what are the rules for haiku?

i seem to recall something like 'x syllables first line, y syllables second line, z syllables last line, up to 3-5 lines in total' etc, all these really weird rules <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'>
