Mapping and all other fluffy activity
I don't know about everyone else but this new deadline (less than 2 weeks) has come as a bit of a shock. I know I can probably get my map done in that time but I don't think it would be the best it could be.

What does all the other mappers think of the june 28 deadline... I'm really curious to know how many people think they'll be ready...

the guidelines say that your map doesn't have to be 100% complete, tho the basic structure should be complete, textures + lighting don't have to be a 100% complete (more like 90% i guess d:) )

at the rate i was going before i heard about the deadline, i didn't have a chance at finishing in time. but the deadline has spurred me on, and now i'm almost positive i'll finish in time. so, yeah i think it's a good thing

I don't really like this idea. The mapping elite in these forums have posted the most beautiful screens ever to be seen in the HL engine. These maps should be, not just playable, but allso visually compleated before they're released. I know many of us have teared out most of our hair (and pubic hair) waiting for the big release, so we might aswell wait just a LITTLE bit longer to make it compleately mindblowing.

Still it's up to flay and the team what's it gonna be, i guess.

The June 28th deadline doesn't mean that we're going to get maps cobbled together and partially finished then have NS release on June 29th. There will still be a couple more weeks after that of intense testing, tweaking, and finalizing.

The deadline had to be set sooner or later, and no matter what there'd be people scrambling to meet it. Some will, some won't. Those that meet it with a playable but graphically incomplete map will still have time to finish, but playability is the main issue for the deadline.

(Besides, June 28th is my birthday -- just think of it as giving you map to me as a present! I'm not funny, I know.)

Don't forget, this is only the deadline for the first release! We are going to continue releasing new versions of NS, along with new maps. If your map isn't ready for this deadline, we still want to see it for the next release!

I think its a good idea, because now i have a motivation to work faster.. i mean, im nearly finished (ok, everyone find some things that are bad, but i like my map) and its possible for me to finish it in two weeks... i mean a readyroom and some optimations of my map... everything goes well

YOu gotta have some form of deadline, or else the game would never get released! If I worked day and night for the next 2 weeks, I could get a playable version of my map in, but I have finals. Do I care? NO! I'll work on it, at my pace and hopefully have it playtest ready in a month or so.

I appreciate the deadline. It gives me a landmark to work around. It won't change much on how I work because as I've said before I'm mapping to satisfy only myself. (In case you hadn't noticed from my posts.) What that means is if I don't meet the deadline, that is okay. The end product of my map is more important.

However, I would never look at my map as being singularly more important than the whole of NS, nor would I disregard the diligent effort other mappers have placed to meet the first release. That is why I appreciate the deadline and the real indication that NS is just that one step closer to release.

Now, I'd like to meet the deadline. As Elysium is my first real effort at mapping, I'm not going to make any claims. I can't predict the unknown, so I'll just have to see how things go.

i think mappers take longer to make a NS map than any other for the simple reason that we (the mayority of us) havent played yet the mod and dont really know what makes it better (in gameplay terms). Ive drawn around 10 layouts and started twice, every playtest pic you give us i use it to try and find out why official mappers have done the room this or that way, cause i dont want to get to the point that im nearly finished with my map, but ive missed something so its ####. ALL this is the mapping feeling around NS, cause NS is nothing to do with any other HL mods, its bigger than all that (thats why nearly every good mappers maps for this mod ). Well. I must map to reach the deadline. bye.

    OOh pudgy smiley!

Oh, on to the topic at hand!

I really really appreciate the deadline. Without it I'd be frittering away my days getting very little done. In the two days I've known about it, I've drawn up a layout, tweaked it till it was good, started mapping it out, and gotten nearly 1/10th of it done! Compare that to the months I've spent 'working' on my other map, its extremely productive, and all because of a little post saying that the maps should be playtest-ready by June 28th.

If Flay + Co. had just said "Surprise! NS is being released in a week, all your maps must be done now!" I'd have no chance of getting it done. As it is, I'm confident I'll be able to roll it out in a semi-playtestable form with whole days to spare! And if I don't, *shrug* its not like I'm being paid/forced/pressured to finish my map for the release, I'm doing this mostly for me (and the rest for something for people play on! )

My finals are over and done with, and my days consist of mapping, playing games, or sleeping. But for those of you who have a lot to do between now and the 28th, besides map your heart out, I'd suggest you don't fret it. Yes, having your map in the first ever NS release is a big achievement. But its not worth have a heart-attack over!

    -Jacius
