I know its old but...
...I just saw it for the first time last morning at 3AM, and if there is a movie that should not be seen at 3AM then this is it. They advertised it as some sort of "l337 boxing club tournament" thing and I avoided it, I really thought it was a tournament movie instead of... What it is... Now I'm really freaked, I'm lucky I saw Matrix Reloaded later yesterday or I would still be wondering if I'm really here and not in a room with padded walls drooling over myself (this wasn't in the movie but it got me thinking about it) instead of wondering if I'm in computer controlled virtual reality world. What did you guys think of it when you saw it back in 1999? You did see it right?
Comments
You really should go straight to your local video store right now and get it.
Ooops did I say that or just think it?
What do you mean by that? So far nobody has said it isn't.
I don't really want to spoil the plot for anyone who hasn't seen it, so I'll just shush..
The first rule of Fight club is: Do not talk about Fight Club.
etc.
None of the adverts said it was a fighting tournament, they were all as cryptic as The Matrix.

well Hive didn't see it, possibly for the misadvertising... but it really is a great movie even if the advertising sucked. Well I'm not sure the adv sucked as I am in France and, well... it's France

Agreed.
imho it is like the matrix in many ways... very surreal.. and also you need to watch it a few times to get it..
and rofl @ the QUEEN!
(( for anyone in the UK ALiens is on TV @ 10 pm Channel4 ))
Am I missing something? To me the movie just seems to be "oh look, i'm screwing a crackwhore" then "oh look, I'll shoot myself in the face weeeeee". The whole thing just seemed insanely stupid, but then later when it was revealed that what's-his-name was only a figment of the other guy's imagination, yet somehow the van in the security camera footage had the doors open by itself as if by magic and all of the other stuff, just seemed pretty friggin stupid. That and the whole "I'm disgruntled! Anarchy, yeah! Lets blow up buildings now to stick it to THEM!" sorta thing...
I mean really, did I just miss something? The whole movie just seemed terrible to me...
I'm used to being lynched for it by now, so whatever. Do your worst. :P
what the hell did i just say?
I enjoyed "Corky Romano", so least to say I'm very, very easily pleased with movies and it takes quite a lot for me to dislike a movie.
I found it good but nothing to rave about
See, that's exactly what I meant. The whole movie relies on one cheesy surprise, and by giving away the punch line you pretty much "ruin" (as you put it) the whole purpose of the movie. That's not our fault, it's the fault of the movie for being one-dimensional.
Compare these one-liner movies with good ones like Star Wars. Vader being Luke's father was a nice and shocking surprise, but the movie has so much to offer, you can watch it again and again even if you know the "spoiler".
That's my whole gripe with all this spoiler nonsense: If one or two sentences I write can spoil a whole movie, the movie couldn't have been very good in the first place.
A movie shouldn't be about its ending. All my favourite movies had pretty foreseeable endings. How you get there is the exciting part. Watching believable characters face and overcome conflict (or fail in the process) is the essence of any good story. If you conclude your telling with "Oh by the way, of the two main characters one didn't exist at all and the other is completely insane", you make your own story meaningless.
