"low" Fps

<div class="IPBDescription">Not really low, but anyway...</div> This isn't something that really bothers me, it just confuses me.
My specs are:

AMD Athlon XP 2000+

512mb 333mhz RAM

Sapphire ATI Radeon 9700 Pro

MSI KT3 Ultra2 Mainboard

I think that these specs should be enough to hold a constant fps of 100, but it apparently isn't.
Sometimes my fps drops below 60, in rare occassions under 50.
I tested it with my friends GeForce 4, with that I got a constant 100 fps.
Anyone else who get "low" fps with a Radeon 9700 Pro, and maybe know how to fix it?

Well I dont think you should be complaining, but heres some things you might want to look at

Check your graphics cards settings, see if antialiasing or Truform is turned on, things like this, make half life look much better, so personally I would suggest you leave them on, but if you can tell the difference between 60 and 100 fps, and you really dont mind have a pixelated picture then turn them off.

I assume you tested it in the same resolution?, I would seriously suggest using 1024 * 768, it may not look as nice, but it seems to make aiming a little easier and you see more of the alien blood effects.

I have an ATI 9800 Pro and this produces the best results for me:

1). In config.cfg make sure "ati_npatch" is set to "0.0". I believe this will turn off Trueform and prevent the strange fps fluctuations that you might experience from time to time.

2). Use the Catalyst v3.1 drivers (or even try the v2.5 which doesn't support the ATI 9800). The v3.2 drivers cause HL to black screen lockup if you press ESC or ALT-TAB. Someone else posted that they got better results with the v2.5 drivers.

3). Make sure you fix the refresh rate bug if you are running W2K or XP (<a href='http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/' target='_blank'>RefreshForce</a>). You will get your best results if you run the game at a high refresh rate and turn VSYNC ON. Personally, I run at 1280x960 at 100Hz. This matches nicely with HL's 100 fps limit and gives me nice, smooth video (no jerking, studdering, or visual tears).

4). Your directx version can make a difference. I am running v8. I tried v9 before I just reloaded my system and I definately noticed different results with different games (some better, some worse). I'm still not sure which version is better for HL. If you are running v9, realize that v9.0a was just released to fix some of the initial bugs.

and your specs will be able to hold 100 all the time

If you have a decent monitor, regardless of whether you have VSYNC ON or OFF, you should make sure that it is running at higher than 60Hz. If your running your game at 60Hz with VSYNC OFF, then you are definately not getting anywhere near as good a picture as you could be getting. Increasing your monitor's refresh rate to match or exceed your fps (if your monitor can support it) will do wonders for the video quality. Your eyes will thank you for it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Thanks a lot for the help, I appreciate it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I used reforce to set my refresh rate to 110Hz.
Had to go down to 800*600, but it was definetly worth it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also, I got higher fps drops in other HL-mods, in Desert Crisis for example, My fps sometimes went under 20, very annoying.
Also, when i turned on "Support KTX buffer region extension" and
"Force Z-buffer depth" to 24-bit I got a very nice boost, I get 100 now.
Anybody who can explain for me what this actually does?

Hey, I have a similar problem, but different specs:
    Athalon 1.2Ghz
    GeForce4 Ti 4600
    512MB of DDR RAM
    Motherboard is some Japanese trash...

Anyways, I used to get FPS that fluctuated between 40-60 at 1024x768x32 4xFSAA. I always thought that was a bit low and disappointed me greatly that my system could not run a 5 year old engine at maxed frames. Strangely, now that I've installed another 256MB card of RAM, my FPS has degraded. Very frustrating, as I was expecting a performance INCREASE. If anyone knows what the problem is please tell me how to fix it, or at least what it is. The only program I have running in the background is WinTasks 4 Standard. Thanks in advance.
