A Warning To New Players.

No, it´s not in a bad way..
This is for new players who just started playing and noticed that there seem to be a lot of frustration with new players hanging around. They might even have been the target of this frustration.
So..
After reading some threads from new players and seeing some naughty things happen on several servers I had a revelation.

This is a team mod. Perhaps much more than other mods. And success depends on teamwork and on everyone knowing what to do. As a new player you probably have no ideá of what to do when someone tells you to "web the vent at nameless" or "Protect cargo". So you ask them what they mean by that or how to get there or whatever, and more often than not they will tell you. But not allways.

People hate to loose. And when they do, they allmost allways look for someone to blame. And being new makes you the perfect scapegoat.
However harsh this might seem I ask you not to get discouraged by this attitude from a selective few. A lot of the so called veterans wont hesitate to show you the ropes if you ask them. And sooner or later you will get the hang of it and learn to find your way around maps.

It is a sad thing that human nature is what it is but hang in there. Before you know it, you will be the one screaming in frustration over some new player aimlessly wandering the map with no clue what so ever.
When that happens, try to remember your own first hours of confusion. And even though you might not feel like helping him, try to keep the yelling at a minimum.

Thanatos.

PS. Most players actually tend to be quite helpful if you can just ignore that single jerk yelling at you.

also im hoping that you will start as marines (rines). they are much easier than the aliens to learn the ropes as long as you do not enter the Commander's Chair (comm chair). If you do want to go in the comm chair then ask the people on your team and they may or may not let you but keep trying. you should also hopefully have the auto-help on which tells you the basics when you look at something and soon enough you should get the hang of it. When you dare to enter the complex and difficult world of the aliens just remember to follow someone's lead who you asked to help you. dont have a "I just wanna do whatever I want when I want" attitude or else your team members may get mad at you. also just remember to use teamwork its the most important thing.

couldn't agree more
The group of ppl with whom you play makes a lot of difference!

I mean when I get in a team of moaning and yelling players, hereafter refered to as "capslockguys" , you try to stay calm, but eventually I can't stand it and start yelling back or just leave

Find a nice little server to play on, and stay there to learn the ropes, get to know some ppl, then they will know your new to the game and help you out and such

Cheers all

And download and print maps of the standard maps. The maps may look complicated, but they're not that difficult once you know them and having a map helps you learn them faster.
For ns_nancy, be sure to get a map that has the vents clearly marked, here are some good ones:

its funny when im playing and it may seem i shout out stuff as i write in caps sometimes but i only do it to draw attention to my text.. ie "2 INC CARGO" etc.

im not actually shouting just trying to get the fact that there is enemies inc noticed

You may want to make sure you change your name to something other than NSPlayer, because no one takes you seriously if you don't.

Acutually, I use the name NSplayer quite often, (maybe cause I reinstall the game too often and get lazy using my normal name); I remember someone said, "OMG, I got n00bed!", after I carefully parked myself in the vent at nancy to stem the initial skulk rush.

I eventually let them know they were dealing with an expert; or not...

Hello all. I've got a question you may think is silly but it's not. wlibaers had a great suggestion except for one thing I don't have a printer. I have downloaded maps to h/d anyway will try to learn them, (groan more reading this is worse than school).
• SanjiyanSanjiyan Join Date: 2003-04-24 Member: 15808Members
actually, i slightly disagree here. i found the aliens far easier to play than the marines, but maybe thats just my playing style (i like to hit em then run away and regen ). as long as you dont immediately go gorge and start slapping down off chambers the second you have enough res, you should find most people willing to teach you the finer points. (def chambers, walls of lame, webs ect..) and as has been said earlier, eventually you'll learn the maps off by heart. they might seem massive, but you'll soon be tearing from place to place like nobody's business

and remember; a Shotgun is for life, not just for Feedwater.

No printer? Perhaps you have a second windows computer next to you? If so then this should prove useful.

There will usually always be one person who is willing to answer questions ingame, and you can usually trust the server ops as well, just be sure not to yell and follow the team, becuase NS=teamwork...

My advice to newbies boils down to this:

1) Stick with your teammates.
2) Don't touch the comm chair.
3) Don't evolve to gorge.

Do these and I promise I will never yell at you.

Newbie who go gorge, do nothing useful, and refuse to degorge because "I like gorge" (Tom from yesterday's miserable ns_tanith game, you know who you are) immediately cross the line that divides "newbie" and "n00b smacktard". On one side of the line, I will patiently explain things to you, follow you around and make sure you don't die, and generally be your guardian angel. On the other side of the line, I will do everything in my power to get you to leave the server, because if you can't listen to your team and try to be helpful, you simply aren't ready to play this game yet.

I can't help but laugh when a newbie jumps in the chair and after a few minutes of people yelling at him a second comm chair finally appears in the marine start

You guys are saying:

- Never enter a Command chair
- Never evolve to a gorge

Tell me now, how will the new players ever learn how to be a good commander or a good gorge? Sure there are some newbie servers out there, but... I don't mind having a newbie as a gorge or a commander... You can see some very interesting things...
• NeoskepticNeoskeptic Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3161Members
Well a newbie gorge or comm is fine... as long as there's a "sergeant" that the comm can turn to.) Remember, you may be the officer, but the sergeant is probably the best soldier you have. (Yes, yes, I know the storyline has eliminated any sort of rank within the TSA.)

Another factor that will allow newbie gorge or comm: the game is composed of newbies, mostly. with only a few experienced players.

Last but not least, any player can benefit from the rare gift of common sense. Try to find yours before entering a game of NS.
• RPG_JssmfulhudRPG_Jssmfulhud Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4006Members
Agree on the common sense.

And about advices, all at least decent NS players can give advice (excluding those yelling ones)...

It's rather fun watching a newbie commander and he on the other hand learns...
As for gorging, see the wonders of the world! See a gorge going suicide on the alien base with spits, see offence chambers put on resource nozzles, see defence chambers standing alone between doors... It's fun!

I don"t quite know where to post this , so please don't flame me for trying. All you people keep saying the same things over and over, fair enough but how about flaming your fellow elites/vets, with some good advice.
First- look for newbies pick one team member to help him/her, why? My first game I tried doing everything the comm told me then when it went belly up whose fault was it mine the newbie,( "if newbie had built the ..... we would have won"). Why did they all run around having fun shooting, they ran straight past me no one helped, but did the comm blame them, no. If a structure is that important why send the newbie a long way from base to build it when your other players ran straight past it, O I forgot you can't blame yourselves you have a newbie, he/she can't defend themselves because they are newbies and no self respecting vet player would take the side of a newbie and say in truth we lost because we forgot the newbie is still learning and we left him/her in the lurch, so feel important abuse the newbie.
Second- What happened to the advice (tell the team you're new and it makes it easier). That's the biggest load of b...sh.t I have ever heard. I told the team I was new and what did I get (O NO A NEWBIE WE"RE GUNNA LOSE GO JOIN THE ALIENS) . I left in disgust.
Third-The advice protect your teammates when they build, HAHAHA I was killed three times trying to build while my "teammates" ran past going elsewhere, while listening to comm (where's newbie why isn't he building) DUH if you're getting killed it's hard to build.
Third- Where is the teamwork.
I'm sorry maybe this should be somewhere else. In a new post maybe? I have more like that , I refuse to take the blame for trying to listen learn and do the best I can.
Oh yeah I left and joined another game and bugga me it was a hoot. Had, notice I said Had to go alien it was a blast . Didn't quite know what I was doing but followed peoples advice tried to follow other players, learn map try to sneak around but was killed often by those sneaky marines who were experienced, the difference, no-one shouting the newbie lost it for us the atmosphere was WOW. This time my ISP decided to crash so don't know what happened. I will keep playing if the game is like the second time I joined.
But think on this all you experienced players we get discouraged being abused for wanting to play and trying to learn not all of us go gorge/comm. We can bring new skills etc to the game and help the game grow and prosper but if we get abused too much we will give it a miss and that will be the games loss. Sorry this is long but I could have put more and I thought it was time that someone stood up for the newbies if we don't the vets surely won't. NOW LET THE FLAMING commence.
• NeoskepticNeoskeptic Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3161Members
Hmm... yes. Now the problem may be that since you are the newbie, the comm thinks "he's expendable, let him keep getting killed and have no cover". OR the "experienced" players aren't too keen on listening to the comm anyway.

Oh, and if you keep getting killed while building, don't be afraid to ask for backup to watch your back, or vice versa. Communication is essential here, and feedback, even from a newbie, is important. (just make sure the feedback isn't along the lines of "OMG what's that big black thing that shoots globs of acid?!")

Newbies + NSPlayer:

Although changing your name to something else will make you more "dedicated" (at least you bothered to change your name), but you gotta make sure you tell your team that you're new. Having a normal player who's silent all the time and sucking bad pisses me off (dunno if this pisses other ppl off too)... But if you tell your team that you're new, and you keep communications link with them, we can help you out with whatever you need. Staying silent, and having us assume you're not a noob, is the worst possible thing to do.

Newbies + Comming/Gorging:

Only comm/gorge in 3-4 player games... Where the other player on your team will want you to comm/gorge so he/she can go shoot some aliens/chomp some marines... On larger games, the games tend to be tenser, and will make players really want to win. So if you want comm/gorge experience, do it on small games. You can also just check out the interface of the comm/gorge if you play a LAN game alone (host the game) and then type "sv_cheats 1" in the console. It allows the game to start without an opponent on the other team... However, res towers don't seem to pump more res out...

Azrael 38 I did say I was new, the comm at first even acknowledged me and asked me to build things in base and was at first helpful now I think about it people were jumping in and out of the comm really regular like. I can see Neoskeptic - how using newbie as expendable/cannon fodder may be a good idea but we want to play too, if the vets say to us look we want you to be bait fine I like that because talking is the key to teamwork but talking has to be two way. Speaking of which my mike comes and goes I had to type half of the time, any ideas anyone? PLease!!!!
