<div class="IPBDescription">No, it´s not in a bad way..</div> This is for new players who just started playing and noticed that there seem to be a lot of frustration with new players hanging around. They might even have been the target of this frustration.
So..
After reading some threads from new players and seeing some naughty things happen on several servers I had a revelation.
This is a team mod. Perhaps much more than other mods. And success depends on teamwork and on everyone knowing what to do. As a new player you probably have no ideá of what to do when someone tells you to "web the vent at nameless" or "Protect cargo". So you ask them what they mean by that or how to get there or whatever, and more often than not they will tell you. But not allways.
People hate to loose. And when they do, they allmost allways look for someone to blame. And being new makes you the perfect scapegoat.
However harsh this might seem I ask you not to get discouraged by this attitude from a selective few. A lot of the so called veterans wont hesitate to show you the ropes if you ask them. And sooner or later you will get the hang of it and learn to find your way around maps.
It is a sad thing that human nature is what it is but hang in there. Before you know it, you will be the one screaming in frustration over some new player aimlessly wandering the map with no clue what so ever.
When that happens, try to remember your own first hours of confusion. And even though you might not feel like helping him, try to keep the yelling at a minimum.
Thanatos.
PS. Most players actually tend to be quite helpful if you can just ignore that single jerk yelling at you.

The group of ppl with whom you play makes a lot of difference!
I mean when I get in a team of moaning and yelling players, hereafter refered to as "capslockguys" <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->, you try to stay calm, but eventually I can't stand it and start yelling back or just leave
Find a nice little server to play on, and stay there to learn the ropes, get to know some ppl, then they will know your new to the game and help you out and such <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Cheers all <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
For ns_nancy, be sure to get a map that has the vents clearly marked, here are some good ones:
<a href='http://www.tribes2maps.com/ns/' target='_blank'>http://www.tribes2maps.com/ns/</a>
im not actually shouting just trying to get the fact that there is enemies inc noticed
I eventually let them know they were dealing with an expert; or not... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
and remember; a Shotgun is for life, not just for Feedwater. <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->
No printer? Perhaps you have a second windows computer next to you? If so then <a href='http://www.tribes2maps.com/ns/nsmapmon.html' target='_blank'>this</a> should prove useful.
1) Stick with your teammates.
2) Don't touch the comm chair.
3) Don't evolve to gorge.
Do these and I promise I will never yell at you.
Newbie who go gorge, do nothing useful, and refuse to degorge because "I like gorge" (Tom from yesterday's miserable ns_tanith game, you know who you are) immediately cross the line that divides "newbie" and "n00b smacktard". On one side of the line, I will patiently explain things to you, follow you around and make sure you don't die, and generally be your guardian angel. On the other side of the line, I will do everything in my power to get you to leave the server, because if you can't listen to your team and try to be helpful, you simply aren't ready to play this game yet.
the single most useful piece of advice to anyone looking to or already playing NS
- Never enter a Command chair
- Never evolve to a gorge
Tell me now, how will the new players ever learn how to be a good commander or a good gorge? Sure there are some newbie servers out there, but... I don't mind having a newbie as a gorge or a commander... You can see some very interesting things...
Another factor that will allow newbie gorge or comm: the game is composed of newbies, mostly. with only a few experienced players.
Last but not least, any player can benefit from the rare gift of common sense. Try to find yours before entering a game of NS.
And about advices, all at least decent NS players can give advice (excluding those yelling ones)...
It's rather fun watching a newbie commander and he on the other hand learns...
As for gorging, see the wonders of the world! See a gorge going suicide on the alien base with spits, see offence chambers put on resource nozzles, see defence chambers standing alone between doors... It's fun! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
First- look for newbies pick one team member to help him/her, why? My first game I tried doing everything the comm told me then when it went belly up whose fault was it mine the newbie,( "if newbie had built the ..... we would have won"). Why did they all run around having fun shooting, they ran straight past me no one helped, but did the comm blame them, no. If a structure is that important why send the newbie a long way from base to build it when your other players ran straight past it, O I forgot you can't blame yourselves you have a newbie, he/she can't defend themselves because they are newbies and no self respecting vet player would take the side of a newbie and say in truth we lost because we forgot the newbie is still learning and we left him/her in the lurch, so feel important abuse the newbie.
Second- What happened to the advice (tell the team you're new and it makes it easier). That's the biggest load of b...sh.t I have ever heard. I told the team I was new and what did I get (O NO A NEWBIE WE"RE GUNNA LOSE GO JOIN THE ALIENS) . I left in disgust.
Third-The advice protect your teammates when they build, HAHAHA I was killed three times trying to build while my "teammates" ran past going elsewhere, while listening to comm (where's newbie why isn't he building) DUH if you're getting killed it's hard to build.
Third- Where is the teamwork.
I'm sorry maybe this should be somewhere else. In a new post maybe?<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> I have more like that , I refuse to take the blame for trying to listen learn and do the best I can.
Oh yeah I left and joined another game and bugga me it was a hoot. Had, notice I said Had to go alien it was a blast . Didn't quite know what I was doing but followed peoples advice tried to follow other players, learn map try to sneak around but was killed often by those sneaky marines who were experienced, the difference, no-one shouting the newbie lost it for us the atmosphere was WOW. This time my ISP decided to crash so don't know what happened. I will keep playing if the game is like the second time I joined.
But think on this all you experienced players we get discouraged being abused for wanting to play and trying to learn not all of us go gorge/comm. We can bring new skills etc to the game and help the game grow and prosper but if we get abused too much we will give it a miss and that will be the games loss. Sorry this is long but I could have put more and I thought it was time that someone stood up for the newbies if we don't the vets surely won't. NOW LET THE FLAMING commence.
Oh, and if you keep getting killed while building, don't be afraid to ask for backup to watch your back, or vice versa. Communication is essential here, and feedback, even from a newbie, is important. (just make sure the feedback isn't along the lines of "OMG what's that big black thing that shoots globs of acid?!")
Although changing your name to something else will make you more "dedicated" (at least you bothered to change your name), but you gotta make sure you tell your team that you're new. Having a normal player who's silent all the time and sucking bad pisses me off (dunno if this pisses other ppl off too)... But if you tell your team that you're new, and you keep communications link with them, we can help you out with whatever you need. Staying silent, and having us assume you're not a noob, is the worst possible thing to do.
Newbies + Comming/Gorging:
Only comm/gorge in 3-4 player games... Where the other player on your team will want you to comm/gorge so he/she can go shoot some aliens/chomp some marines... On larger games, the games tend to be tenser, and will make players really want to win. So if you want comm/gorge experience, do it on small games. You can also just check out the interface of the comm/gorge if you play a LAN game alone (host the game) and then type "sv_cheats 1" in the console. It allows the game to start without an opponent on the other team... However, res towers don't seem to pump more res out...
