How Does Res Node Sucking Compare

to normal res flow?
It seems that a few gorges sucking form nodes would produce a ton more res then just capping them

yep, but res towers are very durable, gorges aren't

I assume Gorges sucking through nodes would be ideal in the situation of "OMG ONLY 10 MORE RES TILL HIVE BAAH!!"

The new Gorge res sucking model is a tactical choice. Yes, you get res faster so you can plonk down OCs or some upgrades. Win! Except, while you get res, your team doesn't. This delays their opportunity to evolve to more lethal classes and wreck havoc. Not win.

So it's choice you have to make -- when to suck and when to cap. The team needs res, that's paramount, but there are times when it'll be better for the gorge to suck instead (quick defence with OCs of a new area, toping up to build a hive, fast upgrades at the beginning of the game etc). This is what makes it brilliant . A good gorge will know when to cap nodes for the team and when to suck for his own use.

And keep in mind the more you suck the less you get. This prevents suckage to Onos and also encourages gorges to build more than they suck. It's faster to suck, build, suck, build, than to suck, suck, suck, build.

Well now that res comes in evenly and everyone now starts with 25res, I hope evolving to gorge costs less. Because with this new res model, aliens would have to evolve in and out of gorge in order to build hives and structures as quickly as they did before.

It's a nice addition because the gorges will be able to suck the node until they get enough res to cap it. Mass humping could be funny too:

But wouldnt it be the death of pub gorging? somebody goes gorge and instead of building he just sits there and sucks it up?
I really like the idea as could help set up quick defenses in uncharted area, and in theory everything is LOVELY! But I'm more afraid of the "I'll go gorge!" thing (one needs skulks) and after 10min wonder why we dont have enough res to take an upgrade.
Oh well. We'll see how it turns out, can't change people, only code

idea!

if u knife a gorge that is sucking a res node, he should fly around the room making a raspberry sound until u are left with a deflated little sack of gorgeness. pls 2 add

Addition to my last post:

The sucking rate is fixed per node, so two Gorges sucking on a node get half of that rate each.

Yes you could have a pub nub team having Gorges that suck for themselves and don't help out the team. Welcome to Game Over. People will try it, get sick of losing, and realise a combination (as always) of classes is the best route to success. It's still worth saying 'I'll be gorge!' and have a dedicated Gorge, but the fact that it's easy for any class to go Gorge allows the Kharaa to truly adapt strategies as the need arises.

And as for sneaking up on a Gorge... plonk a sensory nearby, grab the silence upgrade. You can then suckle and build away totally invisible, totally silent. It's a wonder to behold .

To adress an issue implied herein - we encountered what we call 'sucking up to Onos': A single egoistic Gorge getting himself 100 RP and letting his team have nothing.
This is why the decreasing rate has been implemented - big sums of res are easier aquired by towers.

it'll be role reversal, before skulks running into base killing the 3 armoury humpers now marines will be able to kill the node humpers, hehehe i like it alot
• BogglesteinskyBogglesteinsky Join Date: 2002-12-24 Member: 11488Members
does the rate ever reach zero (apart from when you get 100 res) or does it just get very very very slow? (ie can you suck up to 100 res, or once you get to 85 or someting does it come to a standstill?)
• MonKeyTurDMonKeyTurD Join Date: 2003-01-10 Member: 12129Members
i just have a couple of concerns with this new sucking thing
well 1 actually
when you kill a gorge the reward is going to be alot less
i mean in 1.04 if you kill a gorge on 79 res, going for a second hive, he will lose a ton of res and possibly win the game for you, but now that everyone can max out on res, you max you can lose is 13, which makes gorge's alot less worth protecting
• BogglesteinskyBogglesteinsky Join Date: 2002-12-24 Member: 11488Members
the fact is, the other aliens are going to take much longer to get the res needed to get the hive up, while the gorge could (apparently) get all hives up in about 5 min. it not that the reward is less for killing a gorge, its the fact that the blow is smaller for the aliens, because they may have 2 gorges, one getting upgrades and one saving for the hive. hopefully the one saving for the hive has enough sense to be sucking on a res node with a mc by him so he can escape.

Yeah but the marines never had such a big fat "red button" as the alien gorge.

Pretty dumb to hinge the game on the survival of such a weak unit (in terms of combat anyway). Atleast CCs have massive amounts of armour don't need to stray far away from defenses

I think this is the greatest idea in 1.1.

It gives the aliens MUCH more map control, because a gorge with a few skulks guarding it can hole up safely anywhere on the map, unless the marines are aggressive and send scout parties.

On the other hand, the aliens must control MUCH MORE of the map to be successful, i.e. a decent number of res nodes along with the other 2 hives. It switches the focus of the marine attack so that killing RTs is as important as killing hives.

It speeds up the game tremendously, as the marines must actively hunt the aliens before they conquer the whole map. Plus it fits nicely in the whole "alien infestation" theme.

Sure by sucking, a gorge can build a hive in less time, or evolve to an onos. But in that time it can't build any structures or cap res nodes for the team. Its actually taking resources away from the team, since its .4 RP/s bonus is less than the average RP/s the whole team would get if it had build a RT instead. Plus it has to hump the res node for much longer than a marine humps the armory. Such fun.

Remember an onos is 70 res in 1.04. Who cares if they hit 100 or not?

That would be evil, build a base that the marines never know is there until they walk into it, or it blows them away. Evil, pure evil.

I think most team's goal on alien is to just secure 2 open nodes for sucking.. one guy is a dedicated gorge who will build hive/chambers, one guy is just sucking for onos, or maybe even fade. Once you get a 2nd hive going up and all your chambers, you can run around the map, suck a node to 25, and cap it. If you can secure 2 open nodes its worth 10x more then it would be if you could just drop 2 nodes, its a never-ending very fast supply for your team. Towards the end you can maybe even cap one of your open nodes, but as long as you have a well guarded open node its very hard for an alien team to lose =[
• BogglesteinskyBogglesteinsky Join Date: 2002-12-24 Member: 11488Members
it appears that the most effective strategy is to suck on a res node until you can cap it. possibly with a sense or (better) a movment for quick escape

The only thing I don't like about the new system is what about idiots who go gorge just to suck a node and go onos then rush the marine base and get killed without doing any damage. Have you guys looked into this at all?

Edit: I read through and saw a few people mentioning this same topic. Atleast with this new system an idiot gorge is not as damaging to the whole team as with the old 1.0x system.
• BogglesteinskyBogglesteinsky Join Date: 2002-12-24 Member: 11488Members
there is always going to be idiots who do that.

hopefully the real idiots wont realise they can suck on a node, so they build a rt there, helping their team a little bit

Interesting to note, during the first session with 'resource drawing', as it was called back then, our first Gorge was a female PT. It wasn't pretty.
