Well, My Map's Dead...

<div class="IPBDescription">freaking bad_string...</div> I tried going back to an older version of VHE like everyone said to do, and I still get this Host_Error: bad string thing... So I'm giving up on this map. ANd I don't think I'll be mapping again for a while... At least not until the new VHE is released... Unless someone here knows how to fix the damn thing, because I sure as hell can't do it.

I noticed that my hive entitys are the same size as a player start entity now, instead of being a pink box like they were before...

That error commonly occurs if you do an -onlyents compile with a map that's had its brushes changed. Are you use -onlyents?

Nope, I've done about 10 full compiles and I can't get the damn thing to work. If someone wants to take a look at it I can send 'em the rmf, because I've already tried everything I can think of. Even tried copying and pasting the whole thing into a new map...

I'd be glad to help out. The more people the better I suppose. 56k only here though, so no 50mb rmfs <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

It's about 2.5 MB... Do you guys have any idea how to fix it though? Also, if I send someone the .rmf they have to promis not to rip stuff from my map and put it in theirs, although, I guess there's not much in it worth ripping at the moment <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I don't know if this will be helpful in your case, but I remember when I had problems with a map I had started in one place in WorldCraft 3.0, and tried to complete it elsewhere using version 2.2 (or some similar number). I was able to fix a similar error to the one you are seeing by deleting one of the first lines in the .map file before using that in the older version of WorldCraft or compiling. I think it was the "mapversion" line, but it was a long time ago, so I might be mistaken. Maybe somebody can remember this better?

*EDIT* eeeh...on second reading, never mind. I don't think the two problems are anywhere near similar.

Have you performed a check for map problems in Hammer?

I found this snippet on SnarkPit.com:

    Host_Error: Bad String
This rare error only happens in game/server mode when sprites, models, sounds, or text strings (but not all strings!) are initialized and precached. If the string/name for the sprite, model, sound, or miscellaneous text string either starts with a non-printable ASCII character, or is 0 length (ie: starts with a non-printable null ASCII character), then the error will occur.
Solution: search thru entities like env_glow, env_sprite, ambient_generic, env_shooter, etc. - anything the engine has to precache a file for the bad name.

Problem is, I'm not using any env_glows, env_sprites, or env_shooters. And I'm only using one ambient_generic and there's nothing wrong with it.

Alright, I replaced all the hives, because someone said something about how adding hives with the new hammer messes it up, and a just removed a line from my .map that said something like "sounds" 1 or something like that because I was unable to see anything like that in any of my other .maps in my maps folder. It's compilign now. should be don e in 20-30 minutes.

Don't stretch your pillar texture like that..on one side, it looks fine, and on the other, it's blurry!

Yeah, I know, but I couldn't find a better texture to put there.
