as a skulk in a vent. It will be fixed in 1.1.

I really dislike marines crouching in corners just so that they can live longer when they know 75% of the bites will miss them.

humm. what about things like when they go up and down ladders.. i've noticed feet are invinsable when marines go down ladders and is the marine hitbox wrong just when crouching in corners or at anytime?

well done.. you just reached happy helpful factor of .... - 7 . i just want to know some details that may help me in-game.. if you don't know any or don't want to tell me... don't respond. nothing halmfull in asking. day in day out on pub servers i see people crouching everywhere and doing little things that make them better players thats all.

first.. DO NOT CROUCH in corners ... its really really lame..

whenever u are turning a corner, do it with a quick jump (or bhop) and prepare to shoot. You must be paranoid to play as a marine. You CANT slack off. Not even when you are getting ammo.

When you get bited jump and youll get rocketed backwards, should be enough to pummel the lil bugger.

Learn how many bullets to kill every alien. As time passes it will come easier.

yes, you are completely correct about marines being hard to hit while crouched, as well as not being hit on their headd or feet while on ladders

I thought I told you this tom?

Marines crouched are slightly shorter than they appear. |_ "Vent bug"
Skulks biting on walls aim slightly higher for no apparant reason. |
Marines for some reason cannot be bitten from directly underneath by either lerk or skulk "ladder exploit".

there is another advantage that marines get when they duck. you get a better shooting angle on the skulk because you are level with him instead of shooting down on him. if you want me to tell you more techniques email me because i dont want to leak them out to everyone <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

if you need to retreet but enemys are coming dont hit the back key, use left and right strafe at an angle backwards (walkin backwards is slow, sidestrafin is always full speed)

with an alium is realy far away, switch to the pistal first, and shoot wit that, when it gets closer pull out your lmg or shoty that way you dont waist amo on the gun spread and get caught reloadin.

jumping and crouching hels them miss you, also alien usaly have trouble biting you when they are on your head (for some reason a skulk has to hit the crouch key to bite something below his feet, even though he is uber short anyway, go figur)

The main thing you need to learn is sound is ur freind, listen for that clickety clack of little claws, practice to get good at figure out were a noise is comin from.

Ignore any methods posted here on how to abuse hit box bugs. Its lame and its gonna be changed.
  • LumpLump Join Date: 2003-04-16 Member: 15558Members
cheers for the info, but i know most of the common sense stuff like strafing to go backwards and using pistols for long range, listening lol, its just i want to be aware of little hitbox bugs so i can avoid them e.g. .. that guys in a vent/on a ladder so i will wait until he is out/off before i take a chunk out of him.

didn't know you had to crouch to bite somthing below you tho <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> cheers that ones useful

Btw, when something or someone can't be hurt/killed, it's called invincible. Invisible is when you can't see it/him/her/them.

    Is that sarcasm Zigg?

Tip : Hitting crouch whilst biting helps a bit. Leaping = death for marines if theyre in the vents.

Sound is absolutely key. Sound allows you to prepare for an assualt before the enemy is even in your crosshair. If you do not use headphones I strongly recommend you buying a pair, me and most of my clan use the Plantronics Audio 90 headset (www.plantronics.com) for 30$, I have not found a better headset for that little ammount of money, a lot of them run into $50+.

The reason I say use headphones is because it is easier to tell which direction an enemy is comming from, because you can hear it out the side where its comming from, where as speakers, its tougher to tell.

Also, if you hear something suspicious, do not be afraid to stop and react to the direction from which you though you heard it. Better to be safe than back in the spawning queue. I've seen too many times where a skulk is flanking a marine and the marine turns around too late and gets chomped.

To summarize, get a good pair of headphones, and react to all alien sound.

Blam with the science from firewater. 100% agreement here. Although occasionally I'll be trying to decide which of the two aliens I'm listening to is closer and sit there looking everywhere until I die uselessly. But hey. That's the majority of the time.

Although although, the Koss SB40 headset is, I believe, a better headset than the plantronics one for a mere $10 more. Certainly more comfortable.

In terms of general development of skills: ignore all the regular forum advice and go rambo. Alot. Don't just run around like a total idiot, but just pound on their hive, try to spawncamp, try to take on groups of 2, 3, and 4 skulks. This is also good for your ego, as skulks pre-carapace are (as they say) easy pickins'.
