Looking For Some Computer Help..

Recently my sister got on the computer and downloaded a load of programs that have decided to stay on my computer no matter how much I've attempted to remove them. Blubster, Grogster, and a load of nice lovely lovely ads that boot me out of whatever I'm doing every 30 minutes.

Now I've tried pretty much everything to remove them yet they keep coming back, so I think, hey, I should just do a system restore to a point before it got corrupted. Seemed like one hell of a nice idea.. till now

For some odd reason my memory on the computer has been completely eaten up after the system restore, only on my C drive, it's a 15 gig hard drive, and before the restore it had at least 8 gigs free, I made it a little code of mine to make sure that the primary drive was never more than 50% full. Now I've only got 5.5 gigs free, something is eating up my space and I can't remove it. So I think eh.. maybe I should undo the system restore then? nope, that didn't do it, infact that made it much worse (2.4 gigs free atm). I open the C drive and select everything and then view their properties (to find otu exactly where all this memory went to) and it says that everything selected is only 5 gigs big.....

so me=WTH?

Any one know what I can do to remove this invisable information? Or a nice site I can go to that'll help me? I'm searching on my own but figured some of you smart guys'll know exactly my problem

    Start -> Execute

    Type "msconfig" then click Ok

Go to the startup tab then remove these programs from the startup list.

I'd probably format too, or get ad-aware or something if you haven't already, really good program that removes adwares and such, I think theres like spywarenuker for spywares, and your space problem makes it look like you have some memory eating virus or something like that

Like the last post stated, get Ad-aware. It might stop the booting every 30 minutes.
It removes files in your system that link to other web sites (I think) so there are usually no pop-ups or spam in your mail.

I was actually going to do that.. till I just now realised that I don't have my half-life disk :x

I lost it about a year ago and I've never had to reinstall since...

Oh yea, I've already ran virus detectors, but it wouldn't suprise me if my sister some how got yet another one on here.

Also try out this program Search and Destroy I think its better than adaware. You can also update the program and it will download an update like an antivirus program. Check it out.

You should run msconfig, and just remove some programs that start on windows startup. And get ad-aware also. If your not willing to reformat, thats pretty much all you can do. Goodluck.

    Oh please!

Would you cut your arm if you had a little infection on a finger?
Why format if you can solve this problem in less than 2 minutes with msconfig?

Firestorm makes a good (if rather mean ) point. Using a combination of Adaware 6 and clearing out your registry RUN keys with MSCONFIG or WINMSD is a better starting point than formatting your PC, unless you have all your original media and plenty of good backups. In my opinion, at least.

no no no.. I've gotten rid of the ads.. I know what I'm doing there, just some of them didn't want to go away, even through ad-aware. The pop ups would return sort of, I'd get kicked out of my game as if I ahd a pop up, yet nothing comes up for me to quickly hit the X button on

That is why I just did a system restore, I have no ad problems now guys.. I was just wondering if a system restore had a nasty side effect of eating up a load of memory.

Havn't read all the posts so sorry if this has already been mentioned.

I reckon your space is being taken up by the restore points, They can use a huge amount of hard drive space up. Have you got all your hidden files displayed?

If not go My Computer --> tools --> folder options --> View --> Show Hidden Files and Folders.

There should be a folder called "_Restore" delete this.

(you will lose all your restore points in this)

    If this fails, just reformat.

Follow this advice. In my experience, Spybot does a better job than Ad-Aware...plus it's free.

Yes try that. It has a nice search and remove feature. Found some interesting spyware on my pc.

Also if you are using XP or W2K, change your folder settings to view systems files, and go to C:\ and look for the recycler folder and delete everthing out of there. Its all garbage that is saved by the system in case you really did not want to delete that file.
