There are no MDL importers. You have to decompile the MDL to its component SMDs, and then import the reference SMD.

Both an MDL decompiler and an SMD Import MAXScript are linked to in the Modeling 101 topic.

Give me a quote, then. What is it called?

[E:] I know very well that you cant just import a whole
model into MS/3Dsmax, just a quick human error

im really impressed by the tons of links in the moddeling 101 thread.
And its all so tidied up...

1) The fourth bolded and underlined line in the Modeling 101 forum reads "De-Compiling Models." Directly below the "---" break in that section, you will find the sentence "The Decompiler and Compiler are attached to this post."

2) Under the bolded and underlined line that reads "Modeling Tools," the fifth link is to a "MAX R4.x/R5 .SMD Exporter."

3) Under the bolded and underlined line that reads "Modeling Tools," the second-to-last link is to a selection of "Maxscript Game Importers," which are apparently "importers for MD2, MDX, MD3, MDC, and MDS. For both Max and GMax." There is also an SMD importer available here; I will edit the post accordingly. Note that I found the SMD importer at this site all by myself.

I'm not posting the links here, because they are readily available in the Modeling 101, and have been this whole time.

I'm sorry this post is so curt, but I'm really getting sick of people in general complaining that the Modeling 101 topic isn't helpful. It is *extremely* helpful - it's very clearly laid out, and leads to a TON of useful tools and tutorials. Stop whining for someone to hold your hand and spoon-feed you every little tidbit, and do a little poking around on your own. Nothing but experience is going to teach you to model.

Alright so where do i decompile the mdl to a SMD then do i use milkshape then save it as a autocad dxf file?

Milkshape? Autocad?? What exactly are you trying to do, anyway?
• JamilJamil Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4829Members
It doesn't matter what file type you use. Just as long as both programs can read the filetype. I know 3ds files are compatible with both 3d studio(duh) and milkshape. Import the smd in milkshape if you have that, then export as 3ds. Then load up 3d studio and import the 3ds file.

Right click on the perspective view and select textured.

Milkshape can't render things..

3DSMax has plugins that can export animations as flash files.

Ok...I know milkshape cant render thats why I convert it into a .dxf (autocad) then i import it it just has no colors or anything its just a plain solid model with no skin lol. Im trying to add skin to it. Ok I see the skin but when i Import it into my Swift3D And my 3DSMAX It seems to still have no skin juust the plain old model.
• MalambisBZMalambisBZ Join Date: 2002-11-21 Member: 9559Members
Why don't you just import the .smd into 3ds max instead of converting it into a .dxf? And why .dxf anyway? Why not 3ds?
