Motion Tracking

Disappears when you build
I was just wondering if it was an intended feature for Marine motion tracking to disappear while building, or maybe just a bug. I really can't see much value to it as a balancing mechanism if it was intended, but then again I'm not Flay or someone so I don't have the big picture.

Anyone?

odd, weve just been discussing this ingame. it may be an oversight, or it maybe to represent the illusion of concentration.

I have a feeling it's intended. Somebody building is a vulnerable target.

    Yes
and the gorge keeps his hive site while building too

    A gorge's hivesight is mental.

A marine's MT is something he must "look at his sensors" for. The MT doesn't work when building for the same reason you can't fire while building - The marine is busy building.

That's all well and good, but it kinda ruins your chances of being sneaky about building a turret factory if you have to continuously stop building and look around for enemies, since it takes a second or two after you stop building for the MT to pop back up.

    Bring a teammate. Problem solved.

Just like a civilian said, bring a friend along. Have someone cover you while you build and voila, sneaky little skulk is no longer much of a threat. This is slightly off topic but it always amuses me how all the marines in the area will usually run and build and no one will cover their backs. (this is pub related, never played a clanmatch so can't say if this happens there) I've wiped out whole squads along with everything they were building on many occasions. Just boggles the mind how that can happen.

You're missing the point. I'm trying to build without the Aliens noticing, thus I stop building if I see any nearby on the motion tracking, which I have to stop building to use.

For example, as frequently happens with pub servers on ns_nothing, say the marines are holed up outside Cargo with all of the upgrades and a decent chunk of res, but they're getting constantly hit with rushes so they can't expand.

In a situation like this, I usually beg a JP from the comm and go zooming off through Marine Start (the aliens never bother towering and webbing it up) and most of the time can make it into Power Silo and up into the rafters without being noticed.

The comm sees me and drops a turret factory. I am now all by myself, IN THE HIVE, with something to build. If they notice me, I'm dead and the plan is screwed. Thus, my favored tactic is to build in short bursts, one or two notches on the building's health, and then stop to check my motion tracking and look around.

Works great, except that it takes FOREVER to build a factory this way, and generally a lerk or something will come zooming down the hallway nearby so quickly I can't do anything about it, hear my building: Game Over.

I realize strategies like this shouldn't work often, it's kind of a stretch. But if the gorge can attack, use his hive sight, and build all at the same time, I think it would only be fair if marines had their motion tracking while they build.

You could bring a teammate and ask him to tell you if there is an alien approaching.

But the thing is that marines have teamwork emphasized. Needing a buddy to cover yer arse while building is teamwork.

I generally build for like 10 seconds, then look around, then repeat. While I am building, I rely on SOUND to be my warning system. Works great.

Why can't your teammate be your commander? He better damn well be watching yer arse if you're building something. Least he can do is give you a heads up. I know some comms can do it without motion tracking...

I always just thought it was almost like symbolism. While you are building you are busy with what you are doing and cant watch the motion tracking.

If you wanna make sure none of the small blue circles have become large blue circles stop building for a sec; which would be equivelent to someone who is careful in building.

I think it was inteneded this way.

use your spkers, you can hear them coming, use the comm to listen for u, use a teamamte to cover you, its probably on purpose that MT disapears because when your ocncentrating (in the case of building stuff) i assume that you switch off and focus on the task.

ive been in games where someoen was building behind enemy lines, and the comm was saying
"ok dont make a sound theres a skulk coming"
    and then
    "ok go build again"

so the comm is the best guy to use as well as your own ears, on pub servers u cant rely on your teamates unless you know them, so if u heard somethign coming you would probably stop building and defend yourself instead of leaving it to your cover.

this feature is good and in my opinion motion tracking shouldn't even work a certain radius away from an observatory. as an alien it kills almost all chance of ambushing and as a marine it kills the suspense.

I think its a great feature. A marine SHOULD be concentrated too much on building to see his mt to notice that skulk is coming up behind him. Just listen carefully and you should still pick up the sounds a good portion of the time, but not all the time, which I think is good for balancing.
