Why Do People Hate Custom-fun Maps?

buggerbbbuggerbb Join Date: 2003-03-04 Member: 14296Members

**Dodges airbore objects**
I was playing on a few pub servers the other day and we played an hour long game on some map, and it was fun. Then the next map started and a few of us started asking for a map change to Siege or pill box, and good god people started yelling and insulting each other like someone just killed your mom or something.

It was split down the middle and we took votes but people voted to play the offical maps by 13/11... Then the people who voted the offical map started bashing on the people that wanted custom maps, then everyone left and there were 8 people playing when all the dust settled... YAY!

What is so bad in taking a break from the hour games and play a fast 20 or 30 minute fun map??? They are simple entertainment, just like awp map, scoutnknives, playground, and iceworld in CS... Those are some of the most played map in CS... So i ask again, what is bad about a few quick game of simple entertainment on pub servers???

Most custom fun maps aren't fun due to the way they are designed. I will have fun with a fun map, when it is fun. If that means anything.

I only play Siege to practice aim with JP / HMG.
Other than that, I play regular maps.

I imagine those who didn't want to play the fun maps get their kicks from a different source. Their response might be something like "Well we want to keep playing the official maps. What's wrong with that?"

There doesn't seem to be anything specifically wrong with either of these options - just people having strong opinions in two different ways. I don't have much of an opinion either way, but the reason I haven't wanted to play a fun map is that I would have to stop playing long enough to download. It's faster for me to find another server.

I think that's one of those signs that I need to cut back on NS.....I'm really glad 1.1 appears to be still in testing during finals week. I'd either give in, play, and fail my finals, or I wouldn't be able to concentrate cuz of all the new NS stuff I'd be thinking about....Oy. No NS for me next week!

I usually avoid custom maps of any type, because I don't want to bother learning something I might never play again anyways.

Roger that... ns_freefall (inspired by misslecommand) is the brainchild of nC's founder, HoundDawg. You can check out the details and d/l the map here.
Some of the neater features included are a pool of water for falling Onos, Marine bunkers for resource protection, and sectioned hives for better protection. Multiple platforms help to insure jetpackers reaching their objectives while allowing the aliens to confront them more readily. Resources are scaled back slightly only giving one per "tick" per res for the TSA team.

I would love to play custom maps, but all the ones I have played so far have been horrible.

For one round fun maps are ok, but then they just get god awfully annoying. You have to admire some of the innovation that goes into maps like those, though, the concepts are just good sometimes. Like missilecommand is a great idea that doesn't always work out very well, hehe.

Never played any novelty NS maps, but I know for damned sure that in CS its fun maps (knife maps, gren maps, sniper maps, goddamned FY maps) completely go against the spirit of the game and are probably in some large measure responsible for the now-terrible state of the once-glorious Counter Strike.

If y'all want to play a DM-style game, grab UT or Q3. If y'all want to play NS, play NS.

Anyhow, 'fun' maps are not really fun when your FPS drops to a value smaller than my waistline, and the only visible texture is the boring one from the wall_lab series.

/me resists urge to make comment about PT's waistline, due to liking having posting ability enabled.

'Fun' maps are fun as long as they fulfill both of the primary uses for them.

    1. Short, or only played for 1 round per cycle.

    2. They are actually fun. (Siege isn't. Siege is just a way for people to Onos & paralyze people to death)

And let me tell you, it's fun. For the onos, anyway.

I'm all for dedicated siege or missilecommand servers, so you know what you're getting... forcing them on people in the map rotation is not cool, imo.

I don't mind trying out some of these new maps. A couple are actually rather impressive. Others though...seem...just kinda stupid.

i like custom maps, but if they are "fun"-maps.... no thanks... it's not really NS-like.... if i want fun i'll stroke puppies or something, when i wanna play NS... i don't want to play a "fun"-map but a map that is NS-worthy...

All the "fun" maps apart from siege, which can be a good laugh, are stupidly inbalanced, so theyre not worth playing....
