99 Fps In Ready Room, 4 In Game?

DarkmoineDarkmoine Join Date: 2003-05-06 Member: 16104Members

80 ping in ready room, 500 in game?
Hi, I searched the forum for anyone that seemed to have the same problem as I, but I didn't find any, so I'll explain my problem :

When I enter a server, everything goes fine etc, I log in the ready room, 99 fps, all cool, I enter marines/alien portal, and my fps drops and LOCKS at 4fps plus my ping goes up to 500, with no choke or packetloss, I'm suspecting it might be my computer being too slow, but I've heard from other threads that even a computer as sucky as a Celeron 433 should get like 20 fps.

My specs:

Intel Celeron 433
Win98SE
Voodoo 5 5500 AGP 64mb
128mb SDRAM
30gb unkown brand hard drive
C-Media soundcard

Thanks in advance to everyone who will try to help me out

Your computer is very old... It may be a video card problem: voodo was good but sucks now.
What display mode do you use? If you use OpenGL do you use the 3dfx mini gl driver?

Seems strange, I know the ready room is quite a long way from the main map, probably out of half life's rendering range. What settings are you running in? (I suggest you try 640 * 480 software mode if you havn't already).

One other thing I should mention is that it looks like you have a lot of upgrades on your computer. This can lead to a less stable machine as some hardware components don't always work well together. Might be worth either buying a new computer, if this is too much money, upgrading your motherboard and processor might work.

I really dont think its the video card at all. Have you tried to get updated user made drivers for it? They can be found here, http://www.voodoofiles.com/. The reason I dont think its your card is because last year with MOHAA came out I was running the game just find on a Voodoo 3000 that had 16megs of ram. The game didnt look perfect but was playable. Try updating your drivers and see if you have any change. Half-Life is an old game and should run fine on that card.

I concur, I've run Half-Life/NS on a Voodoo 4500 - 32/64mb RAM and it works beautiful, 75 frames easy which is cool beans. Try the voodoofiles.com link previously mentioned and post back if you STILL cannot figure this out.

I had the same problem on my computer

    900 amd
    360 SDRAM
    20 GB HD
    ATI 128MB
    via on board audio

I could play without any sound and have a 60- 80 ping and 50-60 FPS, but with sound i had 4 FPS and 500 ping like you have experianced.

I bought a soundblaster sound card (Creative SB live series) it only cost about 30 dollars and cleared up my problem.

I don't know if this will help you?

But it sure sounds like the same problem.....a sucky sound card

yeah maybe a sound card is my problem, I'm using the lastest official 3dfx drivers made, and Glide XP mini-fx drivers in OpenGL mode 640 x 800 in natural selection

thing is, on cs, with Glide XP, I get 80 fps, and on NS, I get 99 in ready room, then it drops to 4, that is with 90% of the maps on 90% of the servers I've played on, there was ONE server that did not do that problem, the server was weird but anyways:P

oh and also, some of the time I enter a map, spawn in ready room, good fps, then the SLIGHTEST movement I do drops me to 10-12 fps, and gets my ping damn high, so I go enter a marine/alien portal, boom 4 fps 500 ping

Just tested the game with sound and without sound, great stuff figured out here

    no sound = 30 fps, 100ish ping
    sound = 5 fps, 500ish ping

thanks whoever suggested it might be sound problem, now I'm going to do stuff with dx sound acceleration because I'm not sure its my drivers/soundcard, cs runs really well with sound, its just NS that doesn't like it or something

another way you could test is play ns_nancy

I never had any trouble with this map even with the old sound set up

hey, me neither, but now I reinstalled the official c-media drivers for my card and get 20-30 fps, 10 at marine base but its fine, better than 5

I guess we both had the same problem, I was like WTH why is nancy working well and not the others, I was blaming it on my crappy comp of course, but I guess I was wrong

Thats the greatest thing I've ever heard, hahaha. If you are playing a game in opengl or direct x, IT IS RENDERED! There isn't a rendering "range"

Anyway, creative has been notorious for making the worst sound cards ever, they ALWAYS have conflicts with videos cards all the time, try finding the newest drivers or buy a turtle beach santa cruz sound card cause creative sucks bad.

On the contrary, newer video cards like the radeon and GeForce FX series have a method of checking the z-buffer and choosing not to render stuff that is blocked by other objects in the z-buffer.
