<div class="IPBDescription">GG Ken!</div> <b>Ken20Banks</b> (aka just plain 'Ken Banks'), maker of <a href='http://nsworld.ns-central.co.uk/Map.php?UniqueID=15' target='_blank'>NS_Nothing</a> and <a href='http://nsworld.ns-central.co.uk/Map.php?UniqueID=85' target='_blank'>NS_Powerhouse</a>, mapper for <a href='http://www.hl-nightwatch.net/' target='_blank'>HL Nightwatch</a>, and master of RR.org's hosted site <a href='http://tald.readyroom.org/' target='_blank'>TALD</a>, was recently hired by <a href='http://www.ravensoft.com/' target='_blank'>Raven Software</a> to help make:

<b>QUAKE 4!!!</b>

You might have heard of the Quake franchise. It sort of invented the concept of internet FPS gaming, true 3-D FPS gaming, and took iD to the next level after Doom. It was and is the underlying code of most FPS games you play in various iterations, and now one of our own will be helping to make the next sequel the most popular FPS franchise of all time. We all think Ken really worked hard, followed his dreams, and is now making them a reality, and we wish him the very best.

As a sidenote: Ken's only 18 years old, and is in the process of graduating high school right now! Think you can't find a place in the video game industry? Ken20, KungFuSquirrel, and Plaguebearer (NS PT and mapper) have already done so. Who will be next?

Good luck Ken, we'll miss you, brother!

    I'll clarify MonsE's comments by pointing out that I'm 19, ending my second year of college... and lead MP level designer on an as-yet-unnanounced Activision budget title.

    Luck has nothing to do with it. Hard work, a great attitude, and a mindset to move forward in life, to spend your life doing something you love -- there's the key. For Ken and I, it came early. For PB, it took a long struggle to get back into it, but perseverence now has him moving to California for a brand new job.

    Ken, you deserve it. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Remember, I'm coming to visit this summer... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The gaming world is not even fully aware of the immense imaginative mapping force that is Ken Banks but soon, soon my friends, they will know... they will all know. And they will revel in some twisted, futuristic, industrial, golag of Banks' deepest, darkest, vilest mapping designs.

    I can't say I really like Q multiplayer, but I confess to eventually playing through <i>every</i> version singleplayer just to see the maps. Ken, now you've actually made me <i>look forward</i> to the release of Q4. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    can i ask about some capabilities of the Doom3 engine? we all know it can do bump or normal maps, but can it do gloss and specular maps. i asked some people at Id and they won't answer that question. it seems i found a limit to the engine already.

    1) Ken's under a strict NDA, as would be any id, Raven, or other employees working with the technology. They cannot at all talk about engine features, whether they are in fact there or not.

    2) Of course it has specular maps. The entire selling point of the engine is the bump map/specular highlights combo. You can spot it in screens, even.

    Well, good luck and good job!

    i know Doom3 can do specular and gloss but i'm doubting it can use textures to determine how those 2 things vary along surfaces. i'm interested in starting to make maps for a Doom3 engine but only if it has those features.

    I'd suggest making maps for Quake4 over DoomIII.

    Gj, Ken. You give hope to others aspiring to make it into professional game developing like myself.
