    Oc3 connection, Linux.  <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

Nah I really don't know, but thats what the 32 player server I play on runs, and it works great. I would suggest 512meg of ram or up though.

The specs may be a little higher than those of CS, but not too much i guess...

a system fast enough is not the problem
the problem is a connection for the server with a cable connection you can serve on average 8 ppl not more

Assuming I had the proper connection to run a server off of, would this machine be able to handle serving large games like that?

    Athlon XP 1.6 ghz
    1024 MB DDR 2100 RAM
100 GB 7200 RPM Maxtor drives
    Win2k Pro

Nice spec! I may not know that much about server hardware specs etc. but your system should be fine running up to 24players, if not 32; as long as you have a good connection.

With those specs you should be able to run at least a 22 player game with no real bottlenecks. Adding more would depend a lot on your PC tuning skills as well, such

    <a href="http://www.readyroom.org/perfgde_1.html" target="_blank">as you might find here</a>

For a full 32 player game with no possibility of latency (not net lag - latency), you would want to consider using a dual-processor box, to offload some of the OS internal processing onto the other CPU.

In either case, don't imagine a 32 player game without having the better part of a true dedicated T-1 connection . Just like CS or any other mod.

We would most likely be talking a T3 connection, but it's only a possibility.

Also, I followed pretty much all of those tweaking steps, Win2k Pro is so nice <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

well, i ran a dedicated cs server on a p2 400mhz, 384mb ram, blah blah, pretty slow machine...  i ran it of a 650kb cable connection and was able to support about 10 people before there was much lag.  people were connecting from the coasts while i live in duluth, mn, and they said that it wasnt too bad.

i have upgraded my server computer to a duron 900, 512mb ram, etc.  and will be at college this fall, will a multiple T3 connection, so things should be a lot faster.

my guess is that i could host up to 20 on this new server, but will probably do 16 to keep things running smooth.

a 32-player server takes a ton of power and bandwidth, and i have played on few hl servers that can support over 20 people.

btw, i have run servers off 2k and xp, but plan on installing 2k server on the new server.  i strongly recommend that you do NOT use any win9x.  despite what people may say, XP is very stable and can run a server just fine.  i have been using xp since last august and use it all the time.  i know what i am talking about.  trust me if you want to...  or not...  whatever

XP is very good if u play with the right settings in just the right way. Most of the defaults are very bad gaming wise but if u know what ur doing it can optimize the sys nicly. Knowledge of where to go to know how to do such things can be found in MonsieurEvil's post.
